    BNSF added two miles of heavy-duty yard track to our Shelby, MT south yard a few years ago. The entire TLM was pulled by a little CAT D-2. Impressive! There were two guys, "in the hole", placing tie pads, and whatever.

    I was aware of how far they have come when laying rails, but I never knew anything like this existed even. Very interesting indeed. I wonder if the 2 rails were continuous or were the rails in sections?

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 9 лет назад +2

      +100PercentOS2 Usually in quarter-mile lengths and then welded together in track so there are no joints for long distances.

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 8 лет назад

      No gaps. The rails are anchored every other tie at the mean temperature at that location to control expansion and contraction. There has been seventy to eighty miles or more of track without joints. It also means that the track can't be be disturbed outside of the mean temperature with adjusting for temperature difference or there could be pull-aparts or buckling. This works very well when the ballast section is adequate.

    Incredible. Using a tracked front loader to pull the whole shebang. I look at this primitive contraption and wonder how far out of gauge the rails are. The guy "steering" the whole thing uses a remote control X-Box and follows a plum line. How accurate it that?

    • @ethanlamoureux5306
      @ethanlamoureux5306 7 лет назад

      The rails are attached to concrete ties which are manufactured with precisely positioned pockets for the rails to sit in. This means the rails are not out of gauge by any amount. The line is precisely placed before the machine comes along, so the positioning of the rails is as accurate as the positioning of the line. Also, if you think any of this is primitive, you must not know much about it.

    • @ethanlamoureux5306

      Rail switches and diamonds are often prefabricated off-site, carried to the site, dropped in place and manually connected to the rails laid by the machines.

      It all depends on the contractor who took the job. Many different companies world wide us many different techniques, so this is in no way how all of american rail is laid.
      This video is a company advertising its new machine for possible buyers.

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 6 лет назад

      That doesnt make sense, does it?
      The vast majority of train transportation are freight trains. The American economy relies on them because the quantities that are transported by rail can not be transported by truck. Freight trains need - because of the higher weights, the larger locomotive performance and the longer trains - at least the same stable track bed as passenger trains.

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 6 лет назад +1

      @Dwight Stewart
      Correct.
      The principles of track laying via machine has not changed since the Austrian company Plasser & Theurer released their first track layer in the last century - that speaks volumes for the quality of the machine and the builder behind it.
      At that time, this machine was much more sophisticated, more precise, and smoother running than HARSO's New Track Construction Machine (NTC) machine, as it is known...
      .
      How to call this pile of scrap "NEW" remains a miracle of American advertising history ..

    Enormous expenditure of energy before the first energy-efficient train can go anywhere.

    • @riparianlife97701
      @riparianlife97701 8 лет назад

      ***** As with electric cars, we can't just look at the operation of any transportation as the only part where energy is used.

    • @riparianlife97701
      @riparianlife97701 8 лет назад

      ***** Local sourcing and urban living are the best ways to cut transportation effects. Seattle approved the construction of dozens of high rise apartment buildings to take people off the roads. Their residents don't own cars, and they rent out the parking spaces in their garages to suburbanites to help pay the rent.

    • @riparianlife97701
      @riparianlife97701 8 лет назад

      ***** Suburbia was a failed experiment. It literally kills people. Suburbanites think cities are dangerous, because the auto-industry-supported media makes sure every crime in a city is televised.

    • @riparianlife97701
      @riparianlife97701 8 лет назад

      ***** Suburbs are becoming ghost towns in much of America while downtown apartments are being built like crazy. Seattle is very late to the game of light rail, but we have one good line, and voters approved a $56 billion bond measure to put subways pretty much everywhere. There are a lot of good jobs withing walking distance of downtown apartments. Microsoft, Google, Adobe and Amazon provide their own buses for employees complete with charging ports and broadband wifi

    • @riparianlife97701
      @riparianlife97701 8 лет назад

      ***** Pretty much. And each of those companies has many other companies that support them. I picked the shop where I manufacture Aluminum boat docks, bridges and gangways in a place where the cost of living is high, because that's where I found a cheap building to rent. It drives me nuts that my employees have to commute so far.

      +Commissar0617 The problem there is getting the empty cars out to get the new loaded cars in. The operation is shut down in the mean time. This way they can load them on the move since the tracking machine is so slow.

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 6 лет назад

      @Harry W. Hill
      You cant load them on the move.
      The track layer runs with around 100 meter / hour - that translates to 27 cm per second. The frontend loader cant align his load of sleepers and then throw the sleepers quick enough onto the waggon.
      One should also remember that the sleepers must be laid down correctly, because otherwise the gantry crane can not deal with them properly..

    I have a question. How does the seamless rail get to the new right of way, if there isn't a parallel railroad line at the site? You cannot haul rail on a highway truck, unless every joint is welded on site.

    • @mathewgrinnell7392
      @mathewgrinnell7392 8 лет назад

      +epistte its welded with thermite on sight but hauled on trucks at 50' in length then what you just saw is what happens assuming you watched the full video after that is ballast which is just very big pieces of gravel. the process is different if they are replacing existing railroad sections. hope this helps.

      +new and old tech you cant do that anymore. if these trains rode over small gaps all the time, the train would be constantly vibrating which leads to a very unpleasant ride. at bridges there are gaps however, otherwise the bridge cant close anymore. im not sure though

    Ya know its funny how they change every part of the technology of the railroad, except the wheels an the rails they ride on. That hasn't changed at all since trains became a thing. They try an make everything as safe as possible, but they ride on 100 year old wheel designs?

      TheSRBgamer63 Its not perfect. Thousands of trains derail around the world every year, an thats perfect? No. You ever ride a roller coaster? Its got a design that keeps it locked on the track, an they have never tried that with trains. There is plenty of room for change an further perfection.

      +Patrick Ellis Derail not because wheels are bad,but because they drive fast,or someone cut railway,add some rock to derail train,there is many ways to derail it,in my country they steal railway ,iron good for selling :P.What u talkin about is already invented,railway like roller coaster have,but it's very expensive ,1 km of that railway ,i think like 10 km or more of classic ones.

      TheSRBgamer63 Still I am right an make a very valid point. There is plenty of room for improvement in railroads, they are far from perfect. Yes there are many human factors which contribute to derails, but there are also lots of things we can do as humans to fix it.

      TheSRBgamer63 For example, in US the Department of Transportation (DOT) intentionally use outdated an unsafe tankers cars to move oil around US. The DOT 111 train car was deemed unsafe after 10 oil trains derailed though out 2012. All these train used DOT 111 cars, an in every case those cars failed an oil leaked into rivers an other environments.
      These people dont care about safety, its all about the money.
