In this video: Taking the KHS Team out for its first ride! All went well, I didn't crash and we both survived! Развлечения
That’s some great monkey shredding right there!👍
Haha cheers Tony!
well done for getting "back in the saddle"!
I remember racing twice in a day a few times - a TTT and road stage on the first day of a 2-day stage race, and doing a 25 mile TT in the morning and a crit at Hillingdon in the afternoon. Did that twice. Most enjoyable!!
Hopefully I can get back to that fitness level!
Well done!! Love to see how polite everyone was. And those bikes at the start... klein, parpkre, orange... stuff of dreams back in the day!
That looked brutal! Well done 👍🏻
Do you think they should also have a separate category for “retro rigid” next year? Then you can race retro twice!
Thanks Rich! Well not many people enter so they bunch the categories together anyway (for the race at least). Timing could be different though. Ah I'm not bothered though. It was great to see if I could keep pace.
Suspension be damned! We got elbows don't we?
Kidding aside that was badass \m/
Suprisingly my elbows and knees took it well!
Well done, I was out of breath just watching!
Hope your back didn't start hurting too!
I bet that was so much fun even if it was brutal on a fully rigid. The KHS team looked stunning ripping down those trails! Makes me want to enter a retro race in the future as I've never done any kind of cycling race. The other retro bikes at the start looked pretty tricked out love the oldschool racing jerseys. Its really cool to see you gaining back fitness there is something amazing about being in shape and cycling feels great hope you keep it up. Yes please race the S Works!
Bloody awesome mate 👍🚲
It was a fun (tiring) race!
Oh superb effort mate 👍👍👍
The 1 and only race I took part in was around one of the plantations above Beddgelert in 87 on a Dawes Ranger (of all bikes).
I only did it for a laugh which was a good thing, as half of the competitors were cyclo-cross boys including National Champion Barry Davies.
Don't ask me what position I finished, I have no idea, but quite a few finished after me. Then I rode back home via the Snowdon Ranger track and down the Telegraph Road to Pete's Eats in Llanberis for a chip butty and a pint of tea. 😋
By the way, put on a set of bar ends, it will make a huge difference for uphill.
👍
Sounds like quite a day you had with that race and the ride after!
As for bar ends... I do have some blue X-Lite ones that could work...
@@MonkeyShred 👍
Wow🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
6 flames for 6 racers on fire finishing!
Excellent - Watch that tree it might be deaf LOL 😂😂👍well done.
Thanks 👍
Not gonna lie, my fillings almost fell out watching this bumpy ride 🦷
By final lap.... I was hurting!
This was very refreshing, the noise of the bike, the roots, makes so much more sense to me than onboards with modern MTBs. The performance of modern bikes seems unreal to me, I know a lot of it is down to the rider, but they do things that weren't possible BITD. Love this video, surprised the GoPro didn't do a better job of smoothing out the bumps though.
I'll be looking out for the next one of these, I'm not far from Cannock 😄
Next one is in Feb! Well that's when it's expected anyway. With the GoPro... I have the 8 "Black" on a chesty mount. The elastic is...well worn so it doesn't help things. I also don't turn on the super stabilisation because it REALLY crops the image down.
I have some time to train for it then, I'll need to, I got out of breath just watching this 😅
Rah, man! It was just like being there! I'm knackered just watching it. Your arse must have killed for days on that rigid MTB!! Haha. Thanks for showing the Chase. I love it round there.👍🚴
Brilliant video Mark… It brings it all flooding back! It was great to meet you on Saturday and the race was brilliant and the most fun I’ve had at a race this year! I very nearly put rigid forks on mine to save a bit of weight but glad I left the Pace RC35 on… It was still really brutal but took a bit of the sting out of it! Really looking forward to the Winter Classic!
Cheers Gavin! I'll have a Pace RC35 on next time... or maybe I'll try the Proflex out. "Full sus" but not too agile. I'll try and keep up next time ;)
Nice race..
That was a tough looking ad at times, a non flowy course. Good job.
It's all built through the "off piste" so it's pretty "natural" still. There was a bit of flow though... if you forget the roots!
Kinda reminded me of a couple of years back when I bought a new Giant Anthem and visited a trail I hadnt been on in 25 years and at the time was considered sketchy in parts. The Anthem glided over the lot effortlessly at speed.Just shows how even the likes of a modest travel contemporary XC bike with a dropper and discs opened up greater possibilities and trails than the things of old.I love my old retro bikes(to look at) but give me my modern bikes any day. There definitely should be a rigid only class too for retro races, bleedin punishment that was.
Oh yeah my 29er would fly over all that like it was nothing. I was pretty impressed at how well I could keep up with "some" of the modern bikes down the trail though.
Coloured tyres do make you faster...
Clearly!
you guys have a retro class? ...love it ❤️👍
Yup! Currently two races a year but maybe they'll get back to the full 4 races soon!
Were you racing or chatting up the ladies?? Excellent effort my friend. I was right back with you. Living the memories. Full rigid is hardcore but it’s how it all began. All you can do is really dial in the tire pressure to give you the grip and a tiny bit of suspension. Speaking of which you can have a borrow of the Giant 970 for the next one but I think they’re 1996.
Hahaha I was just concentrating on trying to keep moving up the climbs! If anything the tyres and pressures saved me. I have some nice wide Nobby Nics on and I was running them about 28psi so they were a bit squishy to the touch. Definitely added a minute amount of cushioning.
@@MonkeyShred Did every joint in your body pop when you first woke up the next day? That’s when you know you’ve been racing. Good effort. Well done for giving it a go.
@@Cobwobbler my ankles constantly crack from old injuries but nothing else will 😢 I need a good fall on my back to get that to crack
I'll be in a MTB race with my '97 Scott Blackstone this October, rigid fork. Any recommendations?
BTW, congrats for the race!
Your ball must be bruised to fek on that thing. Looked brutal
Haha no, no bruises to report. A few scrapes from the thorns whipping out from the bushes but no bruises
Hi Monkey. I see they have anther of these coming up on the 21st May (Spring Classic). How strict is the retro category? Just says pre 1998.
I have a 91 GT frame that I've built up with parts, mostly 90's. The only more modern parts are tyres, seat post, cable, brake pads etc. Still using rim brakes and all 90's tech in spririt.
Oh is it pre 98 now? I’m sure it was pre 95 before and the winner did it on a 97/98 Klein with I think a few early 2000 upgrades so… they don’t check. I could sneak my Kona Chute in but I have an early bike ready in the wings.
@@MonkeyShred ok perfect. Thought that would be the deal. I’m pretty authentic, still running a 3x8 and 98 Bomber fork. And a fixed post. Might see you there!
Are you booked in for the race then? I’m bringing the Malvern Massive. We got three Konas and a GT coming. Looking forward to it
That was really cool! But did they not close off the track to other riders?
No the track was all closed off but for some reason they put the retro riders out with the elites 😂
ugh!, tree root is the bane of all retro riders. I felt your pain bro LOL, good to see you smashed it anyway
The course looked like there wasn't a lot of flow to it either, a case of turn, point and squirt, repeat?
Also, are there any kiwi's out there that know of or are keen to be part of a retro mtn bike club as I can't find one in NZ
It's a very "natural" route I guess... all through the off piste sections away from the main trails of Cannock. I think there is a bit of flow to it but the full rigid took a lot of that out haha.
As for NZ... try Adam @ToastyRides He's a fellow Kiwi so may be able to point you in the direction.
Would a rigid Ribble R4 count as a retro ride? I think it's around a 1996
This race categorises it as pre 1995, however the chap that won the race was racing on a slightly later Klein with even later parts on it so I don't think it's checked.
Bit of a bone shaker that!
You're telling me!
