"Ground aspen" I knew exactly what you were talking about. I got in a very heated discussion with a vet about this food. He tried to tell me that my boy was going to die early in life because I was feeding cat food instead of a hedgehog food, specifically the one with BEDDING in it! I was so very, very angry! Needless to say, I found a new vet.
I know my vet told me theres no foods suitable for them but cat food is to rich so it shouldnt be a staple i was like what? What do you want me to feed him them
had a lady whos a breeder tell me that i was going to shorten my hogs life by feeding him a quality cat kibble instead of the awful hog specific kibble....i would of figured a breeder would know better but obviously she didn't
After watching you break down the ingredients I've noticed my hedgehog's food isn't good at all 😔 I'm getting ready right now to head to my local pet shop and get some good quality cat food for my dear Poppy 🦔 Thank you for the video! And for the wake up call!
www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/cat-formulas/turkey-formula-cats/ I was thinking about this one but I'm not sure if sunflower oil is ok for a hedgehog.. What do you think?
Okay, so first is Vitakraft (PetSmart food). Second is Mazuri, but it's the "insectivore" one made for everything from gliders to beardies to hedgies, not the one they make for hedgehogs specifically, which is a slightly better ingredient list. Third is Exotic Nutrition. I fell for their marketing for guinea pig food, it looks like they're good stuff, but as you can tell, still junk. The last one is Hedgie Delete or something like that, the premium recipe. It's super tough to even find where to buy it.
My breeder told me when we first started talking "DON'T GET HEDGIE FOOD!" and linked her site for food requirements. So I don't have hedgie food... I have a mix of a few different cat kibbles with lots of meat and a good protein/fat mix. And then a pet store employee recommended a hedgie food (they actually don't carry hedgie food anyway, so not sure why?)
I think it's very important that you did this video. I give my hedgie a mix of high quality, UK African pygmy hedgehog club recommended biscuits. Also have spoken to friends with hedgies who have had a lot more knowledge and experience than myself. I wouldn't feed our European wild hedgehogs the hedgehog specific food. Thankyou again. Love from myself and Winnie my rescue hedgie in Scotland 🏴 xxxx
I found a cat dry food that has 30 percent protein, 10 percent fat so that’s okay but it saids 3 percent fibre ash? Is that okay or should their not be fibre ash I wasn’t sure what it is, glad if you could reply. I get my food from “GoCat”. (Btw I didn’t buy the fibre ash one as I wasn’t sure what it was)
What food would you recommend? The food I'm feeding my hedgehog has a good amount of protein and fat. But I just read the ingredients and it's crap. ( Hedgehog mama freaking out lol)
I'm feeding mine, wellness complete indoor, and nutro essentials, chicken ones, sometimes I put natural balance green pea and duck depending on if I have it or not etc here is a good list www.volcanoviewhedgehogs.com/kibble-list.html
our hegehog lost all it's teeth and now we need to use wet food, can we used a canned version of the high quality Duck and Green Pea cat kibble we have been giving her?
Im a little late on the video (love your vids btw, new hedgie mom) but I have been using the Exotic Nutrition and that stops now lol. What cat food would you recommend I start using? I have been researching a few but one of the ingredients in most is potatoes, I thought that was a no go for hedgehogs?
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS 😍😍 and I'm just next door Canada 🇨🇦 and thanks I got so much info from you ( and a bit from tayler Nicole dean ) my mom said if I get a job I could get one and I'm already saving ... I'll be watching ur vids alot
hey so I'm thinking of getting a hedgehog so what your saying is that u prefer cat food and can some of there meals be crickets and mealworms or does the hedgehog need more food? BTW thanks sooooo much for these vids!
I use the cat kibble every single day, and then just add other things to it in addition, like insects and meats. Sometimes if I am feeding a lot of insects or meat I will give less kibble, but I don’t usually skip it :) You probably could though if you made sure they were getting enough kibble throughout the week, but that’s just what I do!
Do you think Lily’s kitchen adult cat food chicken is okay to feed? I’ve been feeding my hedgehog this food for a while and she seems okay but I want the best food possible for her. Great video! By the way I know a lot of people in England who buy hedgehog food for the hedgehogs in their garden and don’t listen that cat food is better! 🦔
So I've been seeing in the comments to introduce new food slowly. I just got a hedgehog, I work at a pet store and someone literally just dropped it off and left. So idk what it was eating. I want to feed a good quality cat food, I'm just worried if I'll upset his stomach since I cant introduce new food properly because idk what he was eating before 🙃 any tips?
Crafty Panda C&C cage is better because they have better ventilation and they're easier to clean. 4 sq ft absolute minimum, 8 sq feet is a good size to shoot for.
c and c cages work great for me, you want two by three pieces and make sure you put corrugated plastic in the bottom, its good for their feet, holds bedding good, and is easy to clean
Crafty Panda tanks are terrible for hedgies and can cause skin issues because it holds moisture in. You can use bin cages, c&c cages, or just a regular cage for hedgies or guinea pigs
Hi I got a hedgie and I believe you read my hedgies food and I was wondering what cat foods you would recommend buying. We have been looking but after this video I'm questing my self. The pet store staff sayed to feed him that food. So ya thanks!
I feel kind of bad because I've been feeding my hedgehog one of these foods. Will my hedgehog be alright for now (since I only have a 2 pound bag) or should I immediately switch to something different?
Don’t switch immediately, you want to do a slow switch over the course of a couple weeks :) Start by mixing a little of the new food in with the old, then after a little while go up to half new food, half old. Keep upping the amount of new food till you’ve “weaned” them off of the old. :) This keeps them from having stomach issues during the transition. If their poops start to look different or weird, slow down the transition.

Here’s a list of some high and moderate quality hedgehog appropriate cat foods: www.volcanoviewhedgehogs.com/kibble-list.html I personally prefer using foods that start with whole ingredients (not meals, though meat meals aren’t terrible and that’s just a preference of mine). When you start the transition, you want to mix in the new food with the old slowly, so you don’t upset his stomach. I usually slowly switch over the course of about two weeks, depending on how quickly they adjust.

This makes me so mad. A hedgehog belongs in the wild. It is not a domestic pet.
Of course it’s THAT youtuber 🙄
lol yeah I linked this video to hers, she has a nasty personality, she admitted in the comments that she only did it for money and sponsorship she knows hedgehog food is bad, so irresponsible, such a horrible person putting hedgie's lives at risk, she even uses dawn dish soap to bathe her hedgehogs.

Did these companies make you censor this or did you do it to avoid conflict? Sorry I just was curious.
