For anyone who is still looking to mod their arcade stick/1Up, it really is easy. But yes, do pay attention to the spring section of this video. That being said, it is sooooo satisfying once you mod a stick and make it your own. I definitely recommend everyone to give it a shot. I started just doing the buttons and even that was fun and a big improvement.
I modded my original 1up street fighter cabinet and installed a raspberry pi 3. Also i completly swapped out the original sticks and buttons for a chinese brand that lights up. Lastly i had to put an a 6lb spring on the stick because i feel like its more solid. All this and i had no experience. I really isnt that hard to do. After seeing this i want sanwa.

HI, your Sanwa stick has the 5 pin socket on the short side of the plate (upper side)...but usually it is on the longer side...how did you modify ? did you rewires cables ? thank you

Leds are a real pain to set up and I personally don't like the way they feel. You can buy different buttons on the same site below but I suggest getting the full kit then the buttons after. It's a pain but buying all the stuff to connect the LEDs separate and putting it together is a chore. They sp have kits on Amazon but there are basically the same price. I never got around to doing it so I don't really have a solid direction to throw your way. They standard set up is pretty loud and once you have yours setup it on you to swap them out. Just like the LEDs it does require extra setup and there's no real plug and play kits out there. Hope this helps! Lucky you for getting the MVC2 cab I slept on the pre-order. Hopefully more become available later on.
Hello, I am getting the Class of '81 Deluxe cabinet, and I'd like to swap out the joystick during the assembly. Do you know if your instructions will be different for the newer deluxe cabinet? Apparently, the control panel and the monitor are 1 unit, so I'm concerned that the install might be different. Also, do you recommend swapping out the buttons too, or just the joystick? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I’m honestly not sure what the deluxe 81 cabinet is. But I’d say try it out stock and then see if you want to swap parts. If your just a casual gamer it should be fine. Stock parts aren’t super bad but i do prefer the Sanwa buttons and sticks. People still play online but it has died down from when they first released.

Thanks for the video it helped me get the job done. Also if you remove the pcb before you screw it in you are able to get 4 screw on the mounting plate vs the 3 you used in your vid.
That’s really weird, I just used a normal Philips head screw driver. You don’t have to remove the plate but it just makes it easier to line up the stick

It doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve thought about buying an extension for it at first but it really doesn’t need one. It might be personal preference but if you buy a tall one and you don’t like it your stuck with the tall one.
My metal plate does not line up with the old one. Did I buy the wrong joystick? Do I just drill new holes? I don’t want to mess it up if it’s not going to work.
You need to remove the metal plate that comes with the stock stick and replace the one that comes Sanwa. If you don't want to do that you can just drill new holes. Don't sweat it you got this 🤘🏼
I Did the Sanwa stick upgrade for my A1Up Pac Plus cab from diy retro arcade. Did it make me a better player? You better believe it! LOL My score near doubled. So much better to play with. Night and day difference from the stock clone stick. I was getting like a death each game with the stock because it just couldn't handle the quick moves 👎. I combined a dedicated 4way gate and a 4lb spring to the Sanwa. Smooth as butter 👍

The LEDs look cool but they feel cheap compared to the Sanwa. There's also an extra couple steps to light them up and turn them on or off that I personally didn't think are worth it. It's mostly used for fighting games the Stock gate goes 4 ways up, down, left, right.... and 8 way gate also have diagonal inputs added like down left, down right, ect .. it just makes inputs more accurate but it is also just a preference. If your playing pac man its not really needed.
Would you ever consider trading the ability of playing online for an emulator? I'm looking for this exact cabinet, and I'm really thinking of getting the emulator and modding it
No way. The online is what keeps me coming back. Don't get me wrong it would be cool having every game on one cab but playing by yourself gets old Real Quick! Sure the games are limited but playing a person can't be topped by an emulator.
You don't have to swap it out but you will just be making new holes, which isn't a big deal but I just didn't want to that. At the end of the day it's your cab man 🙂
It's makes it easier to do shoruken movements. The stock 4way gate makes it a little harder. It can still be done but I feel like the 8 way is more accurate. There is also a circle gate but I prefer the notches on the 8 way gate.
I switched to a high tension spring and in 5 minute my hand hurt like hell . Had to switch back to low tension . The high tension is only good for pac-man or Frogger

Dam wtf maybe it's glued on there? I have the first gen so it might have changed. Just use the new plate your just gonna make new holes but the screws are so small its not gonna make a huge difference. Don't trip on the small stuff ma man just work with what you got and enjoy the cab!
You didn't replace a 4 way gate with an 8 way gate, you replace a square professional Japanese fighting gate with a octogonal gate used for SHMUPs. The square gate has equal throw on all directions the octogonal gate has uneven throw. The reason you prefer it is because your used to european style sticks used in USA which use an actuator instead of a gate, and your used to riding the groove. But Japanese fighting games in Japan come with a square gate by default and Japan pretty much dominates tournaments. PS i also don't like the feel of the square gate(or rather lack of feel) but my dragon punched etc are easier to do and no random jumping

I would Give it a 10 out of 10. The inputs are smoother and more comfortable, the slight advantage of having the inputs a couple milliseconds faster, and being able to replace the restrictor gate makes its 100% worth the time and effort to upgrade. Also being able to customize it to your liking is also a plus.
They can take a pretty good beating the only thing that really gets messed up is the plastic cover but the graphics on the cab haven't fadded at all. The buttons cab take a beating as well, even if you keep the stock buttons
Yeah they stink. I haven't tried the euros but I'm just so used to Sanwa because of my fightstick. I've been real curious of the Korean setup I hear good things.

I have a sanwa 8way restricter Gate and I thought about drilling holes into it to make it fit into my hori Hayabusa stick
Idk I wouldn’t do it save yourself the trouble and just buy the less than $10 gate for the hori and know it’s not gonna be an issue

PRO TIP: ALL 4 SCREWS CAN GO IN! very simply just remove the gate and the pcb off the Sanwa joystick and the forth hole will reveal itself.

Modified stock stick was pretty shit and alot of extra work. If you gonna mod it go with the sanwa it's easier and better overall.

The inputs are smoother and more comfortable, the slight advantage of having the inputs a couple milliseconds faster, and being able to replace the restrictor gate makes its 100% worth the time and effort to upgrade. Also being able to customize it to your liking is also a plus.

How much punishment can these things take because I am a masher.
They can take a pretty good beating the only thing that really gets messed up is the plastic cover but the graphics on the cab haven't fadded at all. The buttons cab take a beating as well, even if you keep the stock buttons
The sticks they put in the new cabinets are sanwa clones and are still below par. Theres nothing better than IL eurostick and buttons.
Yeah they stink. I haven't tried the euros but I'm just so used to Sanwa because of my fightstick. I've been real curious of the Korean setup I hear good things.
Great video. Just some constructive criticism, you may want to watch all the cussing. I’m not some puritan either. I just think you may have kids watching and I think it’s easier to get subscribers when you’re professional.
