Have a stock SF2 Championship Edition Arcade 1UP cab. My buttons are crapping out on the player 1 side so I ordered a Sanwa stick and Sanwa buttons. Still waiting on the buttons in the mail. But I put in the stick at the time of this comment.
I reused the 1UP faceplate and put it on the Sanwa stick per the video. My stick came with a 5 point connector with open wire ends, but I didn’t need to order the wiring harness separately I was able to re-use the wiring harness on the stock stick. Play tested it and everything seems to be working fine and the Sanwa stick is much more responsive.
Can’t wait to get the buttons.

So I did this upgrade to my A1U Ms Pacman cocktail cabinet and it was very straight forward; took under an hour to replace both joysticks. It's funny to see how much the installed joysticks resembled toys as opposed to the Sanwa's that are built very solid. While it's a subtle difference in gameplay, I am glad to have done it for the longevity of the cabinet.
The hardest part was my needing to also take off the top of the cabinet since I didn't have a screwdriver small enough to remove the control decks without doing so. Getting the plexiglass back on without trapping any dust / pet hair has been challenging. I also noticed (I think like you) that the player 1 side used a ton more glue than player 2, but was able to get the old joysticks off with a little extra force using a tool in my iFixit toolkit.
Thanks for the idea, and detailed instructions on how to get this done.

    Unqualified Critics,
Now I finally get why you choose Sanwa sticks (other than personal preference). They look super easy to install in an Arcade1up cabinet. Me, I'm a HAPP guy as those were the sticks and buttons I grew up with in American arcades. HAPP sticks are larger, so I could see them being a nightmare to install in Arcade1up's current cabinets and would probably need further modification. I do have a cabinet from Rec Room Masters that has HAPP buttons and sticks, so at least I have one cab that feels like that 80s arcade I remember :)
    Great vid as always!

      BigMac Fullerton,
This is absolutely true :) However, there are still distinct differences in the way a HAPP stick feels when it moves vs. a Sanwa stick (buttons too). Though I prefer HAPP for the classic feel I remember in the arcade, I'll still play on Sanwa. They play fine :)
I love how modular these cabinets are. So many possibilities!

ruclips.net/video/znURbTZHFwA/видео.html This is a short video showing how to replace the tension spring on a Sanwa joystick. It's a fairly simple mod to do. I believe a 4lb spring should be sufficient as I've heard those are generally what an actual arcade cabinet would have, but you can use a different one if you prefer. All you're really doing by changing the spring is adjusting how loose, or tight the stick will feel when you move it. Heavier springs will give the joystick a tighter feel, and lighter springs will make it looser.

This is harder for most people as it requires the holes to be drilled and the joystick to be dead-center. Swapping the plate is super easy.

@@robtaylor8816 except when you can’t use the old plate. When I upgraded my Galaga to a 4 way joystick I found that the old plate would not work with it, the hole patterns to connect the plate to the joystick were not the same. So I will need to use the Sanwa plate and drill some holes to attach it to the control panel.
