So I just finished with the controls. Not nearly as easy as you made it look, but I got it done. It's literally a whole new game. Controls are so responsive. I also updated the speakers, and it sounds amazing. Thank you, KAG, for putting out this video. It helped me out tremendously. I love the channel.
I have 3 cabs- 40th Anniversary Namco Pac Man, Class of 1981 Ms. Pac Man/Galaga and Atari Legacy Tempest cab. I installed Terry's joysticks in the 2 Pac cabs and Happ buttons on all of them. Incredible difference! The buttons make firing SO much better! The Happ click feeling makes Galaga, Asteroids and Centipede way better than the crappy stock buttons! I gained the most knowledge from this video and, therefore, had a smooth time installing everything, getting the connectors and button wires you linked, even though I did have to use several of the stock button wires w new connectors because the new ones were too short. Having never done any type of job like this, I was apprehensive, but you made it much easier and gave me the confidence to plow through it and it was fun. Thanks and cheers, man!
Arcade1Up's click-less buttons are extremely unsatisfying haha. I'm glad the video was helpful! I may be doing a similar one to change the MK 30th anniversary controls. I thought I could get by with them but they're just so bad.
Great video. Just finished my upgrades this morning and went smoothly (short of one button being the wrong style so hoping to get that exchanged). Of all the tutorials for Happ installs I've seen, this has been the most descriptive and helpful. Great work Chris!
Nice! Did you get a weird button in your kit from Tornado Terry? Or did you get yours somewhere else? I've ordered 3 KI kits from him now and others. Never had any mistakes yet.
Was doing my MK Deluxe and used this tutorial to sort out all my issues with using the totally wrong tabs on the buttons and joysticks . You’re right they don’t work unless you follow your mod to the T. Thanks Chris for posting this
Happ only makes Long Stem buttons. But if you go to buy in to Industrias Lorenzo they do make Short Stem, and Long Stem Buttons. I Highly! Suggest the Long Stem buttons. In the short stem buttons, they use Long Stem sizes Springs, and that makes the spring sit with tension, so it makes the buttons feel more stiff than a Long Stem button.
Hey dude - I just used your tutorial to mod my own KI Cab! This one you made was absolutely perfect. It really helps to have experience with dremeling, using a power drill for the screws, and stripping/crimping wires, but overall I recommend your video to all my friends. Thanks and see you online, bro~!
I will definitely be doing this upgrade, all the quarter circle and half circle moves are so hard on the standard controls, especially Orchids baton charge and Jago's wing kick! Thank you for this video!
Hello, i got one problem, those connectors from the Interface dont fit on the HAPP microswitches, they are obviously too big, despite they are 4.8mm ones?
Went to Tornado Terrys today because of your videos! He's a cool dude and gave me some good tips to wire up these to my Arcade1up. Thanks for the great suggestion! Glad business like his are close by (I live in be Benbrook)
This was so incredibly clear and easy to understand I wish I had seen your video when I did my Mortal Kombat cab.Getting the sticks perfectly centered like Arcade1up originally did is next to impossible.I wonder if there is a correct way you go about it?
Thanks! I’ve considered some methods to simplify it. I may have been able to make something if I had a 3D printer. It doesn’t have to be 100% perfect but it should be close to make sure you’re not missing inputs or rubbing the sides.
Happ joysticks and buttons have the most nostalgic look and feel since I was going to the arcades in the 80's. My dual arcade stick w/trackball deck uses this style. I have an 8bitdo Bluetooth arcade stick for travel. Has the more modern Sanwa type buttons. They are actually more user friendly and work better. Probably better for fighting games. It doesn't have the 80's feel I am used to but I am very happy with it. It's cool to have both options.
@@KillerArcadeGames I bought some Happs and am gonna put them in an MK 30th anniversary cab. I ended up opting to instead buy these wiring harnesses from Arcade Shock. They hook to the microswitches and all of the wires are connected to a 5 pin male connector. I'll hook that to the female 5 pin connector I have from my Sanwa's...which will go to the board. I hope this works lol. Thanks for the swift reply! Did you have to cut the bases for the Happs on the MK cabs?
Not that I know of. I could have sworn someone told me they removed theirs by soaking it in some chemical. I'd be worried it would make the plexiglass look cloudy.
I love them. I haven't tried IL sticks, at least I haven't know it if I have. As far as I've heard, they're very similar. I've used the Happ sticks from Terry in all my cabinets and always enjoy them. I'm ordering a new set for an MK4 arcade I just bought soon.
What I’ve done on a couple of my cabs is install happ style buttons and an authentic sanwa joystick. I am not keen on hack-sawing the happ sticks, and find that a real sanwa stick with an 8 way gate is still significantly better than the cheap clones that come stock, while still fitting in the original space without modification.
How does it feel the tornado terry suzo happ competition joystick 🕹? Do you think IL joysticks will be better or tornado terry it’s an arcade feeling joysticks? Thank you for the video
As far as I'm concerned they feel nearly the same and perform nearly the same too. Theres very slight differences so I just go with the Terry's Happ kit since its all bundled together.
Have you wired the other directions too? I'd double check that your connectors are tight on the microswitches and plugged into the right place on the PCB.
Hey buddy, how do you make them fit longwise? I know I have to trim the base so it doesn't rub the buttons base but what about the length? I have the NBA Shaq and the control deck won't close because they are too long. I didn't buy HAPP but I believe they have the same specifications. Are HAPP shorter?
Did you have to drill a little hole for the stick bottoms (end of the stick/ E clamp) on the bottom of the dust cover or did you not use the cover again?
Oh sorry should of been more clear. I was referring to the dust cover that covers all the wires and controls. The "factory" black cover under the deck.
Are you sure your link for the wood screws is correct on amazon? It shows #6 1inch screws when you press the link. Just want to be 100% sure. Thank you
I did the dremel work on one. Any special disco you used? I'm using the sand discs and all I'm doing is melting the plastic. I got the job done but what a mess it is now lol.
So I have all the parts but my only question is this. The Happ joystick’s mounting holes don’t come anywhere close to the original holes already in the bottom of the deck (from the stock joystick). Do I need to drill new holes or what? Can I just screw in those suggested screws into the deck and not worry about it splitting the wood and cracking the deck?
Hey Will, the holes won’t line up with the originals. You can drill a small pilot hole. I typically do before putting the screws in. Keep it pretty small though, you want to be sure the screws still have plenty of material to grab onto. The deck probably wouldn’t crack since it’s particle board but pilot holes make it easier to screw them in.
I haven’t had much experience with IL. I probably played on them back when these games were releasing in arcades but I find the Happ sticks to satisfy me. If you gave me a blind test I doubt I’d know the difference. I’m sure they’re both good. I’ve had Happ running in my original KI mod since 2018 and they still work like new. Both of these brands are built for commercial use and will likely not ever fail on you in a home use setting. As far as the spring goes, I just use whatever comes in the Happ sticks. It’s strong and feels good to me. I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone changing the springs outside of Japanese sticks. I honestly don’t know if they sell different springs for Happ or IL.
I only had a few of those from a previous 1Up mod. Not enough to do the whole thing. You could buy extras of those and do most of it with the blue and white but I don't think they'll all reach so you may need to cut and splice the wires together.
@@KillerArcadeGames another quick question. I ordered il euro sticks and buttons. Will the blue/white wire pack plus those red wire tips work for the il set up as well?
@@KillerArcadeGames sorry man one more question. Those blue and white wires are out of stock with no date for a restock, so I ordered the baby blue wires brand name guwarry. Will these do the trick? They are on the same amazon page right above the ones you recommended.
I’m currently thinking about installing IL Joysticks to the MK30th, what will I need for this mod? Will I need to buy new wires to connect them? I hear that for MK cabs the installation isn’t as hard and I won’t require cutting of the joystick baseplate but I am unsure
If you follow the link to the KI button set, the same seller has an MK button set. I believe the mod will be very similar to this KI mod so you will probably need some wires. I've heard you won't need to cut the base, I never upgraded my MK30 cab before selling it.
Hey man. Just wanted to let you know that thanks to this tutorial, I was able to change out my sticks and buttons to Happ comp on my MVC2 cab. Just wanted to thank you. Just so everyone knows, after doing this mod, you will not be able yo put the black plastic cover that goes underneath the control deck. Not a big deal for me. Makes the control deck more essesible for testing and changing switches in the future.
For Ms Pac-Man would the 8 way joystick work pretty well or does it affect the movement much? I was considering just putting in a 4 way joystick just for Ms Pac-Man but an 8 way could come in handy if I mod further.
I use a Happ Perfect 360° joystick 🕹 in my current arcade sticks. Gonna’ be purchasing the MVC2 Arcade 1up cab and this tutorial looks great but curious if you know how to install the 360? Pretty sure the only difference is a tiny power supply maybe? Not entirely sure.
I wasn't even aware of these sticks until I saw this comment. After looking at them, I don't know how you'd install those, not without getting to see one in person.
@@KillerArcadeGames I confused myself. It was for the Sanwas. I recently ordered both and forgot I ordered the adapter for the Sanwas. Sorry about that.
2 years late but you should've went with iL Eurosticks and buttons. The iL Eurostick is the "original" Happ Competition, and they perform a lot better especially with the Cherry microswitches. Current Happ Competitions are Chinese made because Suzo does the parts for Happ now, before 2005 iL supplied the parts for Happ. Happ buttons are still pretty good, but iL's are way better since most come with the Cherry microswitches. Although the color matching dust washer that Eurosticks come with may not be your thing, I personally like it
I’ve always heard that and I just ordered an IL stick to install on my real KI cabinet to compare with Happ. Part of me hopes I won’t find much difference so I don’t have to replace them in 8 cabinets haha.
Well I gotta tell ya... I just completed this. Went fairly well Ran to a hardware store got some .25 terminals they worked fine I had to crimp the connections very slightly to get a tight connection to the sticks. Everything is working great thanks to your video! The centering of the sticks and drilling was an absolute horrible experience and I hope I never have to do that again! Now I just got to find the buttons. Any recommendations on where to buy? I have the MK1 cab. (Side note on the MK1 Cab You do not have to Cut the mounting bracket on the joystick It fits without any modifications, you just have to drill new mounting holes for the screws.)
Hey how you doing? Good I hope. I have an NBA Jam arcade1up cabinet. I just put new Happ buttons on it. I bought Sanwa sticks that I haven't installed yet but I'm really thinking about going the Industrias Lorenzo route. I don't see a video where anyone has done that TO AN NBA JAM CABINET. I've heard different things like drilling underneath the control deck, etc. I'm not asking you to do a video on it because I think on one of your live streams you answered me saying you don't have that cabinet. But if you can help I would appreciate it. Either way thanks :)
If you use about 4-5 washers on each screw under the mounting plate you can put that dust cover underneath and it won’t cover the artwork as much and look more like the original look
Fantastic video Chris. I did the buttons today. Easy as pie. I need the connectors before I can attempt the sticks. I was hoping I could ask you a question about gameplay. I was a big fan of the snes version growing up. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this 1 up. So far I'm loving it but I'm REALLY struggling with pulling off combo breakers. Wondering if you have any tips?
Thanks! The buttons are the easiest part but make a big difference if you ask me. I’ve always hated non-Happ buttons lol. There is a good tip about combo breakers someone left me in a comment. I’ll likely screw it up but, if your opponent is doing a combo using fierce attacks, you do your combo breaker using Medium attacks, if their combo is using medium attacks, you use quick attacks while doing your combo breaker input. If they’re using quick punch, you use fierce punch. (Replace punch or kick depending on the character theyre using)
I really want just my sticks upgraded, but this process looks really tough to do and I'm worried I'll either screw something up or not be able to get the new sticks back in the right way. I can't believe how shit the Arcade 1up controls are for the price they charge for these cabinets.
I always say if I can do it, and figure it all out myself, you can probably do it haha. I'm reasonably handy but I'm not great at executing all of my visions. The first time I did this was when there were no tutorials so I just had to wing it and find a way. I've done it many times since then, it's actually not so bad.
I’m thinking of doing this mod. How do you think these joysticks compare to Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT 5 Pin Joysticks ? Sanwa seem to be the “gold standard “ love the videos too !
I've only used Sanwa a few times so its tough to say. I personally have grown up on the Happ controls and always loved them. Its what came in the original arcade, I just put a new set in my real KI cab and it feels great. Sanwa sticks always felt too short and kind of cheap compared to Happ. I'm not saying they are cheap, that's just my opinion of how they felt.
I don't even have this and I still watched and enjoyed the entire video. Thanks for sharing this. I really want to pull the trigger and purchase this KI arcade machine. Not sure if it's worth waiting for the Pro version or not....if it ever gets released lol. One question I have regarding the cabinet's original buttons and joystick....are quarter circle moves hard to pull off? I'm sure using the happ buttons and stick are better but are the stock ones that much harder? Anyone who knows KI understands how important those quarter circles arw 😂
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's difficult to advise someone on whether they should or shouldn't wait for the Pro model. I'm still impressed by the 1Up KI for what it is. It does have some inconsistencies when compared to the arcade that bother me. Its really only something that annoys me when I do go play my real KI for a while and then come back to the 1Up version. The input lag is the biggest issue for me. That said, the online play is the big draw for me! Its so fun.
@@KillerArcadeGames I used to play KI since it was released (played both 1 and 2 but the original was just perfection). I used to play the Mame version on my computer and it was really amazing stuff. Having the option to play online against real ppl is an amazing selling point. Random question but if I may...how do you like the MK Legacy machine? That's another arcade machine I'm really eager to buy cuz it got my all time favorite MK games. Thx again for all your videos man. You do us much service.
The Suzo Happ buttons are great. However, the E.L. joysticks are better than the the Happ one. I did this mod to an arcade1up, except I added a raspberry as well to not just be stuck with a small amount of game that they come with.
Awesome video and channel! I’ve been trying to post a comment for a few days now, but it always seems to get deleted right away? Is it maybe because I am trying to put a web link in the comment?
Oh boy. Unfortunately. I’m prob going to have to do this (eventually) or wait for a pnp solution. For now I’m still playing with busted sticks, which is why you keep winning btw. (Lol jk) your KI skill is at expert level.
@@KillerArcadeGames dude heck yea It’s fun. There aren’t any arcades within reasonable distance here. The online feature was definitely the selling point for me. Happy to get a few matches in with you.
I just want to mention that unfortunately tornadoterry does not ship to Canada(and perhaps elsewhere). I found what I think are the same buttons and sticks as in the video, sold on ebay by a seller named 4partyfun who will ship international. Hope this helps someone! 👍
I only like Happ controls. I was used to them from being a kid in arcades that had them, I changed all my other cabinets to them and have the real KI cab with them. I guess I’m addicted? Lol
It way easier and better to re solder vs clamping ends on the wires. The gauge of the stock wires is so thin that the crimping is not what you want for long term imo
I've never been a Sanwa fan but to each their own. I preferred Happ since it came in almost every arcade cabinet I ever played as a kid. My real KI cabinet has Happ/IL controls and I stuck with it.
Just finally bought this ki for 399$ so i dont need the crimp tool and the heads i can use the enoder cords from the encoders i have lol to put the happ buttons on.
I’ve never changed a stock 1Up cabs controls so I can’t compare it. The deck isn’t as wide as the old one since it’s sits in between the sides instead of on top of them. It sure makes fitting the sticks in there even harder.
I've heard that and I think the sticks that were on the real KI cab I bought were IL. I've never had any issues with the Happ sticks and they come bundled in that kit from Tornado Terry so I just buy that for the ease of ordering.
@@KillerArcadeGames yeah he sells SuzoHapp despite just labeling it as Happ on eBay. They aren't the same quality they used to be. But if you like them then it's all good. 👍

I only had a few of those from a previous 1Up mod. Not enough to do the whole thing. You could buy extras of those and do most of it with the blue and white but I don't think they'll all reach so you may need to cut and splice the wires together.
@@KillerArcadeGames oh I see I got to the part where you do the sticks and the red clips come into play
@@KillerArcadeGames another quick question. I ordered il euro sticks and buttons. Will the blue/white wire pack plus those red wire tips work for the il set up as well?
@@rayplaysgames_RPG they should work. All of that stuff is pretty universal.
Where'd you get the awesome KI bezel?
That one is from here: www.escapepodonline.com/products/arcade1up-killer-instinct-complete-art-kit-v2
You can order just the bezel from the menu.
I’m glad to hear it!
Just finished tonight. Sure do love the feeling of there joysticks. Still tbd if I can pull off moves any easier
I think they improved my ability to accurately pull off moves. I'm used to the Happ controls so it wasn't a big change for me.
For Ms Pac-Man would the 8 way joystick work pretty well or does it affect the movement much? I was considering just putting in a 4 way joystick just for Ms Pac-Man but an 8 way could come in handy if I mod further.
I've played Pacman on an 8 way and it seemed fine to me so I'd go that route. I don't know if a 4 way would work well for other games though.
DIY Retro Arcade has a wiring adapter for the Happ to A1Up so you don’t have to reuse the stock wires if you don’t want to.
Do you have a link for that? I looked but couldn’t find one.
@@KillerArcadeGames I confused myself. It was for the Sanwas. I recently ordered both and forgot I ordered the adapter for the Sanwas. Sorry about that.
I really need to do this i struggle with half circles. Im still learning the game but I love it
It helps!
Great Tutorial! When I eventually get a KI cab I will be using this
Thanks, I hope it helps people.
Just a heads up you don’t use the end of the crimpers for crimping lol
🤷🏻♂️😂
Awesome tutorial thanks a lot mate!
Took the joystick base off and cut it with handsaw. Probably the easiest part of the whole process
Just seeing this, I replied on the other video you commented on. Hopefully it helps.
If you use about 4-5 washers on each screw under the mounting plate you can put that dust cover underneath and it won’t cover the artwork as much and look more like the original look
That’s a great idea! I just don’t want to remove them again to do it haha. Especially not on all of my cabs.
@@KillerArcadeGames next time
Thank you for this , my sticks broke last week
No problem, my left side was going out too.
(Replace punch or kick depending on the character theyre using)
@@KillerArcadeGames THANKS
And keep up the good work.
@@KillerArcadeGames thank you for the info. I’m all about keeping things original so I’m going to hop on this set. Thanks again and love the videos.
Why not IL? The pricing is not that much different and their quality is higher! But good tutorial!
I’ve never had an issue with Happ, the kit is also easily obtained. I’m sure the IL sticks are good though. If Happ ever fails me I’ll try them.
Got the same setup. I see you on the Leaderboards ...
Nice. I saw you too, I’m sure we will run into each other eventually.
Cool Tutorial!👍
Thanks Monke Man
I don't even have this and I still watched and enjoyed the entire video.
Thanks! Yeah, links get automatically caught up in the "held for review" section and I rarely check it. I'll go look.
Ohh! You might find a couple in there from me! 🤣
Wow! Great video!
Thanks!
@@KillerArcadeGames yeah, really detailed
Oh boy. Unfortunately. I’m prob going to have to do this (eventually) or wait for a pnp solution.
For now I’m still playing with busted sticks, which is why you keep winning btw. (Lol jk) your KI skill is at expert level.
Hahah the sticks are helping a bit for sure. I feel like I’ve had a big leap in skill from getting to play real people instead of AI. It’s been fun!
@@KillerArcadeGames dude heck yea
It’s fun.
There aren’t any arcades within reasonable distance here.
The online feature was definitely the selling point for me.
Happy to get a few matches in with you.
Awesome video
Thanks!
I just want to mention that unfortunately tornadoterry does not ship to Canada(and perhaps elsewhere). I found what I think are the same buttons and sticks as in the video, sold on ebay by a seller named 4partyfun who will ship international. Hope this helps someone! 👍
Ah, good to know!
why not just a sanwa with 3 or 4 pound spring 🤔 lol and happ buttons
I only like Happ controls. I was used to them from being a kid in arcades that had them, I changed all my other cabinets to them and have the real KI cab with them. I guess I’m addicted? Lol
@Killer Arcade Games yeah i grew up with them I'm 48 but sanwa and simitsu are fantastic especially changing spring and adding octagonal Restrictor
It way easier and better to re solder vs clamping ends on the wires. The gauge of the stock wires is so thin that the crimping is not what you want for long term imo
I don't have a soldering iron yet. I do need to get one to work on my real cabinets. It seems something is always needing a soldering/desoldering lol.
@@KillerArcadeGames oh defiantly. It may take some practice but in the end it’s the better direction.
U da damn mann! 👍🏾💯
Thanks John!
I wish I have one of them
Look around on Facebook marketplace you might find a deal!
Ok
super nice!
Thanks Peketo they feel much better
Those buttons need to be replaced with either Sanwa buttons or the PowerA Fusion arcade stick controller domed buttons.
I've never been a Sanwa fan but to each their own. I preferred Happ since it came in almost every arcade cabinet I ever played as a kid. My real KI cabinet has Happ/IL controls and I stuck with it.
@@KillerArcadeGames Are the Sanwa buttons oversensitive?
Just finally bought this ki for 399$ so i dont need the crimp tool and the heads i can use the enoder cords from the encoders i have lol to put the happ buttons on.
I installed Sanwa sticks because I didn't know how to install Happ sticks. The Sanwa is nice but I might change them. Let me keep watching
I wasn’t exactly sure how to do it myself but I worked my way through it thankfully 😅
The killer instinct came with significantly upgraded joysticks over typical a1u cabs.
Interesting arcade 1up changed the construction of how the original controls are assembled. Marvel vs Capcom were easy to swap out
I’ve never changed a stock 1Up cabs controls so I can’t compare it. The deck isn’t as wide as the old one since it’s sits in between the sides instead of on top of them. It sure makes fitting the sticks in there even harder.
02:41 that's what she said! 😉
Hahaha
iL Eurostick more true match to original Happ sticks from the 90s.
Could removed the gate off first. But great video!👍
Eh, nothing would have saved the stock sticks in my opinion lol
What i hate about these 1ups is the quality of the cab and the fact they could have made them Wider - Caberet
does anyone want to do this for me i dont have time to do all of this lmaoo
Did you ever get your Buttons & Stick Replaced yet?
$700 cabinet n have to upgrade these crap 💩
I wasn’t too excited about it needing the upgrade. I still think $700 was just too much. My curiosity and online play made me want it.
🤣🤣🤣 How to install lol 😂 YoU Don’t! YoU just buy the Arcade1up Pro! 🤣🤣🤪🤪
If the Pro ends up costing the same I'll be a little annoyed lol.
