Wow!! I have owned a JLF for 7 years now and only now i found out how to set it to 4 way!!!! Thanks!
Thanks Shane, Love DYIretro, been my goto since I started with the cabinets
Great vid and info! I recently purchased a used Pac-Man cabinet at a flea market. The cabinet looks great, but the guy told me the joystick just doesn't work right. He wanted $100 but took $75. I get it home and take it apart and instantly saw something was up. All the joystick wires were spliced and bare with no electrical tape covering them Then i look closer, it had Sanwa stamped on the bottom of the gate. And sure enough the gate was set for 8 way instead of 4. So i straightened it all out and it now works great! Apparently someone had attempted to change the joystick and had no clue what they were doing, then gave up and decided to sell it.
SCORE!
Man, if you went through life and this was one of the only gifts you stumbled into I'd say you were a winner. Awesome dealio dude.
Thank you! So well explained and demonstrated! Perfect!
Thank you Sir! Just the answer I was looking for, easily explained!
Perfect! This is exactly what I was looking for man thanks!
thank you, sir. I'm glad I bought parts from you.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain this. I had no idea you could flip these to 4 way!
happy to help :)
Good info on how to transfer to a 4 way gate! Awesome
Thank you! Exactly what I needed...
Omg thank you i had no idea these rotated and ordered a bunch and keep switching them out for diff games.
I was wondering why i couldnt play pacman and hit any turns
excellent tutorial video. thumbs up
Lol I didn't know those square can be rotated after watching a bunch of videos. This one surprised me.
while it can be rotated but its still 4way, just in diagonal or straight.
Thank you!
What's the difference between the various Sanwa JLF skus? I'm about to replace my stick but no idea which stick I have as I doing it's stock
never had an issue removing the gates from clone stick... did have some difficulty fliping to 4 way tho
Pro tip, just cut off only one end of the gate as the other 3 would lift of easily and you can still re-use the gate, you do not need to cut off all 4 corners and destroy the gate.
Thats what I was thinking.
Are your joysticks on your site plug and play for the non tech save ppl lol? I’m looking to upgrade my wave one Pac-Man stick. Thanks.
Useful video and subbed! Are Sanwa mounting plates interchangeable with JLF and JLW sticks? The reason is because I have an older JLW stick and I would like to upgrade to the JLF v2 silent but the mounting plate holes differ which may mean that I may not be able to upgrade without replacing the control panel assembly.
I just got an F300 Elite with the Sanwa parts. I notice the ball kinda spins around instead of being stuck on. Is this normal or is mine broken?
@@zZiL341yRj736 im 2 years late but ball always spins on japanese sticks
What About AtGames Joy Stick Controllers? Do they have Gates and if so where do you buy Gates for them?
I'm guessing E-Bay has Sanwa brand Gates or clone gates.
Thanks - great video. I am just wondering when would you not really need a gate? I'll be using pacman so that would be 4-way.
4 way for pacman, you always have to have a gate, it holds in the PCB :)
How can you play a 4-way diagonal game like Q-Bert. Do you leave it in the square setting or is there another gate?
you got to choose, if playing mainly 4 way set to 4 way. Its the downfall of multiboards
I got an F300 Elite with the Sanwa stick, is the ball suppose to spin around on top of the stick or is it supposed to be stuck in place?
they are removable. its its loose simply tighten it. If keeps coming loose apply locktite on the threads then re tighten
DIY Retro Arcade It’s not loose but I found out the ball and the shaft is supposed to spin, if it was stuck solidly I think doing quarter circle would be a bit tough.
@@zZiL341yRj736 yes the shaft it self will spin freely, it has too or it would break the base.
Regarding the square vs diamond, square has been working good for most games, except fighting games like SFII seem impossible. Is octagon good both for fighting games and for all the other games that work good with square?
octagon is the "happy medium" between 4 and 8 way games. It works best with both style games.
Some of the directions not working.....should I replace the whole joystick?
I am trying to install a 5 pin to 2 4pin Sanwa into a Pac-Man machine, how can I tell which direction I should install the stick?
if you are using our pnp cables then the cable points up towards the lcd
DIY Retro Arcade thanks, that worked. I didn’t even have to drill new holes, and now it plays like it’s supposed to. You guys rock, you’ll get more business from me.
what about a galaga/galaxian machine that is two way?
you can usually set it to 4 way and be fine. The CPO is typically cut to only allow 2 way as well.
Which is best for playing Tekken-7,Please tell!!!
must use a octagon
@@diyretroarcade ,tell me about square one,Is octagon seriously better🤔🤔🤔
@@TkHaroonGaming learn to play within the gate. It’s better.
Is octagon best for playing tekken???
generally better for most fighting games
Play within the gate. It’s better.
oh man, mine should be the fakest one ever, it was the most difficult thing to remove. Funny enough, I have other 2 sticks that are sanwa clones, but they stated it clearly and those were easy to remove.
Why didn't you just take it off instead of ripping it all apart
Even in 4 way it still hits the diagonals. Don’t they make a true 4 way
Gate won’t come off of a Sanwa recently purchased from you..
hadouken thanks, the 8 way was purchased for another arcade so it’s gonna get wasted since it was installed on my new joystick bought for Pac-Man
@@mattpotts3413 the non factory gates are a epic pain to get off. Use a pair of cutters to just cut it loose. You can also pop off 3 of the legs like i say not to do in the video and simply cut the 4th. Make sure you set the factory gate to 4 way for pacman
while it can be rotated but its still 4way, just in diagonal or straight.
No - When the gate is lined up as a square with the joystick, all 8 positions can be activated (up, up/right, right, down/right, down, down/left, left, up/left). When it's rotated 45 degrees (diamond) the stick can't move far enough in the diagonal directions to activate the switches. It will only register up, right, down, left in that configuration.
@@Retro6502 no, just check out the real Octagonal gate. You have here only 4 indentations. So rotating it just give you better diagonal or straight control but not both.
@@retromister81 An octagonal gate has nothing to do with it. This is a square gate. Turning it 45 degrees relative to the switches locks out the diagonals.
@@Retro6502 but that is what i am trying to say. You can lock the diagonals or straights but you still only lock 4 way.
@@Retro6502 After rotation I think that my joystick still allows the diagonals to be hit. I bought mine on Amazon a people suggest it is a possible fake and they also say that the diagonals can be hit! Installing tonight! Looking at it I would say the square cutout needs to be a bit smaller to really lock out diagonals.
In other words... Leave the controller the way it is.
Does using Octagonal Gats consider as cheating?
No. As a matter of fact, using an octagonal gage is a disadvantage.
lol no.. a lot of people don't even consider it good
