It always seems that people are either a great programmer or a great player but you are both. Incredible sound set and so so excited to get these sounds on my dx!
Man you sold me on the Reface DX, make it sound like a dream machine, analogue and digital and electric! So thanks man! I’m waiting for mine to arrive in January :)
Looks like J3PO has some competition finally😬 Tom's playing is magnifique!!! Not to mention his programming!! I'm looking over at my full-size, six operator DX7 like: "Are you hearing this $%^&!!?? 😂. I know I have at least some of Tom's patches--particularly the "5th. FM" one, and I have the big collection RefaceDX compilation, but I'm headed to Soundmondo right away just to be sure! Thanks Tom!
Man. I know theres the Soundmondo app for storing patches on your phone through their cloud. But you making me wish this Reface DX had twice the storage!! Keep em coming! I'm half Spanish descent born in the U.S. btw. So far you're my go-to for DX patches my friend!
Its the combo of all the effects and the 'user interface'. All the effects are usable and each have a wide range creating seemingly endless sounds in combonation. I only have tried the Cp but I'm considering buying a second b4 I get the Dx.
Hi Tom, I take it all of these sounds could be made on a DX7, right? Is there any tutorial you know of that could teach me some techniques you used in making these very natural sounds with FM? Thanks
Thanks a lot for the video, your sounds are amazing. Quick question, do you think that having just 8 note polyphony in Dx as compared to the 128 in CP could be a problem (for practising jazz, classical exercises...)? It doesn't seem so, but if like to double check...
Hi Javi, I wouldn´t recommend any of the refaces for training jazz/classical. Get full size keys at least 5 octaves or better a weighted keybed (piano). This would be like learning to drive a bicycle on a 1 wheel mini circus bike..
@@TomAnsinkVideos thanks, it's just for practising while I'm travelling, playing around with sounds, etc..for playing I have a piano and some keyboards with more octaves. Do you think the DX could be used for that? I'm doubting between the Cp that has 128 polyphony and the Dx, that only has 8..i really like the Dx, it's just the only negative thing I see on that..
@@javikero Why do you need 128 voices? You should ask yourself first if you looking for a piano or a synth. These are 2 different things. The CP is a "digital piano" in a box with only 37 small keys. The 128 voices would be only relevant if you connect it to a bigger midi keyboard. Do you use a sustainpedal? Why do you need 128 voices?
@@TomAnsinkVideos thanks so much for your comments! You're right, I think want both a piano and a synth and they are different things..I just ordered the DX (after watching your sounds), as I think is more versatile and I already have piano (yes, I normally use pedal) and I'll buy the CP in the future if I like the DX 🙂
@@TomAnsinkVideos Because I do have this in a setup where I connected it to a 61-key MIDI controller. Though I’m not sure why I’d need 128-voice polyphony if I only have 10 fingers.
I didn´t try the opsix, its a more complex engine and another price category. More specs however doesnt mean necesarilly better. From what i see most people get confused enough with the reface. It just depends what you are looking for.
@@TomAnsinkVideos Exactly. The OPSIX is good my friend has one. But you can get lost in it. The DX is more instant. And you've shown it can sound amazing and very expressive.
Dank je Jan, ik gebruik geen editor, direct van het keyboard zelf als je dat bedoeld. Gewoon knopjes blijven drukken dan veranderd geluid het vanzelf.😆
Alas, no. DX7 has 6 operators and uses a different file "format" (to be more precise, different sound engine) which is not compatible with 4 operators of Reface DX. Technically, you can try to edit them for 6 ops but i'm not sure if it's worth it. Edit: 6 operators of course, not 7.
@@spaceman-pe5je From what I searched, there's no such option. The operators are logical commands built into one chip. It would require serious reverse engineering to rewrite the firmware of DX7, and I'm not sure if it can physically support using 4 ops in this way.

after hearing so many complaints about slim keys it always feels good seeing someone play a reface well
That Jarre sound is really on point. Awesome!

Yes this guys playing is so funky and soulful. It reminds me of early 70s Stevie Wonder. And it works so well with the DX sounds.

Get a Korg Volca FM - you can download and install DX7 patches onto that using a programme called Dexed
