I'm trying to get into FM synthesis, and I'm taking piano lessons. This is a good example of the potential that comes with knowledge of sound design and piano proficiency coming together.
I wanted a small keyboard to do Rhodes and organ sounds, and I was having a hard time deciding between the reface CP and YC, but after finding your video and the fact that you offer these patches I can get all the sounds I want out of the DX. Thank you. Your synth programming skills are amazing.
It's completely insane how you've managed to get such accurate sounds out of FM synthesis. You've turned the Reface DX into an absolute funk machine. A tutorial, or even just any tiny insight into how you even begin to create sounds like this would be amazing if you feel like doing one. Thanks so much for making these available, and for making my CP redundant.
Thanks for your message, I am thinking how to make a video like this since all the time more people ask for that. The problem is that most people don´t even know how any synth work. So I am still not sure how to do that..
@@TomAnsinkVideos Awesome, anything would be cool, even just an over-the-shoulder view while you program and maybe describe what you're doing would be super helpful. There are quite a few good primers/tutorials already on synthesis in general and FM synthesis you could direct people to if you wanted to just do an intermediate/advanced tutorial that doesn't cover the basics. Red Means Recording has a video on sound design that covers the basics of synthesis, and Ben Jordan has one on FM synth that's pretty in depth. Floyd Steinberg has one that explains FM synthesis with a Reface DX. You could link them in description or mention them in the video for people to check out first, then just focus on the advanced aspects of FM that you use. Thanks again!
@@boswell255 yeah I did think about that , linking other videos that explain it better than i will. I will check those videos you mentioned. Still not sure about it how to do it but thanks anyway!
@@TomAnsinkVideos Dude please, I’m dying over here. You made me comment on RUclips with this. I never comment on RUclips. I don’t have a DX I have a volca fm and I want to learn from you. I already know how to do FM. Just this level of sound design is something I’d like to understand.
I've been eyeing the reface CP and YC for a while now and didn't pay much mind to the DX...I think I was expecting like 10 different patches to play the Doogie houser MD theme song....I had no idea how versatile this synth was, may have to check it out...especially because its 100 bucks less than the CP and YC. Awesome playing too BTW. thanks!
I found your patches on Soundmondo before finding this. I have you to thank for the DX100 Monobass patch I been trying to get my hands on in DEXED for years 😭 THANK YOU SO MUCCCCHHH!!!
The only two people that thumbs this down were the only people salty enough to realize they didn't have a Reface DX - because the patches were TOO DAMN GOOD!!
Was on the fence about which Reface to get, if any. Your videos singlehandedly tipped the scales. Great work, thank you!! Will definitely by downloading your patches -- love every single one. Yamaha should hire you... best demo I've seen.
Beautiful sounds! Out of all the demoes I've heard, your EP patches sound the most-fleshed out, especially given the range of diff EP sounds you make. I have a feeling some of these will make permanent homes on mine. Also, your playing is amazing. That separated bass lines under/over the chords drew some intense emotions. How do you practice? Do you have any resources for somebody who's played instruments, but are just getting into keys?
Man those sounds are crafted perfectly, well done some of the best ive heard, didnt realise FM was that flexible, and here am i making searing Hoodesque bleepcore 😔
Wow, you and I seem to have almost identical tastes. These are very similar to the patches I made for mine. I even made one that is a combo of an electric piano + organ like your 2020p ad. I think my patch I was most pleased with was my Yamaha CP70 baby grand sound.
These are gorgeous thank you very much. I'm waiting for my dx in the mail and this is helping ease my worry that I would miss the electric sounds and should have spent another $100 on the cp first. The first two alone are more than enough to quench my thirst for those keys.
All these sounds are so much grander than what you'd expect from a small FM synth like it. Gosh I need to see if I can do this stuff on my Electone HS-6...
All epic.Rock Box blew me away. This guy is funky. And he has mastered the programming on the DX. I've just ordered one. Gonna see what I can pull out of it in 2023.
Thx for your sounds, especially the Rhodes / Wurlitzer sounds are excellent! Finally managed to load your presets from soundmondo onto my reface dx, so happy! Thx a lot ❤
I don't have a reface DX, but I think it would be fun to try to reproduce the Wurlitzer sound on the DX7 or Dexed with some effects. The effects on here sound like the same effects that I have on my Reface CP.
Can you compare your CP sounds with this patched NeoRhodes? Is it still worth to get CP? There are some good offers on DX and a far far less offers on CP... So for budget it's better to go for DX but CP sounds..... BTW I have Delay (Grand Canyon) and Reverb (BlueSky) pedals so not really bond to CP's built in effects
@@vladimirvoevodich623 The CP is probably better for a genuine Rhodes sound. However, there is something about the touch sensitivity of CP that I don't like. If I play normally, the sound is much too soft. It tends to either mumble or shout.
That is good idea, some people asked me how to program sounds. Its a bit hard to explain specially not knowing if someone already understand a bit how a synth works or not.
absolutely amazing, i've watched this video just for the playing over 15 times... And i've also got a bunch of your patches on my dx. Thank you SO MUCH Does anyone know what song he's playing while using the DX EPiano patch?
I see this and I'm like, can I just download your skill and knowledge, cuz honestly, no patch in the world is gonna make my music decent unless i..how you say?..learn??...how to?...PLAY??????!?!?!??!?
How do you learn to play like this? Whenever I look up soul and funk songs there's barely any midi for this stuff and your playing is great. Are there any youtube tutorials you would recommend? I literally don't know anyone who plays soul and funk around me.
This shows right here…. Yeah, the presets on a synth are fine in a lot of cases but, if you know what you’re doing or at least noodle around…. You could make a great sound a $1000 synth would have for a preset with a synth at a fraction of the cost. It also helps that he can play his ass off on the keys. 👍
Quality sounds here mate. Quite like the look of these, do you reckons it's more of a 'keys' synth? I'm after something for lush pads but wasn't sure if this fits the bill.
Incredible, much appreciated. I would love to know how you learned to freestyle like that. Did you learn a bunch of music theory or how do yoou know what is what.
wow excellent!! I just bought a DX7iiid for a very reasonable price but I´m beginning to wonder whether I need it AS well as my reface... The DXii sounds huge, but also IS huge, heavy and requires plug-in power, fiddling with sysex... honest question: is the DX7iiD rendered almost obsolete by this little beastie?
On paper, the DX7II is better because it has more operators and some additional features, but in reality, it's a matter of preference, this keyboard is also much smaller, more portable and is easier to use/program, so personally, I'd prefer the reface DX. Also, if you want more keys you can simply plug in a MIDI keyboard through the provided MIDI cable.
Maybe use this little guy when gigging or transporting...larger analog / digital vintage synths shouldn’t be banged around etc bcuz they’re a huge bill to fix
Beautiful sounds, I don't have a Reface FM, I have its older brother the 4 OP TX81Z, Korg Volca FM and of course, Dexed. The Reface sounds a bit different to the TX, and I don't think its just the patch differences, I'm not sure what the architecture of the Reface is (all I know is its 4 OP), but it sounds like it has more waveforms than the TX, either that or its programmed much better!
Can you change the basic operators to different wave forms on the TX or is it like a DX7 sine wave only until stapling? That is more important than the total amount of operators. That makes it way more versatile and easier to program.
