    It should be fairly easy to make a box that sends the patch MIDI data to the DX using an Arduino, so you can have a standalone device to store all the patches.

    Thanks for showing the controler, it makes the DX so much more worthy but no other reviewer talk about this in their DX reviews.

    The DX is the best of the range BY FAR .
    32 memories
    2 effects per patch
    Feedback on all 4 ops
    Onboard looper with quantisize. Wonderful touch sensitive keyboard. And it sounds as good as a DX7. And brings FM into the 21st century. With a more user friendly interface. And a 4 op architecture. That is easier to master than its 6 op predecessor.
    32 memories doesn't sound like alot. But in my 40 years of experience with synths. I've never hear any synth with 32 absolutely stellar sounds. And that includes the likes of the JUPITER 8 and DX7. If you have a synth with even 20 truly AMAZING sounds. You have something. It's quality not quantity.

      I am a FM fanatic. And it took me a while to warm to the REFACE DX. Being so used to the original DX7. But I love it now. And it's got so much potential with a much friendlier user interface. It's a powerful little synth. And some of the patches I've heard people make on it are outstanding.

    Nearly bought one, but for these very reasons and the fact it only has 3 octaves, no input for a breath controller, only 1 din midi port and no strap buttons, I decided to buy a secondhand Dx100. The Dx100 has 4 octaves, strap buttons for use as a keytar, midi in, out and thru, an input for a bc1 breath controller, will export patches as sysex to any librarian/sequencer that has sysex support, and has proper pitch end and modulation wheels. Add to this the fact there are a plethora of editors available even for iPad it makes far better sense. By the way I owned a dx100 back in the late 1980s and early 1990s and foolishly sold it. Oh and programming FM synths is not nearly as hard as most people think.

  • @MrVinylistic

    Have one in my studio. I use it often for synth basses and for layering with other synths with its nice chords and brass sounds. Also great for many 80s sounds where the reface DX feels at home. Only the data management via Soundmondo is annoying. And it doesn't offer bank data transfer via MIDI. Would be happy if it had a USB-to-Device interface to which a USB stick could be connected and and if it had the possibility to read midi sysex of older 4 OP FM synths like TX-81Z, DX-11, DX-21, DX27 etc.
    Anyway it's a nice synth and I love it.

      Agree and I've never heard 32 TRULY GREAT patches on ANY synth. And I've been in this game for over 40 years. Most synths have maybe a dozen truly great individual sounds. Then the rest are just filler. Or variants on those outstanding patches. So 32 to me is plenty. And I would include 8 drum and percussion patches in that. Then 24 truly outstanding USEABLE patches. And believe me that's PLENTY.

    Hey there, thanks for this. I have been thinking of getting one of these but haven’t a clue about the technical side of it all. 2 questions If you don’t mind. 1. Where they sequences you were playing? I thought a patch was just one note that is the sound you have created and 2 how one you needed another thing to play the notes, the midi controller thing? Apologies if that doesn’t make too much sense. I really haven’t a clue.

    • @playeveryday01
      @playeveryday01  Год назад +2

      right a patch is just the sound you are hearing, think of it as your voice or instrument,I show off several in the video. Yeah so I used a KeyStep to play one note chords and one note patterns since at the time I knew very little about playing chord progressions by hand. I didn't need the midi controller but just decided to use it to make the video easy.

    I am not following your disdain for the Patchbase version of the editor for the Reface? Are you saying Patchbase is not allowed to make an editor just because two other people did it first? Are you saying they ripped off the code? The Patchbase company has made loads of editors for synths and modules, like 30-50 of them, including some obscure synths. The editor for the Reface DX seems to look some of their other ones, not a rip off of the previous programs you mentioned and the point is the it can be run from an IPAD. I don’t own any of their programs, but might get one for my somewhat obscure Yamaha FS1R.
    Other than my little disagreement on what you said about the Patchbase, thanks for the video. The other 2 programs look good as well, especially being able to convert other patches to the Reface format. I am thinking about picking up a Reface DX.

    • @playeveryday01
      @playeveryday01  2 года назад

      No they are charging $30 for a coat of paint while the other editor came from a hobbyist for free. Yamahas is also free. Never tried it so maybe it’s worth it idk? I do have an issue with the price at first glance.
