Ed. An idea for ya. If you have a spare LCD TV lying around that isn't worth repairing but the backlight still works, Gut everything out of it except the backlight and inverters and the main power supply. Find the 5V signal wire and the signal ground on the power supply board and cross those two together and the power supply should kick on. Mount it on the ceiling and you get an awesome shop light and it's brighter than a regular shoplight. For me it was. I'll get a vid up of mine.
I come here cos my 50 inch LG Plasma(2011) developed the same problem last night. But I hope I can find the concluding part of this. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth spending money to repair a six year old TV or just toss it.
I had this exact same problem on similar LG plasma even the same relay clicking sound , few years back, the guy that came took one measurment and after that just replaced one of the boards IF I remember correctly it was the power supply but I might be wrong , it was long ago, it was still in warranty so I think its really common problem with those panels
Hi, Ed, As a quick test, unplug all the buffer boards on the left from the YSus board. If it still stays on (with the power cables plugged in), then the YSus might be OK. Buffer boards are a very common fault with plasmas. The chips tend to overheat or just wear out. You can often find which chip is faulty by testing for continuity between the ground plane on the buffer board and the pins on the ribbon connectors (run the meter probe along the pins).
Hi Aussie50, I have this exact LG Plasma Model that you are demonstrating on (42PT250-TA). My wife was watching TV when she heard a loud POP and the tv went off. When I try to turn it on it attempts to cycle on and fails just like you show in your video. I didn't find any blown capacitors, no burnt out or cracked parts, so I got a voltmeter to start testing and this is my result. When i unplug the Y board from the Z board the tv attempts to turn on and fails. When i unplug the digital board from the power board, i can't turn the TV on (the red Standby light is OFF). When i unplug the Z board from the power board the tv is able to turn on. I tested the voltage outputs on the power board and they are giving good readings(VS should be 201 and is reading 202 and Va should be 55 and is reading 55, The digital power is also good Should be 17 and is reading 16.8) I used the Voltmeter's Continuity settings to test the fuses, which are all fine. At this point it seems that the problem is either the Z board (or whatever it is plugged into to the right of it), or the digital board. How do i pin point where the problem is ? How do i test which components on the Z board needs replacing, if i can't get power to it ? What could have made the large POP sound if its not a fuse or capacitor ? Do i buy the whole board Z Board, part number EBR68342001 ? I see (at the site below) there are three boards available and i'm not sure which one i need. www.encompassparts.com/item/8419717/LG/EBR68342001/Hand_Insert_Pcb_Assembly 1) LG Hand Insert Pcb Assembly - $50 2) Green Choice Hand Insert Pcb Assembly - $26 3) Green Choice ZBoard -$21 Any suggestion ? Thanks in Advance,
G'day mate!, the pop could have been a semiconductor blowing out, it often happens discretely against the heat-sink or between the pins and is very hard to ID visually. given how cheap the z board is I would be inclined to try that first off. a loud pop from a plasma is almost always a sustain or PSU failure, in your case, Z Sustain, and in my case, Y Sustain (the replacement board came with spare buffers that turned out to be blown, but did not get a chance to kill the PSU)
Aussie50 Thanks for your quick response! I called up the website that i listed earlier and unfortunately, they only sell to Licensed Service Centers. I can't find this part anywhere else do you have any suggestions where i can look (EBR68342001) ? I also wasn't able to detach the Z board from the board to the right of it. They are connected with white+black clips and i couldn't figure out how the clips work (i don't want to break them accidentally) can you please tell me how they are called or show me how to disconnect them ? Thanks
***** G'day mate!. thats a shame they only deal with centers, that price is awesome, cost price. next best thing is to search ebay for the part number and revision number. The interconnect board connectors (black and white) are just push together pin connectors, they take a bit of force to slip apart, but will do so pretty easy with firm pressure and a bit of wiggling.
Aussie50 After testing and replacing several suspect capacitors on the Z board without success, I purchased a new Z board from sears @0057 . Bottom line: Unfortunetly it didn't help. Process: I replaced the old Z board with the new one. = TV failed to turn on. Disconnected the Y Board from the Z board = TV stayed powered on. This was actually different from what happened earlier, see previous post (where the TV powered off after disconnecting the Z and the Y), which seems to imply that the Z board is now wokring properly while the Y board is the problem. Stupidly, i reconnected the Y to the Z while the TV was still powered ON. There was a pop at the connection and now the TV powers off even if the Y board is unplugged, suggesting that i messed up somehting on the Z board again..... So i'm afraid that the new Z board helped , but replugging the Y into the Z (while TV powered on) screwed it up again. And the Y board is busted. I think now is the time to say farewell to the Television and junk it. I spent already 75$ on the Z board and its not worth getting a technitian which will charge me at least 75$ for a visit and expenses for a new boards. it will be cheaper to just upgrade to a new LED TV. How do i dispose of a TV ? Its upsetting that the TV didn't last longer than 4 years, what a waste of resources (rare earth metals, plastic, metal, money, time etc.) on the Plasma, i really liked this plasma. whats worse, it seems that all TVs are now made to last only 3-4 years and then something on them gets busted. Like disposable TVs, don't they make things to last anymore. ?? Aussie50 thanks for your help.
***** Ouch!, sounded like something was partially short elsewhere and the voltage surge finished it off :(, at least your okay tho, 280V DC would give you a hell of a shock!. Best way to recycle one of this age is to put it in the local classifieds so somebody else can use the panel or other parts (the PSU should be okay) you could still get $50 - 100 for it as a non working unit, at least that's what they go for here. or a last resort is to find your local waste disposal center and see if they have an E-Waste recycling program. I send all my really old TV carcasses there so they get recycled properly.

MOSFETs very rarely fail in intermittent manners. Almost always (99.5% of the time) dead short. If it is a Samsung D450 series I have encountered loud buzzing problems due to X-main. Not power board. But you can use a cardboard tube to narrow down exact position. There's a coil on the X-main which has problems, the glue/varnish cracks allowing it to buzz. Applying new glue usually fixes it.
hi, i have exact same tv, exact same symptoms (not powering up) disconected y-sustain and tried to power up but no change. any thoughts what else it could be would be much appreciated.
i have an LG plasma that wont start up too. Red light, then blue light under the TV flashes then turns off and goes back to red light standby, what can be wrong?
Yes same mine is Phillips and red and blue flash but picture comes on it's just pretty dim and unclear (blurry) there is brown stuff all over vent holes on back over well it's over everything inputs it's not dust it's something though ! Ifeel like it's why TV doesn't work took back off the brown dust-like stuff is everywhere
i opened mine and had 10 blown capacitors. i replaced them all and the tv still wont power up. doesnt matter if i unplug the x or y board it still wont push the power all the way through the power supply. it just clicks. any ideas besides replacing power supply board?

Hey @aussie50, I picked up an LG 50PN6500 that was thrown out in my apartment block. Manufactured in July 2013, panel looks perfect but the HDMI connector has been ripped off the main board. It seems like the logic on the board has been damaged. Was wondering if you've come across any in your travels? Being so new might be difficult to find a part. All the ones on eBay are for US models. Seems a shame to throw out a whole 50" TV just because the main board is damaged :-(
Hi all, maybe somebody here can help. I was given a 51 inch Samsung Plasma TV model PN51D530A3F. When I turned It on It would "tick" from the "power board" and I traced the problem down to the "X main board". On the "X main board" I replaced 2 ( RPJ30H1 transistors), 4 ((30G124 transistors) except I used (30J124 transistors)rated 170v higher) and 2 ( SF10A400H) diodes. After replacing these parts the TV came to life but now for the problem. The "X main board" gets so HOT that you can barely touch the metal cover on the back of the TV. None of the Caps were bulging ,should I have replaced them and would replacing the Caps eliminate the very high temperature.
Hello Friend, I have a LG Plasma TV 32 inches. There is no picture and sound only. The operating light and the remote control are working, but without the picture What is the fault? Is it a mosfet or something else in the board? 30G122 & 30F122 & RF2001 Please
you could have a bad lamp if your tv has the lamps. Shine a flashlight in the screen and see if you can see the picture. If you can now the fun begins.
Where do you buy replacement parts for TV's? And is there anything i can read up on that goes over common faults and trouble shooting of faulty TVs? Friend has a 50" plasma that refuses to start and wouldn't mind having a go fixing it.
If your plasma "squeals like a pig" the panel is probably broken and that is why it does not work, nothing to do with power board or X/Y-main even if some fets are blown.
yes edd, I think that's why the prices are getting cheaper to buy these type of sets. what you did in the vid is correct by removing power plugs but apparently these buggers have self protection on each board so that trick might not work as I did try and got no ware on the last one that I did; as I said I had to replace both its a BITCH!. and know you now why its not doubled sided crap... :-)
Would anyone be able to give me some advice? I have an LG 42LH3000-ZA. It's from Dec 2009. The TV turns on but only the top half of the screen works. I've been told it's the panel, would anyone say different or have any tips on troubleshooting?
LG rarely have any problems compared to Samsung! I should know I install about 250 TV,s a year, Panasonic are very good if you want quality not one breakdown in years..
i have a samsung 42 inch 720p plasma, i bought it early 2007, still working great.. i prefer plasma's over LCD as much better picture in my opinion.. all plasma's less than 50 inch are worth repairing as they are becoming a dying breed, i got lucky on ebay with a 37 inch Panasonic for the bedroom.. older tv's are built much better build quality than newer one's, new tv's have little life expectancy, Cost reduced to the point that you don't even get traditional AV connectors on them any more
My LG Plasma has been making that clicking sound for years and taking ages to turn on properly. But it finally has stopped coming on. I got a quote from a repair man and he said power supply isn't working properly. 660$ !!!!!!!!! To repair. That sound right?
i have samsungs all threw my house i think they are great why do u hate on samsung? ive hear lg are terrible and samsung are great never heard other way around except for u
Ed.

Hello Aussie50, may I know the Part Number of the Y-sustain board? Had the same Plasma TV. Thanks very much.
hiya edd,
I had a similar unit 3 months ago you will need to replace both panels as one goes open and it will take out the other visa visor check out the link to this chap...
Looking forward to this series. Very much enjoy your channel!
Same here. Samsungs and Sony's. Lg's were used for target practice ^.^
I have a Samsung HPR5052 and had to replace the power supply about 6 mos ago. recently the unit turned on but there was not sound or picture. That plasma sounded a little loud with it's buzzing. The power supply could be borderline on the way out, unplugging the bigger board may be bringing up the voltage just past the cut-off. i do miss vcr's and crts. the old Philips tvs with the awesome boards that swing out
Wow we've got the same tv ours is from 2010 hasn't let us down but it has always made a buzzing sound as you turn it on though
Great find eddy'
Hope ya manage to fix it mate. Looks a nice tv. It maybe a transistor out on it!! If ya have the time you could whip out one by one and test em!! I had a tv to fix' had a transister blown and it did the same wouldnt power up" as it was shorting out!! Would stay in sleep!

Hey @aussie50, I picked up an LG 50PN6500 that was thrown out in my apartment block. Manufactured in July 2013, panel looks perfect but the HDMI connector has been ripped off the main board. Seems a shame to throw out a whole 50" TV just because the main board is damaged :-(
Did anyone notice the differing colors of the pair of inductors on the Ysus board? The lower one looked rather baked.
Hello sir how did u fix the problem please respond
so was it the y Sustain board or the power supply was wrong with it

If your plasma "squeals like a pig" the panel is probably broken and that is why it does not work, nothing to do with power board or X/Y-main even if some fets are blown.
if it's making noise that's the fets on the ysustain board but u right it could be coming from a broken panel
More for the MOT hehe, hopefully they'll fix up!!
bright sparklies are easily repairable on Samsung plasmas.
yes edd, I think that's why the prices are getting cheaper to buy these type of sets.
what you did in the vid is correct by removing power plugs but apparently these buggers have self protection on each board so that trick might not work as I did try and got no ware on the last one that I did; as I said I had to replace both its a BITCH!.
and know you now why its not doubled sided crap... :-)
Would anyone be able to give me some advice?
I have an LG 42LH3000-ZA. It's from Dec 2009.
The TV turns on but only the top half of the screen works. I've been told it's the panel, would anyone say different or have any tips on troubleshooting?
now that I saw the video several times I am I am starting to remember wich board it was, I am 80% sure it was the power supply
you got bad fets on the y sustain
You sound like Buck from Far Cry 3. What accent is this?
LG rarely have any problems compared to Samsung! I should know I install about 250 TV,s a year, Panasonic are very good if you want quality not one breakdown in years..
It a turn on an off...why??
Wow, That's quite interesting
i have a samsung 42 inch 720p plasma, i bought it early 2007, still working great.. i prefer plasma's over LCD as much better picture in my opinion..
all plasma's less than 50 inch are worth repairing as they are becoming a dying breed, i got lucky on ebay with a 37 inch Panasonic for the bedroom..
older tv's are built much better build quality than newer one's, new tv's have little life expectancy, Cost reduced to the point that you don't even get traditional AV connectors on them any more
And Comes the Rain
Thank you

My LG Plasma has been making that clicking sound for years and taking ages to turn on properly. But it finally has stopped coming on. I got a quote from a repair man and he said power supply isn't working properly. 660$ !!!!!!!!! To repair. That sound right?
