    Thanks for the video and tips. Revived my family's dead led tv, Sony KD-55XD7004. Saved me ordering another main board, just used a hot air gun, circling underneath the chip area for about 10min until i could feel the heat through to the chip's 'white' heat spreader. Reminded me of working with bga components some 8+ years back. You know your stuff well. Thanks from Finland 🇫🇮

    Friggin amazing. 🙌

    Thanks for the tip. It worked for my TV, which had similar symptoms. Instead of halogen bulb I used incandescent light of rating 100W for 1hr about 3cm above the board. TV turned on successfully. There were also few white lines on the display, they also got fixed. Happy... :) Thanks for the tip.

    GREAT information, I am from the old school of not using too much heat on transistors or any solid state devices, I find this amazing that that heat lamp re flowing solder did not destroy those chips.
    But again like I said I am from the old school, vacuum tubes and some transistor work back in the 60's.
    Thanks for the great educational video, enjoy your channel.

    We actually got this TV from our local waste site. The TV looked like it was clean, it was missing a remote control though.
    We turned it on and it worked great as a rarely used bedroom TV. I got a remote off Amazon.
    Then our 65" Samsung back light bar (just one, we think) has gone out.
    So we brought the LG out. It was solid for 2 days. Then it had all the problems you described.
    So glad we found you!!! We're going to try this to see if it works.
    I hope you have a video showing how to replace the backlight bar on my Samsung.

    I just cover the surrounding area with tin foil. The chip is isolated. put a nickel or quarter on top of the chip for bit of weight and a very small piece of solder on the tin foil next to the chip. Turn on a hair dryer on low or a heat gun on low and heat up until the solder on the foil melts, then heat for 15 sec more. Works every time.

    Excellent video my good sir, I picked up a LG model - 55LS4600-UA at the recyclers today, I opened it up and looked at the capacitors on the power board none were bulged. The issue I was having was the RED Stand By Light would light up. But if you tried turning the TV on, nothing would happen. I used a Wagner Heat Gun for about a minute on the IC101 and IC1201, then after letting it cool, POW! the TV fired up! I'm glad I got it for free though, since i didn't notice the small crack in the screen till i got it to light up. Wish i could fix the screen now, but i guess it would cost too much. Just glad i learned something today :)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 лет назад

      Only if you pronounce it as an America. I am not, I pronounce it the British way with the "l" and since I don't have an accent I pronounce the o as a short vowel, where as a real Brit would pronounce a long o so it would sound more like sold-der.
      If you are an American you are forgiven. You also pronounce the letter z incorrect. It's "zed" not "zee"! 😁

    I have a very similar TV, with exactly the same power board. While it was playing it suddenly gave a loud bang and was dead. Other problem than described in this video. Measuring, the first fuse behind the power cord was dead (EL7-EL8, of type 5A 250V). Replaced it, powered it and after a few seconds another bang but this time the first fuse (which I replaced) was still OK so must be another component blown. Any suggestions? Do I dig deeper or do I just replace the whole power board?
    EDIT: I hadn't fixed the power board properly, learned from this video that they provide ground connection. When properly screwing it back on it powered up just fine. Me happy. My first repair of this kind and found it pretty much myself except for that part with the screws for which this video helped me. Thanks!

    @trevneuzerling4708 8 лет назад +1

    I usually put the whole board on alfoil in the oven preheated to 200 degrees Celsius for six and a half minutes then leave oven door open and turned off so bga slowly cools down then take it out after one hour .This slightly melts the dry solder in the ball grid array ,can cover some capacitors with bits of foil so they don't get to 200 degrees but I don't I just take my chances that caps are rated at 205 lol .Mind you I'd never do this for customers or charge people for what's maybe a temporary repair , just for my family and friends free of charge :) I have tried other methods like hot air gun etc but oven provides a more accurate way to melt dry/bad solder .I do this method as it works but there is always risk of damaging the board and or components so please do so at your own risk ... :)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +1

      200' is not hot enough to reflow solder, all that does is expand the board slightly, and temporarily fixes the problem. The light bulb fix is the most reliable one I have tried, and I generally only do it on my own equipment.

    Cool, saved my tv after watching this...i was about to throw my LG 3D TV 47LW5700 away.. my LG was not turning on and power light was blinking,, because its on the wall and heavy. I didn't feel like taking it down and opening it.. after hours of shopping online for a new TV i was pissed and installed an old 22 lcd tv in front of the LG until i can find a good deal..it was a good excuse to buy a new oled tv or something.. i was just pissed to spend 1.5k ..i wasn't prepared.. i couldn't sleep.. anyway. After 8 hours or so I saw this youtube and i had to try this out first before giving up .. i had to open the back panel and every tv is different. The 47LW5700 has all the screws around the perimeter and about 5 screws around the center. Once exposed, i checked the voltage and was reading 3.5v too. So i just went ahead and use a heat gun and an infra red temperature reader.. the two chips were covered by a heat sink.. i did not know how to remove them so i just heated directly over the heat sink layer. About 20-30 sec of heat to reach 200F The heat probably transferred over the chip.. then i allowed cool down,,at first it did not work, then it just started to work again. I was dam happy...woke up the wife (she did not appreciate that) but needed her help to hang the TV on the wall. Started to watch TV for about 20 minute..and bang! TV shutdown by it self and turn it self back on.. was kinda disapointed.. but atleast it works...unhooked the tv from the wall again.. reopened the case and re heated, but this time i heated atleast 10 good minutes at 300F.. reclosed and put it back on the wall.. this time it worked better. No shutdown..2 hours later still no shutdown..3 hours later still going strong,, it looks like the reflow is working this time. However i noticed while closing the rear panel that LG made holes to evacuate the heat through those holes that are right over the two main chips.. so next time i may just heat directly there without opening the panel. But i understand this is not a permanent fix.. but atleast it will give me some time i hope to find the best TV deal...we are only few weeks from blackfriday..

    The soundbar didn't turn off with it while being directly connected to it via ARC and I haven't been able to turn it on since.
    Power cycling and everything but nada,just by that sound alone is it safe to say this would be a powersupply issue?>

    Thanks for the insight. I bought a used TV and after bringing it home, it wouldn't turn on. Power board has the standby voltage being transmitted to main board. So I assumed Main Board must have kicked it. I am going to try your method and see if it helps.

    I have had success doing this, but then I put a flat PC video card heatsink and fan on them to stop them warming up excessively. It's the heat and cool cycles that kill these BGA solder joints. The chip heats up but the PCB doesn't.

    I've worked on one of these over a year ago same problem. Lead free solder suck. Causes lots of connection problems. BGA chips suck as well.

    I have a BK hot air station. Just curious at What temperature do think would be best and for how long if I wanted to heat up and reflow a bga component?
    The issue with my TV I think is different, I tested the led+ connectors and I'm getting 74 volts with leds connected to power supply board and only 70 volts when I disconnect the leds from the power supply board.
    Does this sound like a faulty power supply to you?
    TV symptoms: backlights keep turning off. If I turn the TV off and back on again the TV works for about an hour then the backlight goes out again. Audio works fine and tcon board looks good (have image with flashlight).

    Filter caps looks a bit bulgy might wanna replace them. How how hot does it need to be? My standby was 3.3 too, so must be common.

    Great video. Thank you for actually taking the time to explain what you're doing. I have a LG 55LB5900 here only 2 years old that keeps flashing from black to picture steadily. Sound is fine & menus flash as well. Any ideas you have sure would help. Thanks.

    Hi fella, don't know if this is worthy of note to you but will share all the same. Our LG 42LC46 (2007, owned from new) the last few months started displaying symptoms which pointed towards a main board issue (after running a while, screen was flickering between picture/static on all inputs & on one occasion picture completely went with backlight and sound both still working, controls locked up. However, on inspection it seems (fingers crossed) to have merely been tarnished connections on the cable between sig. and Tcon boards. Time will tell, but heating/cooling/tapping the boards couldn't reproduce the symptoms but touching the connector on the main board did, cleaned connectors and seems better now. Just in case it's any use to you.

      I had that on a Sony but it was the tabs between the tcon and the screen.

    I hava a pioneer sound system. its main chip was showing the same problem. The unit was turning on but getting off after a while. I zeroed the problem to the main board chip. But as usual, I got faulty chips fro ebay twice. lastly the unit went to scrap.

    I have this TV and started having the exact issue described in your video. Except I think I got lucky. After I took the back off and laid the TV face down, I plugged it in and it turned right on! ... ??? I guess maybe I had a ground issue? I have no clue. But I did tighten all the screws like you suggested at the beginning. Some of the ones on the power board didn’t seem very snug either .... so I’m guessing ground was issue? Who knows.
    Thanks for the video though.

    My tv clicks when trying to turn it on, but then clicks again and nothing on the screen, what might be the problem? Because you said in the video that it did not attempt to power on. I think mine does but nothing on.

      +roomba I am just killing time now with an old board and my light bulb. I will attempt to remove a BGA chip using nothing more than a Halogen lamp.The required temperature to reflow is about 218'C and a lamp will get it to that temperature over time. So far I have been lucky with the smaller chips I have tried this technique on. Larger ones would likely need a board warmer, and heat gun.

    When you bake the chip for an hour, was TV standing as normal? In other words, was that PC board standing vertically attached to the tv ? Did you have to press the chip down while it was hot? Thanks

    Thanks. A lightning hit my TV and I think the power supply was fried because of the sound I heard. I get no voltage from it. I have one question: If the power supply is out why m when you turn it on, the front led blinks three times and dies ?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад

      Lightning = BAD.
      The power supply is likely not out. It is probably a failure somewhere else.
      The fact that the power light blinks means that at least part of the power supply is working. There are typicality 2 supplies. a low voltage low power standby supply to power the cpu and remote, and a higher power sup;ly to operate the rest of the set. It is possible that the higher power supply was damaged, or something on the main board that controls the power. Lightning can cause damage anywhere. Might be further ahead to just replace.

    Hello. I have an LG Smart TV 49UK6200PLA model 2019 wich is dead. I was watching a movie and suddenly it stopped. It has no power, no backlight and the standby led is off. I have checked the voltages of the power source and it's ok. I wanted to do a reflow of the BGA chip like you and like many others did after watching your video but when I removed the radiator, I saw a very small SMD component, 2 or 3mm long, unmarked, named L2311 on the board that was blackened and melted. I believe it is an inductance or something. I think this is what causes the TV defect so please tell me what it is and what I can replace it with? I appreciate any help.

    TLDR: very helpful vid.
    60" lg plasma w/red standby led no display&sound, ruled out basics/pwr cable/power board (no obv damages/traces/loose connections/bulging or leaky caps, volts/grounds good) hadn't considered reflow (specifically cpu/other chips) will attempt that too. Thank you for additional possibilities.
    Recently obtained an older lg 60" plasma, TV's are pretty cheap these days and most are not worth the time trying to fix but I miss the picture quality of the old plasmas over most of the newer TV's and enjoy learning different repair techniques especially since I'm an electrician by trade so your video was very informative and to the point on your thinking process and has given me some additional areas of attack.

    I’ve watched this twice, and although I have similar problems, I.e. my standby light blinks slowly, the TV doesn’t turn on. If I wait till the blinking stops I usually hit the power button and it turns on. Today however after watching again, I couldn’t get it to turn on. But I started pushing the buttons on the back, channel up, channel down. After hitting the channel down the TV turned on.

    Very well done! Can the board be heated from the back with a heat gun and to what temperature? I watched many of the other's showing a bad power supply board and know that is not the 100% given. Thanks again for your thorough step by step instructional video.

      Best to check them anyway and see if they could be the problem somehow. If the board was cracked around the screw area, it may lead to a working unit for a while just by doing so with it.
