Seit 10 Jahren bin Goethe-Fan und mir wurde die Ehre zuteil, seit diesem Jahr im Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv Weimar einen Teil von Goethes Nachlass zu restaurieren. Der Mensch, von dem ich bisher am meisten restauriert habe, ist Zelter! Er hat wirklich unfassbar viele Briefe an Goethe geschrieben, leider auf überwiegend schlechtem Papier, weswegen ich ihn das ein oder andere Mal verflucht habe 🤭 ...aber sein Konzert für Bratsche stimmt mich wieder versöhnlich! He declared it 'nonsense', so that Goethe (whose poem Berlioz based his work on) did not send back an acknowledgement! He was, perhaps, also why Mendelssohn had a predisposed low opinion of Berlioz when they met (tho' they remained 'friendly' relations. Poor Zelter, this work has it's attractions, but proves he was far below assessing such a genius that Berlioz was even then...

C.F.Zelter was prolific in his time. In addition to composer was a renowned teacher. Important musicians studied with Zelter among them: Mendelssohn and Fanny Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Otto Nicolai. He was also a friend of Goethe's and wrote music for many of his poems.
My first impression of this piece was that it was a poorly-written piece, but when you listen to the orchestra, you realize the orchestra has all the unifying themes. What other concerto for viola in E-flat has the unifying themes mostly in the orchestra, and has a Rondo for the last movement? Mozart Symphony Concertante. I’m not going to put this piece in that league by any means, but it does sound nice and make sense when you hear it with the entire orchestra. Of course, the Rolla concertos have some similarities, except that their range goes much higher on the viola..
This concerto needs more thought, just using the viola like a big violin just doesn't work. The violin shines on that role. On the contrary, the viola should what the violin can't do well.
