4:15 is so beautiful it hurts.. Jesus christ it feels so reminiscent... A month ago I found this movement beautiful. I had no idea my relationship was over... now it sounds tragic. God I love this music.
Since I discovered this performance last night I cannot stop listening to it .....on repeat. So hauntingly beautiful....the cello at first than the violin....wow so beautiful.... And than later when the viola plays the theme and the violin plays the sixteenths....how can something be so perfect, so moving.....
I absolutely admire Carter Brey's intro.... especially the part when he started to use all G string (a smart choice, compared to others) and as a result, the color of sound is perfect and he can also make those heavenly slides between the notes!
Agreed, he can pull it off beautifully, but i won't want to see nor hear anything less beautifully executed just for bragging rights to stay on the G string.
Gary... the cello itself will dictate what register the player can play and make the best result. Some cellos play perfectly well on the G string in that run, others do not. So it's not only a matter of personal choice, it's what your particular instrument can do. My point is, it was a "smart choice" for his cello and him, but that doesn't mean he's made a "smarter" choice than another cellist for her or his own cello. I could sit right next to Carter (and I have) and he could play that line. Then we could switch cellos and he could attempt to play that line on my cello and it be a failure... or rather, not the "smart choice," on that particular cello. It works the other way, too, though. Meaning, I could play the same run on the G string on MY cello, then try to play it on his and it not come out as well. We each know our instruments intimately, and what they're capable of. Funny thing is, Carter probably was joking around in starting to practice that melody and seeing how many notes could he get away with playing on the G string, lol. Obviously he more than got away with playing the entire line in that register and beautifully, lucky for us ;-). And by the way, he, and that cello, would have sounded just as beautiful had he chosen not to play it all on the G string.
@@morphflow It was an instrument made for me in 2010 by James McKean. I've no idea who the anonymous saputello is who made the previous comment, but it's completely wrong as well as remarkably prolix.
@@cbrey Hey man, wasn’t being a wiseass (nessun senso dell’ umorismo). I still love your playing, but I guess you missed all the compliments I gave you in alllll those words 😂.

ah well , yes indeed one can do thumbs down for such a version. There are plus and minuses/ups and downs with all performances. Some glaring aspects for sure...
This piece speaks to me. I also know Schumann wrote this piece with his wife Clara on the mind...the progressions. This movement expresses love to me. Reminds me of a person I use to love dearly...well still do haha. Goodness...Schumann just brings out emotion even in YT comments. One of my fav composers☺❤
What a lovely performance! I believe I saw Beth Guterman Chu play an unaccompanied Hindemith viola sonata years ago and was quite impressed - even more so with her chamber music skills now.
This piece made me feel so emotionally frustrated 😭I want to be the instrumentalist too but can't do🥺 Oh Schumann, how you beautifully made this for us to enjoy👍👏🙏🏾
Absolutely beautiful. Other versions I've heard have been unbalanced by too heavy a hand at the piano. Joyce Yang shows incredible nuance and restraint.
Bravi tutti 👏👏👏 This performance was outstanding. Everyone in the team made this piece a magical experience for the listener to hear - something tender and beautiful to behold.
Outstanding. This is a highly nuanced piece. The recording mixing work appears a tad less in-balance (especially for the piano) than an experienced ear might prefer, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. And that lovely Presbyterian church is among my favorites. Thank you.
All four play beautifully. Carter tuned his bottom string down to B-flat before the movement started. I could tell by the way he fingered certain passages involving the bottom string. The effect of that deep pedal B-flat is extremely important and must never be omitted.
i did enjoy the video alot! in fact I'm looking for a good cello teacher. I've been searching for a few months and i might consider auditionig for curtis
This is one of the default Samsung alarms lmao. Guess I gotta thank them for introducing me to this beautiful piece.
Same here. I have bought Samsung phone and I fell in love with this beautiful peice.

Une perle !
Merci ❤
When the Viola takes on the melody, it's utterly sublime.
It really should be in mid-position in a trio - alto connects the parts with supporting textures, after all.
you know the chamber music !!!!
Carter Brey is such an amazing cellist-

my favorite part~♡
I just discovered this today and listened to 4 different videos, one after the other; How did I miss this for so many years? Utterly beautiful
How did Schumann get the musical inspiration for this piece? It is so addictive to the heart.
Think Clara Schumann

Indeed. It is so powerful... trying to describe it in words feel so unjust. How everyone on the planet isn't deeply moved by it is beyond me.
++++++...
Me too; I listened and relistened; it is very moving, and beckons deep within my soul
Superb performance! Robert Schumann, a great and still underrated composer
Underrated, is that so ?

Bravo. Among the most beautiful Andante movements in chamber music.
almost like heaven,,,,
Schumann’s soul was in torment, closer to hell than heaven when he wrote this I think
