It makes you wonder how many of these incredibly complex, beautiful songs have been simply lost to time, like many languages and stories. How blessed are we to have this guy
Playing ancient asetru music of the Gods on an instrument that that hasn't existed for 1000 years or more and you had to make yourself and learn how to play it..absolutely incredible, spellbinding and priceless.. Hagall odin!
"I'm gonna demonstrate this a little bit, then I'm gonna sing a bit about sorcery." Only the first part is "Ár var alda" which is entirely instrumental. The second song is Vindavla / Vindavlarljod.
What's the language? I recognize some words because of it's similarities with english. It's old english or saxon? Or is something else? I love how it sounds
It's Norwegian! We've got two official languages up here - Einar sings in Nynorsk, used mainly in western Norway. Very poetic compared to the more commonly Bokmål language. 🙂
Bengt Svenson sorry but that's not musically possible. Sure his harp may have a unique sound from how he builds them, but someone else will always be able to match the tuning. I'm pretty sure he's tuned to the standard jouhikko tuning, drone in the middle, a fourth above on the bottom string, and a fifth above on the top string. Sounds like F, B flat, E flat possibly. Could be wrong though.
Hey man, i think that it´s in D#m, the first string is in D#, the second one in Bb, and the third in D# again but one octave lower. It´s the power chord of D#m. Greetings from Tenerife, The Canary Islands.
Oftentimes he uses standard Jouhikko tuning as described three replies back, but in this case I think he is tuned in open fifths, so a B flat, an F, and a B flat an octave below. I am a Jouhikko maker, and I use both of these tunings: the open fifth kind is more in the style of the Shetland Gue rather than of the Jouhikko.
J. Sleeka old norse was split into two groups old western norse, what later became islandsk, norsk and färöer and old eastern norse what later became svensk and dansk. so norwegian and icelandic come from the same branch of old norse. but since Iceland was more isolated thn norway, it kept the language more or less unchanged and it is still the closest to old norse.
Are you sure about this? I mean, do you speak either of these tongues, or has someone who does confirmed it to you? I don't, but it sounds pretty Norwegian, plus composing such a work in a dead tongue would be, while not impossible, quite an accomplishment.

Einar gave the best discription ive ever heard of his music "its like time travel, you play this and *snap* its like its 1000 years ago"
weirdest thing is that when i read your comment in the exact moment Einar said that in the video same time i read it in my head :D
A tip: you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Sonny Ahmad yea, I have been using flixzone for years myself :D

Einar Selvik you play for the Gods the finest music in the world!
Kvitrafn is such an inspiring person. There are few people that impress me in the same way and I deeply admire his work.
How about now with the latest album Kvitravn? I love it.
I can't stop coming back, such a gorgeous song
There are very, very few Men who can impress me with their Talent as much as Einar. What a true Stunner He is 👌💖
The mame of this song is Vindavla.

thank you for posting this. I enjoyed the aspect he tells of the instrument at the beginning.
To stem confusion, it's both. The intro is Ár var Alda, and when he begins singing it turns into vindavla
Thank you very much Einar!
Such feeling and passion. Moves your spirit.
Voice and nickeharpa altogether are equivalent to an orchestra. Great.
Best Regards from France.

Alright I'm that's it, I need a tagelharpa
Easy to build...;)

Check Wardruna's album Skald, if you haven't already ;)
Inspiring!
I wonder how he knows what modes to use in his compositions?

@@TheStorm1210 no, It's Vindavla.
My beard grew up 30 inches with that song...
I'm a girl but wish I could grow a beard!
Im building a 3 string tagelharpa, anybody knows the tuning Einar uses for his tagelharpa?
from reading comments on videos people found his tuning nut doesnt sound like his he hand makes his instruments so his will always sound unique

It might not be here but I'm pretty sure it's often tuned to D A D
@@fryingpan3503 Either that or a step higher to E B E
He is cute.
is he singing in norwegian ? also if audience is islandic, do they understand most of the verses in the singing ?
He singing in old Norse, so I'd say it's closer to Icelandic rather than Norwegian.

the old norse is very close to the icelandic language today - although we do not speak in that way today,we can understand it pretty well.
This is vindavla from the skald album .....but
Awesome video either way
The first one he played was ar var alda
Gah someone tell me what poem he's singing? I figured it was the Voluspa but I cannot find the verses hes singing

Does anyone happen to know what its tuned to?
I just ordered one and I wanna learn this song
Eb-Bb-Eb
use your ears, discover the sound yourself, there in lies the magic
Does anyone know what tuning Einar has on the taglharpe in this video?
I think it's CGG but i could be wrong
@@MegaChevy65 Thanks for the reply! I'll try that on mine and see if it sounds the same!
@@emilsundelin1764 Several tunings sounds more or less the same on his song...like CGC/DAD/EBE
Anybody knows the name of the second tune he plays? Ar Var Alda is just the first
I'm pretty certain the 2nd half is "Ansur" off their album Yggdrasil.
Vindavla
Where was this ?
Einar Selvik performance at The Nordic House, Reykjavik.

Lyrics?
no clue he created them himself and isnt part of the wardruna's version of this song
I believe its a poem from one of the Edda's which I am unsure...
