    I know he has a mental disorder but somehow I find him more sane and positive than so many people. He is deeply searching for something to keep him having hope and trying to stay positive even when surrounded by people who don´t fully understand what he is been through. "I am gonna take all this negativity and use it as a fuel" How laudable is that?

      I used it as fuel. I began to think "If nobody cares whether I live or die, I need to be the one to care. If I'm worthless, I need to be a better person."
      Positivity via negativity.

      He’s deffo got type one bipolar. To have bipolar you only need to have a manic episode to be diagnosed so his character may not get depressive episodes as much if at all. However I think this film just focuses on his manic episode coz obviously he would’ve been depressed after the whole situation with his wife.

    I think this movie, in a way normalizes disorders like bipolar and mood swings, which is not something regularly seen in mainstream media. I have Aspergers and ADHA, and it’s difficult enough for me as it is. I’m about to start seeing a therapist and hopefully things in my life will begin to flow more smoothly, etc. This sort of stuff is becoming more common and it’s becoming more obvious. The best thing to do from here is address the issue.

    My mom sufres from bipolar disorder (i dont know how it is measured or like ranked) but it was way more different than Bradley coopers portrayal but so similar at the same time. I think I can see her Way more with Jennifer Lawrence portrayal.
    I say the ranked thing because i hear the stories of other bipolar people and my. mom never reached to manic episodes (well not in the most crazy ones)
    Like idont know how to describe it, it made me feel so trapped at times, like if my mom always stayed in a very low mood,, not talking to me even mad, and this could last weeks and months, and all of a sudden, be so happy and wanting to do everything, move out of our appartment, go out to eat, go to the movies, etc. That exact thing led her to be in credit/debt a lot.
    Sometimes she had her rages which where like twice a year but they were so incredibly destructive because once she beated my sister so bad a neighbour called the cops like it was pretty crazy.
    But she was very sad most of the times and I was pretty much the only person that stood by her Side all the time, because she had that same hope Bradley Cooper had,
    I know that this movie was kind of comical, but it really made me cry becarse I remmeered my mom how she tried so hard to beat her disease, and I knew all my Life she was a good person, if she didn't was bipolar she would've been one of the nicet people you could have ever meet.
    That scene when he fought his dad to fists and pushed his mother and then apologized to everyone remember me so much of my mom, i always wanted to help her and i knew it wasn't her fault but sometimes it was very very hard
    And like for example what Kanye west is passing though or even antonio brown, im sorry for them because Kanye is a clinically diagnosed bipolar and AB might be also, they seem like they need genuine help, and leave social media. Like if i had the power i would help them just as i help my mom, theyre humans who once where kids and might be confunde by their behavior
    sorry for my bad English but my first idiom is Spanish

      Ditto. I live with this nightmarish disorder, and his portrayal of it is spot on - not for everyone with this illness - it’s different for each of us - but even when properly medicated which I have been for years - his performance is right on target for me. It’s not an easy road to navigate, and it’s wonderful that this movie speaks to that.

    I thought of this movie relatable a few years ago when I had my first panic attack from anxiety. Fast forward to the beginning of this year, I had a similar episode to the one where he snaps at his mom and dad, and I was shortly diagnosed with bipolar disorder not long after that event, and it was quick, too. I kinda put two and two together when I researched the combination of medicines they gave me. I’m now watching these scenes trying to explain bipolar disorder to someone and it’s taking forever to reply because this shit made me so emotional how relatable it all is even more so now. Everything. From the uncomfortable questions, something I’ve always done and always said idk I’m curious, to saying random shit, to Tiffany’s promiscuity (albeit not at that level). All too relatable. Crying, ngl.

    Minor spoiler alert! I thought the first half of this film was brilliant. I remember the year that followed my diagnosis of 'undiagnosed bipolar' (sounds like a contradiction I know, but they refer to it as this in the movie too, I believe) and the part where the wedding song triggers things, as well as the part where he chucks Hemmingway out the window and later his dad is moved to punch him, felt like I was being shown a video of my own life.Someone mentions above that they don't shoot the depressive state, but I think they do, but it's perhaps a bit condensed. That is to say, the parts where he's in the docs office and the doc is telling him he must take the meds, and then his mum is, and he's constantly running, would be the parts that actually feel like hell if you're inside the person - I often found my depression involved having to constantly move from one place to the next to avoid having to think. Funny enough, I stopped enjoying the second half of the movie because it lost the realism a bit. I can believe that the love and understanding of another person can go a long way to helping, and I even found it believable enough that a beautiful young woman just dropped into his life, but I found it a bit less realistic that his wife wanted him back towards the end at the dance competition. But that's just my subjective viewpoint based on, well, finding that people often don't understand, or don't want to understand; that it's easier for them to just back off.

    Though this movie isn't perfect with portraying mental illness (specifically psychopathology), I appreciate that the writers took the time to show that Pat's problems weren't his Bipolar symptoms. His modus operandi, his obsession and beliefs about his wife and how he's supposed to treat the people in his life were the problem. Like, medication can prevent mania and depression, but it can't fix you, and this is clear focus in the screenplay of the film.

    What (Tao's) skilful planter plants
    Can never be uptorn;
    What his skilful arms enfold,
    From him can ne'er be borne.
    Sons shall bring in lengthening line,
    Sacrifices to his shrine.
    Tao when nursed within one's self,
    His vigour will make true;
    And where the family it rules
    What riches will accrue!
    The neighbourhood where it prevails
    In thriving will abound;
    And when 'tis seen throughout the state,
    Good fortune will be found.
    Employ it the kingdom o'er,
    And men thrive all around.
    In this way the effect will be seen in the person, by the
    observation of different cases; in the family; in the neighbourhood;
    in the state; and in the kingdom.
    How do I know that this effect is sure to hold thus all under the
    sky? By this (method of observation).

      When the Tao prevails in the world, they send back their swift
      horses to (draw) the dung-carts. When the Tao is disregarded in the
      world, the war-horses breed in the border lands.
      There is no guilt greater than to sanction ambition; no calamity
      greater than to be discontented with one's lot; no fault greater than
      the wish to be getting. Therefore the sufficiency of contentment is
      an enduring and unchanging sufficiency.

      The skilful traveller leaves no traces of his wheels or
      footsteps; the skilful speaker says nothing that can be found fault
      with or blamed; the skilful reckoner uses no tallies; the skilful
      closer needs no bolts or bars, while to open what he has shut will be
      impossible; the skilful binder uses no strings or knots, while to
      unloose what he has bound will be impossible. In the same way the
      sage is always skilful at saving men, and so he does not cast away any
      man; he is always skilful at saving things, and so he does not cast
      away anything. This is called 'Hiding the light of his procedure.'
      Therefore the man of skill is a master (to be looked up to) by him
      who has not the skill; and he who has not the skill is the helper of
      (the reputation of) him who has the skill. If the one did not honour
      his master, and the other did not rejoice in his helper, an
      (observer), though intelligent, might greatly err about them. This is
      called 'The utmost degree of mystery.'
