This is honestly my favorite De Niro performance. He was so honest and forthcoming. You really believed in the craziness of his character and him as a superstitious father. I saw a ton of parallels between him and myself when it comes to myself or people I know. He really nailed it.
When Tiffany says "if it's me reading the signs" you see Pat's facial expression change as his hands shift to his pockets in remembrance of the letter.
Actually, I don't think he made the connection when she said it that time, but shortly after this, after Pat Sr. makes the parlay bet, Pat says he's not going through with the dance competition. He and Tiffany are yelling at each other and she says a couple more times "If it's me reading the signs," then he storms out onto the front porch alone. THAT'S the moment when the phrase hits him, and he re-reads the letter and makes the connection that it was actually written by Tiffany.
It was funny, love this scene! The sound of the bottle cap hitting the floor was pretty obviously added in post production by the foley artist. It kind of works, but was a little over the top- Tiffany was being assertive, real, and bold here, but wouldn't have been disrespectful.
De Niro's response was a two-fold answer: impressed with her knowledge and impressed with her acting skills. I have not seen her around these days. She was fantastic in this. This scene itself won her a much deserved Oscar and the direction was impeccable. Felt like we were in it!!
What I love about this scene is the subtext that when Pat told her earlier his father thought she was messing up the Eagles juju, it bothered her enough to do research on it. That's great writing. Show not tell.
@@electraking8856 You all apparently dont realize that a script is what dictates the outcome of the scene.... Absolutely magnificent performance. The ability to steal a scene loaded with phenomenal talent is impressive. But we should recognize the screenwriter as well. This films dialog is so intelligent, interesting & intense that it has a spot near the top of a very selective list.
If a woman made a speech like this to me, except about the Giants and the Yankees, I'd ask her to marry me right then and there. And knowing state nicknames? That's catnip to me.
I always refer back to this scene because of the editing. Sometimes you have shots that don’t coincide with the dialogue or vice versa but with great performances and smart editing, the audience won’t notice these types of mistakes (36 seconds in). Especially at the very end with the beer. You never see the beer at any moment in the scene. With great sound effects you establish the beer in her hands without having an establishing shot of it. Great job.
@N9neL7ves cinematography in this scene isn’t in question. I’m more talking about the editing and how even inconsistent shots can coincide together to form a great scene that isn’t distracting. It doesn’t take away in my opinion.
@N9neL7ves yeah I’m the same way when it comes to the technical side. “Bad Cinematography” wouldn’t be the appropriate thing to criticize. Choosing the different edits of cuts has nothing to do with how they shot the movie. Some shots work better emotionally than with other cuts. That’s how filmmaking works. Piecing it together and trying best to align them is the name of the game in terms of the editing process. It’s not that it isn’t distracting or is distracting, the editing stays emotionally intact because of their choices of when to move from one thing to another. You’re telling a story through the edit. And at times, like this one, you can hide and reveal many things through it.
I do love this scene, along with the final dance -- SUCH a good movie! Then again I am a bit of a 'hopeless romantic', so in that respect it's extremely difficult not to love this film.
Philly fan here to fact check this amazing performance... Starting at 0:56 - Oct. 12th, 2008: Eagles over 49ers: 40-26✅ - Oct. 13th, 2008: Phillies over Dodgers: 7-5✅ - Oct. 26th, 2008: Eagles over Falcons: 27-14✅ - Oct 26th, 2008: Phillies over Rays: 10-2✅ De Niro says "Have to think about that, wait a minute." But this is the kicker (no football pun intended)... The next game is a lie. The Philadelphia Eagles have NEVER beaten the Seattle Seahawks 14-7...EVER! In fact, Seattle Seahawks (currently as of May 2021) lead series 12-7-0 Points Scored: Seattle Seahawks 404, Philadelphia Eagles 331 Making an average points per-game: Seahawks 21 to an Eagles 17. This right here shows the magnitude of Tiffany's character and charisma. She had four proven moments to build her case. What she needed was Pat's dad to second guess himself and once he did, BOOM, the lie. Bravo! Game, set, and match.
Did anyone else notice at 0:35, you can hear that Pat is talking to his dad but when you see the side of his face in the shot, he's not speaking. Lol nice editing
As a football fan, I hear other people talk about how ridiculous those superstitions are, and I just remember how the ONLY time I didn’t do my own crazy superstitious rituals during the 2015 season was the only game in the regular season where The Panthers lost... 😓
Love this scene, but wish they got the Seahawks score right. She said 14-7 but the actual score was 27-14. Strangely enough, they refer to the Seahawks game earlier in the film and they got the partial score correct in that scene. They got all the other scores right and the dates of the games line up, aside from the fact the Falcons game and Game 4 of the World Series were played on the same day. Russell obviously cared about specificity because every other reference to that 2008 season was accurate, so there was no reason to make that kind of error unless maybe JLaw screwed up her read and the take was so good they just decided to stick with it... that, or the error was in the book and they stayed true to it...
"I gotta say I'm impressed." This scene is why Lawrence won the Oscar. She made Robert De Niro rethink the whole thing.
Yep in a way De Niro was saying he was impressed which means a lot for an actor of that stature and its certainly why she won the oscar.
😂😂😂
youuuu....youuuu
It's a script...
@@mileshamblen9982 😂👌🏼
He went from she's the problem to "SON....MARRY THAT WOMAN!"😂😂😂
😎😏😂🤣💁🤗🤗
I know right
I always appreciate when Robert is in a movie where he is not playing some kind of bad ass.
This is honestly my favorite De Niro performance. He was so honest and forthcoming. You really believed in the craziness of his character and him as a superstitious father. I saw a ton of parallels between him and myself when it comes to myself or people I know. He really nailed it.
Let me think about that, let me think about that.......
Melody Diaz he was really good in The Intern too.
It has mostly be like that since Jackie Brown, he became a comedy actor and sometimes a joke
"By the way, I'm Tiffany" lol!!!!
...cut to Pat's mom, who looks at her like, "OK, crazy lady..."
When Tiffany says "if it's me reading the signs" you see Pat's facial expression change as his hands shift to his pockets in remembrance of the letter.
Juno Callow nice catch
As many times as I watched this I never even noticed that

My favorite scene in the film. Anyone who can wholly dominate Mr. DeNiro deserves an Oscar. This is when I became a JLa fan.
lf1234 I
I agree.
lol that explains why joaquin phoenix won an oscar. he absolutely dominated de niro in the joker
Haha the way she just opens herself a beer after was the mic drop!

I like the collective “ooohs” from the guys in the background every time she lays a fact down😂👌
Mother in the background: "Oh Pat." Lol

“I Gotta Say I’m Impressed” Awsome Line
2:03 Mom says "Oh Pat" after the excelsior drop like he should've known better. Crazy vs crazy
The best part gets me every time
"she's right dad" lol
Annie Bowman who gave her the budwieser tho?🤣🤣

One of my favorite all time movie scenes. So fun and full of warmth and heart.
*This scene won JLaw her Oscar.*
BlueFox94 without a doubt!!!! Tiffany is one of the most badass characters in recent years and she played that role to perfection!!!!!
And simultaneously tanked a blossoming X-Men redemption as her value become overinflated.
@@chand911 you do know that she didnt write the lack luster scripts , right , nor did she direct .There is only so much an actor can do
Coincidently this popped in my feed after the Eagles won the Super Bowl after seeing Bradley Cooper at the game itself
Google knows all bro
Awesome scene! I wonder many takes that took! She went head to head with a legend!
+Deborah Fernandes This is where Jennifer Lawrence became a legend.

Yes! I say the same thing every time! She took on DeNiro and completely shut him down!

100% steals the scene...and not so easy do with DeNiro standing there!
Love the “I gotta say, I’m impressed” 😂

She really did do her research, speaking as a Philly suburb native. XD
Or maybe all bipolar people are genetically Philadelphians
seg162 maybe. don’t come close to us we might eat you.

Same thing.
I'd marry her for her booty
I'm glad that Bradley and Jennifer tried to get the Philly accent right. Philadelphians don't drop their "R's" the way New Yorkers do.
Bradley is a local.
Just watched this the other day for the first time and it became an all time favorite. Love it
Taking a sip of beer after that awesome monologue was BADASS !!!🤘😎🤘
This scene was so great. Everyone delivered in this movie.
Just realized that the Eagles winning the Superbowl probably means that they just had their first kid. Congrats to the lucky couple.
