De Niro is a very private person and doesn't do a lot of interviews, so for him to come on live TV in front of a studio audience and thousands of others watching at home and to show that type of emotion and be so moved by this film is a testament to his character and the film itself. Thanks for sharing

I have bipolar disorder in my family. So many do. What impacts you is that you relate to the victim - how much they depend on the right balance of medication, how ashamed and guilty they feel when they're not in control of their minds yet retain the intelligence to see themselves out-of-control yet unable to do anything about it.

+Immortan Joe you ask a very important question and while I can't speak for others, I am absolutely NOT offended, however be very careful because there are snake oil people who prey on vulnerable parents with promises of a cure. I can say that most times if someone is out there with new information of a so called cure: we are already aware of it 😀 and depending how far we are in our journey, we either are looking into it or have determined it is a crock of shit. As far as the question would I cure my son's autism if I could: absolutely , 100 percent. And before someone comes on here accusing me of not loving and accepting my son as he is ( not you kind sir , there are many self righteous special need parents and high functioning autistic individuals who Vilify parents if they say they don't see autism as a blessing ) my words to them are. "If you are able to type on a computer and articulate your thoughts to be able to judge me then you are talking about TWO totally ( cont )

+Immortan Joe different kinds of autism . Autism has taken my son's voice, his ability to make friends, his ability to read , write, be unsupervised , live independently , have children , hold down a job etc etc. He is 22 and a wonderful boy but I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to give him a cure. The only thing that is offensive is someone trying to tell us parents we don't love our children as they are if we would cure them that is bullshit and I will defend my decision to my dying day . Which brings up the terror of who will care for him when I'm gone. So my answer is yes yes yes!!! And if anyone wants to judge me : bring it on because I am sick and tired of defending myself. If a child was born with cancer would they say well curing him would not be accepting him as he is? Of course not. It's the same thing with severe autism . I hope I was able to answer your question and thank you for giving me a chance to explain my view point. 😀

I don’t think Meet the Parents is “lesser known” if anything younger people, I think, know De Niro for those films than anything. Tho I will say Awakenings, Ronin and The Score are probably some of his most underrated performances ever. But IMO, Taxi Driver, Heat, Raging Bull, Awakenings, Deer Hunter and Silver Linings Playbook are De Niro’s greatest performances because they felt like he was portraying a real/honest character and not playing a caricature of himself.

Obviously, he and I have a very different view on Donald Trump. Then, I watch this video... 9 years after it is posted... and as much as I am still frustrated that he and I can't see the same way on certain things, I tear up watching this because I know that he is just another human being like me who can and does care deeply for others when they are hurting or have problems... and my frustration with him just disappears. :) Hopefully the same could be said about me. But that's not why I respect him .
It's who he is as a human being.
Once deniro went to Graham Norton show and was talking about leo DiCaprio. Graham Norton said that because of Deniro's praise for di caprio in
"a boy's life" his career has seen a rise , but other kids(whom deniro didn't praise) , who knows where they are now . Everyone laughed , DENIRO DIDNT . You can search for it on RUclips . It's who Deniro is as a human being , that makes me respect him. HE IS IRREPLACEABLE. 😊

What's crass about what I said? Watch the video again: when she's handing De Niro a tissue, Cooper is covering his face to try and hide it, but you can clearly see him smiling.
It's obviously awkward and uncomfortable for him, and many people react in those kinds of situations by giggling nervously. (Plus there's the fact that Robert De Niro - one of the most notoriously stoic and taciturn actors alive - just started crying in an interview. It must've felt very bizarre.) I'm not judging him.

+ubernaffa I won't be able to get away with only one night, I've just booked nightmares for a month, at least! Daym, this looks freaky... She was never a beauty, but she's a hell of a beast!
And she keeps talking! For fuck's sake, lady, try to pretend that you have a heart and a soul...

I've watched it more than once and never noticed him smiling. Did you ever think that Cooper was trying to hide his own emotion at the time? And even if he did laugh, as you pointed out...some react with laughter when faced with heavy emotion. And if that was the case, it is crass to point that out.

my guess: De Niro had previously neglected the mental illness of someone in his own life. It's not uncommon unfortunately; it seems like guilt coming through, and a cathartic moment of embracing the conversation, both there on the couch, and with the movie in general.

I agree with you on one level, my father does use bipolar as an excuse to be an arsehole but A LOT of people do have it and can't help their actions for the most part.
