To PL Travers, Mary Poppins wasn't the point of the books and shouldn't have been the point of the film. For her, the point was all about Mr. Banks (representing her father), and despite how this movie portrays the ending, PL Travers went to her grave disappointed with Walt Disney and what he had done to her story about her relationship with her father. Walt Disney was so worried about her reaction to the movie, he didn't invite her to the premiere.

A small note re depiction of costumes in Australia circa 1906 that so perturbed. I've ancestry with and great fondness for the country, but it was a somewhat behind, separated culture then. And in the Bush! Subtleties of what angle a lady should wear a hat would have escaped many, I'm sure. In fact the wardrobe adviser probably suggested she do it so. I hope that helps!

I think the point of the hat being on wrong is to symbolise how everything is about to be turned upside down. As you pointed out, another woman has the hat on correctly.

You know, the way you feel about the hats in this movie is probably the same way my brother felt about Walt not smoking in the movie. My brother and I don't like Disney's need to make Walt seem perfect. He was a human being, and he had flaws. (I actually feel the same way about the Catholic Church and Jesus.)

Maybe it's because of the way how Julie Andrews sings the song that It makes you get emotional when you hear it. That's like one of the greatest songs that disney has ever created or will ever create.

But the scene when Walt is telling his story and he talks about forgiveness and he tells her "life is a harsh sentence to lay down for yourself."
That line always pushes me to tears

Long before I saw this, I knew Travers wasn't a fan of the movie; if you look at the history of movie adaptions of works by still-living authors, you'll find a lot of that.
The makers of this movie originally hoped to do so independent of the Walt Disney Company; they quickly discovered that wasn't possible.

There have been a few exceptions. The author of 101 Dalmatians enjoyed the movie and Gary K. Wolf, the author of Who Censored Roger Rabbit preferred the film version to his own novel. But it is definitely quite rare.

As a person interested in the medieval period, I have long learned to look past odd choices in costuming, sometimes due to budget, sometimes to off-kilter research. If, to me, the story is strong enough, then I can look past the faux pas. I was able to do this for this particular movie, because, for me, the relationship with the child's father, and how what happened to him created the woman she became, was strong enough and moving enough to look past the inaccuracies: there was truth in the root of what they were doing, and it led up to the payoff of Tom Hanks' wonderful monologue about his own father and the reassurance that Mary Poppins is about saving the father: something that this rendition of PL Travers may not have consciously been aware of. For me, you cannot have this movie without the flashbacks - it's only half the story, and with most of its heart missing. I'm sorry you were so affected negatively by the costuming. I understand it, but hope that, if you do a re-watch, you can look past it and live with the child that PL Travers is born from.

Well said indeed ma'am. I think this movie tries to be even-handed about where both Disney and Travers were coming from and the influence of their formative years. As obnoxious as Travers could be, she is ultimately a sympathetic character.

Okay so a couple of things I wanted to point out is that is:
-Emma Thompson as P.L Travers not Julie Andrews,
-Walt got the rights to make the film after going to meet her in person in England in the late 50’s Early 60’s and she signed the rights over before she went to be a consultant on the film.
-the one Sherman Brothers song she did like that won her over wasn’t Let’s Go Fly a Kite it was actually Feed the Birds,

At first I thought yay, another charming Alexa reaction to a delightful movie. It was Emma Thompson's self-described favourite role and another notch in Tom Hanks' bow, as if he needed one, as the first to portray Walt on the big screen. Colin Farrell's engaging performance as Pam's whimsical but alcoholic father was key to the complex, talented, bitterly disappointed woman who thought she had reinvented herself as an adult, but had done so by repressing the child within. It hits close to home in my own family so I found some of those childhood scenes almost unbearable. I understand she wanted to protect her precious creation from what later became recognised as "Disneyfication' . But Travers' books had been enormously successful for decades. I definitely would not like to have known the domineering, superior, schoolma'amish harridan she became and if I'd been one of the Sherman brothers there would have been blood on the floor, ha ha.
As for the costuming, give them a break. This is colonial Queensland, a long way from Hyde Park and Savile Row. They probably wore their hats like that to keep the flies off.

    • @alexachipman
      @alexachipman  2 года назад +2

It wasn't just the hats in the costuming. I can go on for hours about the fabric choices, cut of the skirts, don't get me started on the male costumes either. Sorry! It was just so poorly done, and made worse by the fact it was juxtaposed with Emma's outstanding performance. It was like watching an Oscar winning film and a terrible B movie at the same time.

    An interesting story.
It’s always fascinating to see the origins of iconic cultural phenomena.
    In that vein,
I’d also recommend these two films.
    “Goodbye Christopher Robin” (2017)
It’s about the author of Winnie the Pooh, his son the real life Christopher Robin, and the PTSD Milne struggled with.
Fascinated story and a wonderful film.
    And I’ll also recommend
    “The Whole Wide World” (1996)
    About Robert E Howard.
The author who created Conan the Barbarian.
    He was a fascinating man.
I’d recommend doing zero research and watching this completely blind.
Don’t look up anything about Robert E Howard, just watch this film!
