I was somewhere between 4 and 7 years old when I saw it (I think it was a re-release) I remember I was crying so loud when E.T is laying in the river that my dad got me out of the theater. Which annoyed me cause even if I was sad I wanted to know what happens next. Anyways, I saw the rest of the movie a few years later.
I saw this when in theaters. I was ten. Children younger than me were running out of the theater before it ended sobbing. It was quite a spectacle. It was and still is EPIC.
I find it so heartwarming that Drew Barrymore thought ET was alive. "We found Drew over there just talking away to E.T. and so we let director Steven Spielberg know," said actress Dee Wallace. "And so Steven, from that time on, appointed two guys to keep E.T. alive so whenever Drew came over to talk to him, he could react to her." Keeping the magic alive! I think Drew Barrymore had a great child performance 2 years later as a lead in the Stephen King adaptation of Firestarter (1984).
Spielberg said that little Drew Barrymore was convinced E.T. was real on the set. So her emotions interacting with him were genuine. This movie takes you on a journey of emotions like you said. It was very entertaining watching the two of you react to this for the first time. It won’t be the last time you see it I guarantee. It’s one of those iconic movies you watch again and again.
This year E.T. will be 42 years old. I can't believe it's already been almost two years since I saw E.T. on the big screen for its 40th anniversary and before that I saw E.T. in 2017 for its 35th anniversary. I'll be watching this again in 2027 and/or 2032 for its 45th and 50th anniversaries, respectively.
@@maplenutsreact Also, Space Balls, the Mel Brooks sci-fi space spoof isn't scary, but so many of the jokes in it depend on having seen previous movies like Star Wars, Alien, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, etc. that you wouldn't get many of the inside jokes. The Fifth Element, on the other hand, has Chris Tucker as you've never seen him.
"Not as scary as Alien" has big "damning with faint praise" energy. While you're at it, tell them the dialog isn't as stilted as Attack of the Clones and the special effects aren't as pointlessly over-the-top as Shaolin Soccer.
ET is actually a film about divorce. Spielberg's own parents divorced when he was young, and he put a lot of personal experiences into the film. He also has always been interested in UFOs and Aliens. So there are a lot of personal touches to the film, which is why his films, especially early films stand out so much. Even a film he only helped with the screenplay, such as Poltergeist, has personal moments sprinkled within it. Which ET was filmed the same time Poltergeist was, and both films are 1982 releases. 1982 is probably the most insane years for film. Tons and tons of highly acclaimed and popular films released then. If you made a list of films to see, solely based around a 1982 release, you would react to some of the most popular films in cinema.
Fun Fact: Those were real doctors and were unscripted. Steven Spielberg asked them to just do whatever they would do in that situation. Such a powerful scene!
I recommend two videos that can be found on youtube. First, Henry Thomas' audition tape for Elliot. Second, the 4 minute (NOT the 2 minute one that edited down) short film. E.T. Returns.
ET is not the only movie with a nice alien. Off the top of my head, you have flight of the navigator, Starman, the Day, the Earth stood still, the original, and the remake. autobots from transformers, Terranova, cocoon, the abyss, this is just some off the top of my head. If you actually spent some time and looked into it, you’d probably find many more.
In some sense, E.T. is kind of a sequel to Close Encounters. That's what Spielberg was thinking on the set of Close Encounters as they were wrapping up production.
I have a buddy who finally saw it for the first time at my place (we're in our 30s), and... idk, didn't get it I guess. Said people only like it because of nostalgia... infuriating.
Theres a reason why ET went for Yoda at Halloween- His species can be seen on Coruscant in the republic representitive coloseum briefly in Star Wars Phantom Menace...so he recognised Yoda LOL
Elliot is supposed to be 10. I dissected frogs and other things in 6th grade which would have made me 11 I think. Ours were already dead though, in formaldehyde.
I love that subtle little ET moment during the goodbye where he gets down to Drew’s size to not seem intimidating towards her and then back up to the older brother’s height because he’s taller. The sweetest alien of all time 🫶🏻
Back in '82/83 I was scared, as a 5 year old. Refused to watch it for the rest of my childhood. Another TV screening in 1988 - I fled upstairs, because I couldn't take it. Such was the power of this. Not because I was scared, just the emotional horror. I can watch it now, as a 45 year old, with the Blu-ray - and the emotional horror is still there. John William's score is utterly amazing.
12:08 I can’t believe you said this-my friend and I had an entire debate about what ET probably smells like. Our settled opinion is he’s probably somewhere between a wet dog and wet dirt. Greta reaction btw, thank you!
The show "Legends of Tomorrow" did a pretty cool episode that was sort of an adaptation of ET. There are so many ET Easter eggs in it, down to an appearance by the jungle jim dome.
That manner of dissecting a frog was actually common at one time for 6th through 12th graders. The chloroform does not kill the frog, so its heart is still beating during the dissection. (The cruelty of which is probably why it was discontinued.) By the time I got to dissect a frog, I was in 10th grade and the frogs were dead and preserved in formaldehyde. My sister's class dissected small pigs.
I was amazed to realize when I first saw this movie, years after it was released, that it was every bit as good as I'd heard (and didn't believe) it was.
He points to Elliot's head to say he'll be in his memory "I'll be right here." I like that he didn't point to his chest, it's more poignant and real the way they did it. The movie's sentimental but in a smart way. It deals with divorce, and loss and growing up. I often think that Spielberg forces sentimentality in his movies where it's not needed, but because E.T. is about childhood innocence it makes sense.
Peter Coyote, who plays the main scientist, actually auditioned for Indiana Jones during the making of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, but he was so nervous, he literally broke a lamp just walking into the room. Spielberg said if RAIDERS had been a comedy, Coyote would've easily gotten the role. When he was casting ET, Spielberg was inspired by Coyote's failed INDY audition and brought him in to play the role to make the character less threatening.
I probably saw E.T. on VHS at some point when I was a kid, but I actually don't remember when I saw it. I was born in late 1986 so I definitely didn't see it in theatres, and we never owned it on DVD, so it must've been on VHS in the early to mid '90s when I saw it. So, Chandra, does that mean you haven't seen any of the Star Wars movies because there are lots of aliens in that franchise? Great video.
I understand why Chandra would have been afraid of aliens and too spooked to watch this movie when she was younger. After Alien (1979) there was plenty of justification for one's trepidations about alien movies. I saw this movie with my mom when I was a teenager, originally thinking that my girlfriend wouldn't be interested in a movie about an alien. Two weeks later I took my girlfriend to see it. She cried her eyes out when E.T. "died", then punched me in the arm afterward for not telling her that he wasn't really dead.
9:19 "Did he just make those noises with his mouth?" - 😄I can see how that's impressive today, but GameBoy wasn't out just yet. So, most of us could make those sounds because we would play with our action figures very often. 😆😎
One of the first movies I can remember watching. I mean at that age I was just like "alien funny" and now watching it as an adult you get all the feels moments like a ton of bricks. I appreciate your reaction a lot! From another Canadian Jordan, I'll be back here!
There was oddly... A sequel idea floating around way back in the 80s.Well,the sequel had evil aliens coming to Earth, and ET comes back to help humans and Elliot fight the evil aliens.
Tbh E.T. traumatized me as a kid but when I rewatched this movie hundreds of times in middle school I lost my fear of E.T. and it became my favorite movie of all time.
That's a great movie albeit it still creeps me out towards the end seeing the aliens standing there in the house in the reflection of the television. It gives me the chills.
Other films with friendly aliens include Cocoon, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Flight of the Navigator. There are also some movies with both friendly aliens and hostile aliens: Galaxy Quest springs immediately to mind, and of course the entire Star Trek and Star Wars franchises.
One of my favorite films of all time. And THANK YOU FOR NOT MAKING A SEQUEL. But I'm a little disappointed you two DIDN'T cry. What's wrong with you? Hehehe. At the time of the movie's release, this movie was a phenomenan in it's own right. The killer is that it was really a kid's movie, but it was the ADULTS who really reacted to it. One of my all time favorite films.
This film actually led to a fight between makeup artist Rick Baker and Spielberg. At the time, Baker was working on the aliens for NIGHT SKIES (Spielberg's alien horror film) and John Landis' wolf effects for AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON at the same time. When Spielberg changed directions to make E.T., Baker said it was not possible to literally design and execute new aliens for E.T, so fast. The two argued so heatedly that once their meeting was over, Baker told his entire team to exit the building and bring all their work (convinced Spielberg would throw everything out). Spielberg replaced Baker on ET with Carlos Corodini (who had done the alien creatures for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS), and Baker ended up winning the first Oscar for Best Makeup. A few years later, director William Dear wanted Baker to create his Bigfoot character for HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS, but because the movie was being produced by Spielberg, Baker was convinced Spielberg would veto him. However, Spielberg agreed Baker was the best man for the job, and the two reconciled their issues. Baker would win his second Oscar for HARRY and worked on other Spielberg projects including GREMLINS 2 and the MEN IN BLACK films.
You're right about most extra-terrestrials being portrayed as horror devices this was preceded by Splieberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) which are the only two others off the top of my head that put ET's in a positive light.
Sci-Fi movies with kind and/or well-meaning aliens: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977), the original The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), Galaxy Quest (well, mostly) (1999)
Thank you for this. One of my favorite movies. Was Elliot's age when I first saw it. You guys make a good team and have nice chemistry. And you're both so understated, you don't get in the way of the movie, but still express your reactions.
Another GREAT Steven Spielberg “Alien” movie is “Close Encounters of the Third Kind “ - being afraid of alien movies I assume you never watched it, but I highly recommend it. Late 1970’s but mind blowing effects!
The actor that plays Elloitt plays young Norman Bates in Psycho 4. Fun Fact about this movie the girl Elloitt kissed is Baywatch hottie Erika Eleniak. Talk about one hell of a first kiss
26:18 What you two said right there reminded me of 2014 true story when 16 year old Justin Casquejo, sneaked in the under construction World Trade Center in Manhattan. It was just 13 years after 9/11, the site was supposed to be under the highest level of security.
Is that a cornfield ?, nope, looks like it though to give the back of that house a creepy feel. , this Neighborhood is supposedly in Southern California.
Back in the 80s, pizza was still mostly being made by Italian Americans in little family restaurants. And it was good. I never knew there was such a thing as substandard pizza until post-college. Believe it or not, some of the best pizza still around is in New Jersey. You have to know where to go, but you can still find the real deal.
First. Nice reaction. Chandra - don't watch 'The Thing' (later release)... and a bunch of other films!! This is my reaction to 'new' youtubers... My take. There are dozens of films each year from 1940 to today that are 'good'. Don't let the fact that films are black and white prevent you from watching. Don't know what you like but a few of my early favorites are... 1951 Day the Earth Stood Still, 1956 Forbidden Planet, 1968 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, 1968 Lion in Winter. I could go on and on. Wishing you the best in you adventure discovering movie gems of the past. Take Care.
You're so kind! Thank you so much for your recommendations ❤ I've actually always wanted to see Day the Earth Stood Still! I love reading sci-fi and I'm pretty sure that's a classic sci-fi story that a lot of stories now are inspired by!
E.T. is a great movie and holds a very special place in my heart. And so I was dismayed listening to some of Jordan’s jokes/comments throughout this reaction. Did not find them funny and thought they were more annoying than anything else. Please do better.
Man, your 80's pizza reference, and ESPECIALLY PIZZA PIZZA, is so hard core. From Toronto here. There is no pizza in my neighbourhood that rocks other than Pizzaolio, and that costs a mint for all the toppings and deep dish I want. $51.00 for a large. I remember a place on Queen Street that gave you unlimited toppings and deep dish for 19.99. That was in 2003. Twenty years ago, granted, but shit! How can they not make that work now? I'm convinced they're just not trying enough. Why the hell am I focusing on the pizza, when you're doing a movie reaction? Focus, Sean! Focus on Chandra's epic eye-rolls and expressions, and Jordan's explicit, laser-focused critique. Gosh, it's like your first time at this, you tyro.
Great Reaction! A fabulous movie about Aliens is ARRIVAL with Amy Adams. Written and directed by Denis Villeneuve who also did Dune and Bladerunner 2049. You won't be disappointed.
Originally, the candies were supposed to be M&Ms.... ( E.T. thought they were some sort of energy pills . ) and that's when Reece's Pieces decided to step in and fill their shoes.and that's when Reece's Pieces really started going a lot of traction in the market....
The race of "E.T." is from the Star Wars Galaxy as seen in The Phantom Menace. E.T. recognizes Yoda on Earth and tries to run to him. How is it possible that there are pop culture Star Wars toys and costumes on Earth? The answer is simple, George Lucas is unknowingly a strong Force Sensitive and through the Force has had visions of the Star Wars Galaxy that he interpreted as inspiration and wrote it all down, including Jar Jar Binx.
While they talked about doing a sequel, they have constantly decided against it. However in 2019, they did a really nice commercial that almost filled in nicely as a sequel 40 years later. ruclips.net/video/gptokzlnb5Q/видео.html
Hard to tell, but it looks like you watched the re-mastered version, where Spielberg decided to digitally alter the guns carried by the government agents during the chase scene into radios.
@@maplenutsreact It was called NIGHT SKIES; basically "Aliens invading a farm". While Spielberg intended to direct it, he got distressed over doing horror during the filming of RAIDERS. He did still connect with parts of the film where an autistic boy befriends one of the nicer aliens and asked the late Melissa Matheson (then Harrison Ford's girlfriend) to do a new take on it (which became E.T.). NIGHT SKIES basically became POLTERGEIST when Spielberg asked Tobe Hooper to direct and Hooper wasn't interested in doing films about aliens, so it was overall changed to ghosts.
It is fascinating how much fear there seem to be in some people. Almost every movie reactor seems to have a "large" amount of fear of things, both real and fictious characters. I am curious why that is. Has to do with the environment maybe? I never saw that level of fear in anyone around me, and i grew up with movies in the 80s and 90s. Hope the reaction thing helps a bit with making things less scary. :)
Maybe dim the lights next time, it’s so bright in that room! These movies are supposed to be watched in a darker space (and in a bigger screen) to really appreciate them.

I saw this at 10. I rode my bike to the theater. After I thought I could fly
Tbh E.T. traumatized me as a kid but when I rewatched this movie hundreds of times in middle school I lost my fear of E.T. and it became my favorite movie of all time.
I challenge you to watch "Signs"
That's a great movie albeit it still creeps me out towards the end seeing the aliens standing there in the house in the reflection of the television. It gives me the chills.
Other films with friendly aliens include Cocoon, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Flight of the Navigator. There are also some movies with both friendly aliens and hostile aliens: Galaxy Quest springs immediately to mind, and of course the entire Star Trek and Star Wars franchises.
When I was really small and watched this, I had no idea what Mexico was. I thought it sounded like a delicious treat.
I'm not crying, you're crying
Damn you Spielberg!
When I was in kindergarten, I remember eating Play-Doh as well. lol
Holy! I had no idea there was so much going on behind the scenes!
You're right about most extra-terrestrials being portrayed as horror devices this was preceded by Splieberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) which are the only two others off the top of my head that put ET's in a positive light.
the girl reactor is so pretty
There is a Christmas reunion featuring an adult Elliot (with original actor)on an Xfinity commercial. It is available to view on RUclips.
Loved this movie when I was little! It was the scientists that scared me.
What has three balls and comes from outer space? E.T., The Extra Testicle!
When I was 7 years old in 1987, they had us dissect cow eyeballs.
7 years old!? That's so young!
Sci-Fi movies with kind and/or well-meaning aliens: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977), the original The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), Galaxy Quest (well, mostly) (1999)
Hey, I appreciate you taking time away from your motorcycle cop duties to react to some of our favorite movies. Been great fun so far.
Hahaha omg
That moustache 😂😂😂
How can anyone take him seriously?!
There was an "epilogue" to this story in the form of an Christmas commercial: ruclips.net/video/52roM4-5GWs/видео.html
Oooooh! I want to watch this right now!! But I'm going to wait for Jordan haha
I did go on the ET ride at Universal Studios Florida. It was fun.
Thank you for this. One of my favorite movies. Was Elliot's age when I first saw it.
You guys make a good team and have nice chemistry. And you're both so understated, you don't get in the way of the movie, but still express your reactions.
Awww thank you so much!! ❤
The bike scene is one of my favorites
Another GREAT Steven Spielberg “Alien” movie is “Close Encounters of the Third Kind “ - being afraid of alien movies I assume you never watched it, but I highly recommend it. Late 1970’s but mind blowing effects!
There was a puppet ET, and animatronic ET, and an actual little person in a suit ET for different scenes.
First movie I ever saw in the theater, I was 5.
The actor that plays Elloitt plays young Norman Bates in Psycho 4. Fun Fact about this movie the girl Elloitt kissed is Baywatch hottie Erika Eleniak. Talk about one hell of a first kiss
9:49 Fun Fact: His cute eyes were modelled after Albert Einstein's eyes.
Oh wild! I never would have guessed that haha
I've never thought about what E.T. smells like, but I feel like he would smell kind of earthly, like mud and grass after it rains.
👍
yeah i love the look of the pizza in this movie and in the original tmnt movie.
They're botanist aliens. and btw thanks for reacting to my favorite movie of all time.
Please watch the movie ARIVAL it is so good.
E.T. is a great movie and holds a very special place in my heart. And so I was dismayed listening to some of Jordan’s jokes/comments throughout this reaction. Did not find them funny and thought they were more annoying than anything else. Please do better.
Nice review...and at19:56 ...real Annabelle doll...
reeses pieces were launched in conjunction with the movie.
Hello fellow Canadian! Hahaha I very much enjoyed your pizza talk ❤ And your observations of us! Epic eye-rolls and expressions... You flatter me sir!
I can totally see why. Such good marketing to have your candy in a movie like this!
I heard it was changed due to mars the maker of m&ms didnt want their candy associated with what they thought was a ugly creature.
He's from the green planet.
While they talked about doing a sequel, they have constantly decided against it. However in 2019, they did a really nice commercial that almost filled in nicely as a sequel 40 years later.

Hard to tell, but it looks like you watched the re-mastered version, where Spielberg decided to digitally alter the guns carried by the government agents during the chase scene into radios.
Did you guys know this was almost a horror alien movie?
Haha no way! I'm so glad they didn't make it a horror... I would have had a very different experience!
E.T. The nice Jedi.
Lol you can totally eat playdo, it says non toxic in big bold print on the package for just that reason i suspect, lol
