I recommend you read "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in His Adventure on Earth" (Book #1 in the E.T. Series) by William Kotzwinkle. In the book, we can read ET's thoughts, and he's not so chldlike, but more like an intelligent being with curious mind and a weakness for Resse's Pieces.

It was also shown on NBC without commercial interruption and without anything edited out, including profanity. It was a very unusual move. Even when it was re-released with the 2002 special edition, people exaggerated the changes made for the 20th anniversary without even seeing it. None of the lines by the kids were removed. Guns were replaced with walkie-talkies, some digital enhancements were made to E.T.'s face, and deleted scenes were included. That's it. Both versions of the movie were released in the first DVD release fall of 2002.
I wws looking up trivia for this movie and the doctors and nurses were real who worked at the medical center at usc and their dialog was also genuine to make it seem real they were also ttold to work on et as if he was a real patient

Spielberg made a number of anti-adult movies in this time. All the kids know better than the adults in these. It's such a shame as it's an appalling message.
ET is overrated. A better kid adventure movie you should see is Flight Of The Navigator 1986. Fyi you know Spielberg wanted to make an ET 2 movies where the ETs are evil.
Well, I found it boring, sappy, and predictable----though I didn’t see it until I was in my jaded 40s, and this film is kiddie fare. Even the great John Williams' soundtrack was cloying. Spielberg had this awesome 10-year run of masterpieces----“Duel,” “Jaws,” “Close Encounters,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (“1941” wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was fun for what it was trying to do-make WWII wacky), then after “Ark,” he leaned into the kiddie realm, directing and/or producing “ET,” “Poltergeist,” “Goonies,” and other fluff, even adding a kid to the “Raiders” sequel. I recall a cranky film reviewer back then, reviewing either “Temple of Doom” or a “Jurassic Park” sequel, who sniped, “Why does there always have to be a kid?” in his films? Why, indeed.
Spielberg sure knows how to make movies that touch your soul and imagination. Such an iconic director.

The moment when Mike finds ET in the creek and ET is all sickly white, was such an shocking moment for 10 year old me when we saw this in the theater.
For me, the saddest and most terrible moment of this film is when Michael wakes up and sees the flowers dying.

This was my mom's favorite movie. She passed away in 2011. I think about her especially when my wife and I watch it. It is a true classic!
