Welcome to Wreckedville, population many of those who have watched this most excellent movie. First, I have to defend Annie's brother Mark, which is difficult because I think of actor Timothy Busfield as a villain actor. Mark, and the rest of Annie's family, have lost the ability to dream. Real life and real work have led them to discard "foolish" hoping and dreaming, so ito them the field is just empty acreage being wasted. And Mark really spends much of the movie trying to be a good brother, from his dreamless perspective. He could just shrug and let his partners foreclose if he was a villain, but he spends a lot of time trying to convince them to sell rather than lose everything, and he doesn't sound angry about it, he sounds almost desperate. Then, at the end, where Ray grabs for Karin and causes her to fall, all Mark can do is hope, just as desperately, that she's okay. And in that hope suddenly he can see what he couldn't before. And immediately he is all for them keeping the farm. No other option. Not a thought of "My partners and I could make millions off of this!" just a "You gotta keep the farm, Ray." This movie hits in the feels throughout life. As a young man (I turned 21 the year this came out) it was somewhat emotional for me. Watched again in my late twenties it hit a bit harder, mainly because my maternal grandfather had died. Granddaddy T was born the same year as Ray's dad, 1897, and he had played town baseball after high school like young Archie described: the team found him a job during the day and he got to play baseball in the evenings and on weekends. Thinking that Archie was somewhat like my grandfather made it even more poignant. It hits me harder now, having lost my father a couple of years ago. I still will come across ideas or information and think "I've got to tell dad that!" and then feel bad because I can't. 😕 Also, I have a glove like the one Shoeless Joe uses. It was the glove my other grandfather used as a teen. I loved the stories told about Doc Graham in the tavern, and even more so when I found out that the three men who told the stories were the actual friends of the real life Archibald Graham telling actual stories of his life. No wonder they looked so invested in the stories they told! I also love something I didn't notice the first few times I watched. As Terry prepares to enter the corn to start research for his greatest story ever, he is laughing. If one listens, the pitch of his laughter goes up to a higher register as he begins to vanish into the corn, giving him the laugh of his younger self who dreamed of playing with Jackie Robinson at Ebbets Field when he grew up. 🙂 There are so many great and very slight tech tricks like that in this movie, from lighting to sound to even set dressing and costuming, that keep the suspension of disbelief going. Dwier Brown, who played Ray's dad John Kinsella, wrote a book called "If you build it..." which is filled with touching stories that fans have told him about their fathers, as well as ruminations on the relationship he had with his father and how he changed it after appearing in this movie. There's more to it as well, but I recommend it and suggest that having tissues nearby might be handy when reading it too.

Alexander is frustrated when they rejoice that "Commander Taggert has saved us" because Captain Taggert is not his character, Dr. Lazarus. It's Jason (Tim Allen). In other words, Dr. Lazarus will never get the credit, it will always go to the Commander. That's why he reacts that way and says "It's just not fair".

Please remember, the only updated effects are the terrible ones. The bad, very out of place CGI. All other effects were great on release and a big part of its success! From not even a Star Wars fan; but I've seen this confusion time and again. Okay some of the cities were built out to look more dense too I think. Hopefully you get to see the original Jabba later in the series :) Pixels weren't even a thing when this was filmed. I mean they were but movies were filmed on analogue (actual) film.

I loved watching your reaction to this movie. It came out when I was 10, and I first saw it when I was about 12. I thought everything about it was so cool, and I even wanted to move to Connecticut when I was younger because of the environment.

Interesting fact about this scene in the swamps of sadness. One horse they used actually drowned from the lift malfunctioning not to mention Noah Hathaway about did too.

And WOW almost 3 years later we went crazy once again with Eye Of The Tiger 🐯 from surviver! Hulk Hogan was fired from wwe because of his movie environment of Rocky 3 believe it or not!!!
