    For those of us with problematic childhoods, who loved the fathers and parents who failed us, this is a really difficult watch. I love this movie so much, especially Emma Thompson and her wonderful wonderful dialogue. I appreciate Mary Poppins so much more after understanding the perspective.

    As you've seen for yourself, Helen Goff was an extremely complex and deeply troubled woman. No matter what you think of her you have to respect her for fighting to protect Mary Poppins from becoming overly Disneyfied.

    The ending was bittersweet. One side shows to Travers that she shouldn't let her own past dictate her present life, while the other was that even bitter towards the final product, her work was distinguishable and well-beloved to many audiences out there. And Uncle Walt helped make it possible.
    As Walt once said, "We don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward."
    The end credits sure acknowledged Diane Disney with dignity. Walt's Daughter deserves high praise.

    As a writer/theatre major, this is one of my favorite movies. It shows all the complexities of the creative process, that art doesn't just drop out of the sky; it comes from people who each all have their own backstories (that's why I personally think the "death of the author" movement is lazy philosophy, just people wanting to make films/books/plays, etc. blank slates so they can project their own wants onto them). And, while I grew up with "Mary Poppins", the revelation that "She doesn't come to save the children; she comes to save their father," has given that film such a profound meaning, one I totally missed as a child.

    • @erikagholston6610

      I totally missed that as a child to. At the time my only perspective was that of a child. Now I’m a parent & I see the story through different eyes. I wish the mother was stronger, but that was a different time.

    Regarding what happened to her mother: that actually is pretty accurate to what happened. The only difference is Travers wasn't there to stop her.
    She did go out to the water, almost drowned, survived, and wasn't the same afterwards, but Travers didn't save her.

    “That’s what we storytellers do; we restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again…”
    One of my favourite films and scenes; the film perfectly summarises the power of storytelling in film/tv/theatre/books/music/art. Every story is more than entertainment, some can change our lives and some are about how a real person/people’s lives were changed.
    I love that you connected to it and see it as “one of the best scenes” you’ve seen in any film and it’s the same for me: it perfectly explains why myself and you and many others come back to films again and again.
    There is so much power in creating happiness and hope with telling a story.
    Life is so challenging and can be tough and brutal, but every story can show us our way out of the darkness and toward the light.
    Great reaction!

    • @AliciaNyblade
      @AliciaNyblade 2 года назад +3

      Writer/theatre major here and I absolutely agree. It's why I so often take issue with the "death of the author" approach to fiction: It tries to severe the creator(s)' personal pasts and artistic visions just to the audience can take the stories as blank slates to project THEIR interpretations onto it. Like, no. Art doesn't just drop out of the sky; every piece is created as it is for a reason. Different interpretations are great, but not at the expense of what the artist's own is and/or who they are as people.
      "Saving Mr. Banks" beautifully shows all aspects of the creative process and illustrates that both Travers and Disney, at the end of the day, were two very different people trying to tell different takes on a story. Yet they were also able to find common ground (at least in the film) and recognize the main theme: Mary Poppins appeared in the Banks' life not to save the children, but their father.

    Walt wasn’t an alcoholic as far as I know. He was, however, a frequent smoker. So much so that many pictures of him had to be airbrushed to hide the cigarette he was holding, which is why many images of him show him “pointing with two fingers.” Cast members in the parks always pint with two fingers to keep up the facade.

      As a former Cast Member at Disneyland for 6 years, I can say that's not the reason we pointed with two fingers. We got a lot of international visitors, and in some cultures it is considered rude to point with one finger, in other cultures it might even be an indecent hand gesture. So we were taught to either point with two fingers, or an open hand. We had this information taught to us at Disney University. And I taught it to other Cast Members when I was selected to teach at Disney University.

Travers' PoV on the entire matter and then you're supposed to decide who to side with,but no,in the end they make it look like she agreed with Walt *which is false!* So I see it as the final UNNECESSAREY bit of disrespect from Disney(not Walt,but the company)towards her! Released in 1964, Mary Poppins went on to become the most successful Disney film of the decade. Disney himself had his left lung removed shortly after its release, and died from complications due to lung cancer in December 1966, aged 65.... He was a chain smoker and in this film when you see the actor "pointing" with two fingers instead of one it was to show how Disney would point with a cigarette in his hand.......Also when you see the blood that her father spit up one can assume he died from lung cancer as well....

    Poor sweet Nick. I knew this was going to tear you up. It is so incredibly painful. No child should have to live through what Mrs. Travers did. Her beloved father an alcoholic, and her mother nearly committing suicide because she could not bear the thought of dealing with the drunkenness any longer. And how Walt recounted to her the story of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his own father.

    I feel so bad for her and her family. Her dad seemed amazing in so many ways and inspired so much of her creativity but the alcohol 😞
    I can’t imagine stressful this had to have been for her mom and frustrating.
    It’s so interesting to see all the places she got inspiration from to create Mary Poppins. It’s a bit of herself, a bit of her dad, a bit of others plus life experiences.

    • @klassicalmuzik
      @klassicalmuzik 2 года назад +2

      I emphasize for her mother too. It seemed that her marriage fell apart and there was nothing she could do to save her husband as he plummeted into the decadents of alcoholism. Slowly her family lost everything: first their house and then they move into a dissolute house in the middle of nowhere, her husband hurts himself by falling and is rendered cripple, he descends further into alcoholism, her family’s reputation is squashed after he makes a spetical of himself, all the while she’s trying to keep the family’s home life together. She tired to keep things together until her mind snapped and drove her to attempt suicide and traumatize her daughter.
      I don’t condone her Suicide attempt and the trauma she inflicted on her daughter, but you gotta feel for her to think about everything that brought her to that situation.

    • @ravenm6443
      @ravenm6443 2 года назад +1

      @@klassicalmuzik I couldn’t agree more. It’s so sad. What I also think makes it harder is back then, there was a lot more pressure to keep appearances, which the mother tried to do but her husband making a fool of himself in the public eye would have made this extremely difficult for her. Everyone kept to their own business other than to gossip. Who was she to rely on to help her? Back then, you pretty much only had yourself. And on top of that, if she had seen a dr, they could have institutionalized her for just about anything. It makes sense why she snapped. I can’t imagine the pressure, heartache and frustration. I just wish mental health and personal well being wasn’t so stigmatized from the beginning. I’m glad we live in an era now where it’s far more acceptable to talk openly about issues we’re having. I wish this had been available for her back then.

    As beauty and emotional as it is, it is sometimes changed to be more emotionally Disney(that's the best way to phrase it). I've read that P. L. Travers actually didn't ride a carousel and didn't like going to Disneyland (but it's hard to find a lot of info on it). And she also didn't like Let's go Fly a Kite sadly despite how the movie portrays it, though by movie standards that is a sweey scene.
    I think the biggest part though that's mixed for me is the ending, from what I've read she didn't like the film still and later on did admit it was a good film but she just has to live with it since it isn't like her books, to which I totally understand.
    But ah man, either way your emotions in this Nick, thank you for sharing them with us. It's rare to see someone show their emotions that much and I am glad you did cause it shows how strong you are❤

    (8:36) Interesting fact during this Disneyland scene: With all these extras standing outside the gates all dressed up in 1960s clothing, it was to help conceal the modern day ticket scanners and monitors under the roofs of the entrance. However, when Ralph drives right in with Travers, you can now briefly see those monitors, thus creating an anachronism.

    Hey Nick, You won't know me but my name is Callum Young and I live in the UK but I am a big fan of your RUclips channel. This film had really hit me a year later after I saw the film at the Cinema with my Dad and (My Best Friend Forever) second older sister Lydia. This is because I related to scenes of her childhood and the scene with Disney in her house, in 2014 she nearly died after taking a lot of medical tablets which I have always blamed myself because I felt like I was not taking care of her but she doing well for herself. Since then, we have always chatted when we can and after watching this film she understood how a film is planned in pre-production, watch a film together on Netflix or Disney+ and then talk about the film we have watched together.
    Thank You for (1.) being yourself and (2.) seeing myself in the world because I am such a huge fan of film and TV shows!

    She didn't like pears, because it was the last thing her dad asked for and so goes for the red color, she didnt' want it, because of the blood. She didn't like money, because it ruined her dad. She didn't want imagination, because her dad lived in it before reality hitted hard and it was a trauma etc. It's definitely a movie to be seen at least twice, because you can lose something along the way, but I only watched it one time, because it was too much for me, it's subjective. Sad and beautiful at the same time, for me a masterpiece! Walt Disney "saved" her dad, but by doing so, he saved her too. May not be the real thing, but I like to think so.

    As someone who didn’t really care for the Mary Poppins movie, I genuinely enjoyed this film. Not only because I love behind the scenes looks at how movies and shows are made but the acting and the script for this were really really good. I cry every time I watch this movie.
    While there are definitely some liberties taken with things (Travers really did not like the final product from what I hear) this movie is easily in my top ten favorite movies of all time.

    Too bad P.L Travers wasn't like Cressida Cowell. She didn't care about the overwhelming changes done to the How to Train Your Dragon books, and enjoyed the movies as they were. Gave the creators the freedom they wanted while at the same time staying true to the essence of the books.
    Still, you have to understand Travers after all she's been through. Great reaction Nick, as always.

    Seeing as this is one of my favorite movies, I enjoyed this reaction quite a lot ♥️
    This movie also inspired me to watch another biopic movie called,
    "Walt Before Mickey" because of the scene where Walt is recalling his past and his father to Mrs. Travers.
    "Walt before Mickey" is a biopic movie about Walt Disney as a struggling, young man before he created Mickey and his empire.
    That one is also worth a watch if you ever get the chance to see it.

    I think that what I appreciated so much about this movie is that they didn't have to agree in the end. At the end of the day, they all found comfort and hope and the motivation to keep living through stories, and while they didn't agree on how the story was told, they recognized how important stories are. I agree that the scene about storytelling may be one of the best in film to date, love the reaction, I cry every single time!
