Changed mine yesterday using your instructive video. Ford owners manual for my 2017 F-350 says about 6L will drain from the water separator, but because of others comments I had 2 - 1 gallon jugs standing by. I started getting worried when the 2nd one was 3/4 full but it stopped at 1-3/4 gallons. Owners manual also says to cycle the ignition 6 times and it took that many times for mine to fill. Great and resourceful video. Thanks again.
I lost close to 10 gallons of diesel. I had a full tank when I started. Maybe that was the problem. Next time, I'll do it on a close to empty fuel tank.

Wow! Thanks so much for the tutorial. I recently watched a few others on the same process and each one of them made it sound like rocket science and that I'd destroy my truck if I tried it myself. Thanks so much.
The only thing that is inconsistent between trucks is the amount of time it takes to drain the water separator. Some guys say it just goes and goes and they give up after a a couple of gallons. I've never had more than a half gallon come out but just be ready to catch fuel in a clean container and let it finish. No need to disconnect fuel lines above.
I just changed both the fuel filter and fuel/water separator filter at 25k on my 2017 F250. I had no water in the drained fuel or in the separator filter, but I live in Northern California where we have very low humidity and relatively mild winters. However, I cut the fuel filter in half to examine the filter and it was very dirty and will be changing it every 20K after seeing it. Glad I didn't wait any longer.
Very nice in less then 5min . I like to put the Engine hours and mileage on the bay filter . I typically go 20000km but only cause of Canadian climate .
Great video. Alot of people don't understand how critically important it is to change these filters on the 6.7L at regular intervals. Failure to do so will likely lead to the high pressure fuel filter to lock up and shred metal all downstream into the fuel system, and the ONLY repair at that point will involve an $8K to $10 repair and pretty much the only place that can do it properly is the Ford dealer.... The filters can get clogged enough to restrict diesel to the HP fuel pump (the diesel itself lubricates that pump) and then it locks up.
Very helpful. The front most connector on the filter under the hood is the most tricky to get off. It seems after the colored tab is slid back an extra squeeze in the right spot got it loose. Can anyone advise if the rear (bottom) filter would show any visible signs of the CP4 pump deterioration? Would you be able to see any partical / shavings on the medium of the bottom / rear filter? Oh my gawd! Your yellow plug didn’t break during draining? That is literally a first. I carry 3-4 in my glovebox. It seems if you look at it cross-eyed it will break. One of the diesel performance brands now makes an aluminum one. Anyway, I had trouble with the round filter connectors. When I did my first there were no videos. I recall requesting that video from you 2 years ago haha. Glad to see you back on the tube. I noticed at the end you didn’t prime the fuel pump 6 times as supposedly required.
Lol. I haven't broken the little nubs off yet but I have a replacement in the tool box just in case. What's worse is that you can break the plastic channel off that the plug tabs glide in. Then you're replacing the entire assembly. Heard about that on the interwebs and I can see how it can happen. Yeah, sorry it took so long. It was worth the wait though! I think I only prime about 4 times now.
Lol, I literally just changed mine today! Went surprisingly smooth. My oil change yesterday, on the other hand, not so hot due to a filter that wasn’t tight enough and left a bit of a mess on my garage floor. Spent more time cleaning than changing the oil! Live and learn!

How much diesel drains out before it stops leaking. Do you disconnect the fuel line on the housing before changing the fuel bottom filter, some say that if you don't the fuel tank can just keep on draining all the fuel in the tank
First of all thank you for your channel and videos!!! First time Diesel owner here, 2017 F350 Platinum, got it from a Ford dealership with 53000 miles on it a year ago. One year and 3000 miles later I got check engine light on and code P0087 (Fuel Rail/system pressure too low) Replaced both filters last saturday, took me 40 minutes!!!! I reset code with my autozone bought scanner... check engine light and code came back on last Sunday after pulling trailer with compact tractor (6000 lbs) for 6 miles, came back home and let truck sitting on the yard Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday drove truck the same 6 miles but no load, then when I came back home I realized the check engine light reset itself.... any idea??
I just noticed my 2017 is leaking fuel. The top of the fuel filter had fuel on it and I can see a little dripping underneath the truck. Do you known what the cause of this is? My truck only has 39,000 miles on it. I’m wondering if this is covered under warranty
If you're talking about the filter on top of the engine, it's likely a hair-line crack in the filter itself. I've heard about that several times. Change the filter and the drip is gone. Don't change it and one day it will spray diesel fuel right on the exhaust manifold. No bueno.
Exact same process on your 2019. It's easy. Just be careful when you open and close the yellow water separator drain. Some guys report breaking the black plastic collar that the plug goes into. You have to press in when turning.
I've heard that if the tank is full, it may siphon fuel for a long time. Changing the filters when the tank is nearly empty has never had this problem.
I've heard of that happening but haven't experienced it myself. Try opening the fuel cap so any pressure in the system is relieved. You can also unscrew the water separator a little bit to break the seal between the upper and the lower "box" part of the assembly. When air is allowed into the water separator box, the vacuum is lost and siphoning will stop. The other thing I've heard to do is to make sure you change the filters when the tank is near empty.
That little plastic cover comes with the new filter. If Ford decided it was important enough to cover that port during packaging and shipping, it was important enough to leave on until the last moment. That way nothing can accidentally get in there before re-attaching the fuel line.
So, I've asked many sources from Dealers to county waste sites and no one can tell me, or they don't want too, WHERE to dispose of the fuel you drain out, with out without water in it. Can you answer that ?? Seems like you're doing this at home.
Save it in a small fuel can or bottle. When me and my buddies all go camping we all bring a cup or two of diesel from our filter changes and toss it in the campfire. Some auto shops will take bad fuel as well as used oil and transmission fluid. Most fire stations will also dispose of flammable fluids.
I’m confused is there no second fuel filter in the water separator? Looks like you just cleaned it out and changed the gasket. My 2011 6.7 had the same upper filter and a different lower filter.
No TV trickery here. ;) Pull out the old separator and install the new one. The filter kit includes a new separator, gasket and high pressure filter for in the engine compartment. I had a 2011 also and there are a couple of differences. Obviously the water separator is very different now and the high pressure filter uses three ports now instead of just two.
The manual for my 2018 F350 6.7 liter literally says this "Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuel filter that is integrated with the fuel tank. Regular maintenance or replacement is not needed." Anybody else have that in theirs?
Great video! Love the channel. Question... How much fuel drained out? I have done mine twice and the first time only about 1 Gallon drained out but yesterday I did it and 3.5 gallons drained. Thanks!
This is an inconsistent thing. On the day I did this video, only a half gallon or so came out. I don't know if it's related to fuel level in the tank. Ford's instructions say to disconnect one of the fuel hoses on top of the separator but that is a pain and likely not good for those little fragile clips. I've heard that some guys will loosen the screws holding the fuel separator housing just a bit until it lets air in and breaks the vacuum. Then it will drain only the housing and not siphon fuel from the tank. I'm going to try this next service and see how that goes.
I followed this, and was able to change the fuel filters on my truck. Being a first time diesel owner, it was nice to see this video covering the process. I was able to some money and learn in the process. Thank you for posting this video to help others. It is very much appreciated!

Sure. Engine oil in Ford diesels have some diesel fuel in it anyway. The DPF regeneration process is notorious for that.
How much diesel drains out before it stops leaking. Do you disconnect the fuel line on the housing before changing the fuel bottom filter, some say that if you don't the fuel tank can just keep on draining all the fuel in the tank

Some auto shops will take bad fuel as well as used oil and transmission fluid. Most fire stations will also dispose of flammable fluids.
what was that aerosol that you used to spray out the fuel filter housing?
Any contact cleaner or brake cleaner will do.
Are you sure that's OK to use Break cleaner there? These fuel systems and plastics are all so damn sensitive these days...
Outstanding video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
Nice. Good info and concise. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
did you replace water filer as well with new gasket?
Yes, that was a brand new one going in there. The fuel filter kit has a new water separator, gasket and engine bay (high pressure) filter.
Excellent to the point no bs video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the information and posting :)
Awesome 👍🇧🇷
Awesome! Thank you
The manual for my 2018 F350 6.7 liter literally says this "Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuel filter that is integrated with the fuel tank. Regular maintenance or replacement is not needed." Anybody else have that in theirs?
??? You must have the limited version misprint manual.
Thank you!
May want to change the title. My 2019 clips are different and different colors. Yellow, brown and white.
Interesting. Are the hoses the same?
@@EpicCowlick same but clips are different and colors are different
awesome video, thank you!
Glad it helped!
damn good video.
It's a clear vinyl hose.
