NOTE: AFTER LOOSENING THE YELLOW DRAIN VALVE, IMMEDIATELY BEGIN TO LOOSEN AND REMOVE THE CANISTER. A POPPET VALVE WILL STOP THE FUEL FLOW WHEN REMOVED. IT WILL JUST KEEP DRAINING IF YOU LEAVE VALVE OPEN AND DON'T REMOVE CANISTER. Forgot to mention this in the video.

On the lower fuel bowl there is a little tab at the very top that meets up with a little tab on the housing itself. When you tighten it, these will touch, and that is the stopping point. As mentioned in the video, if you crank on it, this tab will break off and damage the filter housing. Apparently the previous owner of my truck had done just that as I watched this video to find out how to remove the bowl and after getting it off, found the housing broken at that point. Thankfully the damage is just that little area and it still seals. Get a light up there and watch as you tighten it and that will prevent an Oh Shit moment. This video was quite helpful on the lower filter. Appreciate it.
I read a few who had air issues. What I did was replace the top one first, then ran the truck a bit to purge it, then did the lower one. I turned the ignition on and waited until the fuel pump changed pitch before starting. No issues with it starting.

Yes changing one at a time then running it definitely helps. I've had a few times I've been in a hurry and did them both and she wanted to crank for a few seconds before firing. Same goes for semi trucks too we always do one at a time or else you have an oh shit moment haha

Thanks! I'd changed my filters before but I needed a quick refresher. The note about loosening the filter housing as soon as you open the yellow drain valve was particularly helpful. When I completed the air purge process the engine wouldn't start but then I remembered from the first time I changed my filters that the same thing happened and corrected the problem by tightening the filter housing one more turn. After that everything worked just fine.

I had the same issue as others, followed instructions to a T, got low fuel pressure warning and it was hard to start up. Also fuel pump when you turn the key on but not crank it was making unusual sounds. I tightened the bottom filter as hard as I could by hand but I figured I'd give the wrench a try, sure enough I got another turn out of it. So unless you're super strong or have a brand new truck, you might need to use the wrench for the last turn or so to prevent air from getting in. After doing this and doing the key thing 6 times again, I heard a much more normal sounding fuel pump and could hear the air leaving the system. Started right up fine after that. Hope this helps others, and thanks for the video! Saved me a lot of money! (Also fuel filters are cheap on Amazon, $30 less than my local O'Reilly!)

Had trouble getting truck started after the ‘six cycles’. Took many more cycles and a while with the starter. Once cranked, got low fuel pressure message. Truck would only run a few minutes. Was nervous about tightening the frame filter an additional revolution, because I didn’t want to break anything. Got desperate and decided to tighten it that extra 360 degrees (so the electrical plug would reach its connector again). After the extra turn, when I did the six 30 second cycles again, I could clearly hear the fuel being pumped into the filter. Sure enough, the truck cranked up and no more issues. I believe the extra turn on the canister was required to reseat the fuel poppet valve that is in the author’s ‘Please Read 1st note’.

    RECOMMENDATION!!
Start by removing your fuel tank cap. And the chance event that when you open the drain cock the fuel will continue siphoning from the tank. I just performed this job, and the drain cock bled out almost 2 gallons of fuel before a Ford maintenance tech recommended to break the seal at the tank cap.
Other than that this is a fantastic video that really made everything very easy.

Really nice nice video! Concise and too the point.
The only thing id recommend is snapping the filter into the lower housing (bowl) instead of the rail mounted pump (0:55).
The filter can get caught on the clips in the bowl when you screw it on and instead of snapping into place can break the retention clips and possibly crack the pump housing.
Ask me how I know lol

I didn't see your updated instructions about breaking the seal on the lower canister and I forgot from the first time I replaced the filters. About the time that I had filled a beer can three time and was on my way to filling up a coffee can, I remembered. :)
I purged 6 times as instructed but it is still having trouble starting. I test drove it. It seemed fine. But trying to start it 30 minutes later, it was difficult again. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets better.
    Other than that, great video.

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I am a pretty strong guy and I was very careful to not overtighten the lower canister. It was lined up and seemed like it was getting tight (getting jerky since working against the gasket). I tried to get to to move again by hand with no luck. I was NOT going to break it by overdoing it. When I was still having starting problems because of an obvious lack of fuel, I looked at a Ford forum and saw where a common problem is not bottoming out the canister and it can still suck air slowly. Put a 1 1/4 wrench on it and damn if I didn't get another turn before it obviously stopped. It's been half an hour and it still starts right up.

This was very helpful for installing. The exception for me is that I have had to prime in the 30 second intervals way more than 6 times. Not exaggerating, for me it was more like turn the key forward and wait 30 seconds but repeat that step 50-60 times then put the charger on the battery.

One thing I didn’t do is keep the key turned forward. I know we’ve all been told don’t do that but if you go to start it apparently you have to turn the key on and let it “start” for 15-20 seconds.

Well it killed my battery and had to retune my truck and make sure u tighten the lower. Fuel. Filter till it bottoms out or it will go into limp mode and barely run speed limit tighten it up went right to work i suggest hooking battery charger to batteries while priming pump to keep this from happening

    • @dhaskins04
      @dhaskins04 2 года назад

@@jasonvaughn3736 I had the exact same thing this time. The first time I did it I had trouble getting it to start. I drained by battery.
The second time I did it after several attempts I decided to turn the key and let it try to start for 20 straight seconds…it fired up but…like you…this time I didn’t go the extra turn and I went into limp mode. Definite a pain. After I turned it one more time it was fine but then I had to get the check engine light code removed so I could use my remote start.

Great Video. My problem wasn't over tightening the fuel filter housing, my problem was the previous person who I bouight the truck from over tighten the housing. When I went to loosen the housing it just broke right at the 32MM nut. Diesel fuel all over. Good thing I was able to order a replacement housing on Amazon that said it should be here today, I sure hope it is. I'm going to make sure I don't overtighten. Also I couldn't find the link to order filters from.

Hi. 2011 Ford F450, 6.7l Diesel, Lariat, Crew Cab, Long Box, Black. I followed all video and notes exactly (with 1 exception, I snapped the new bottom filter into the removed housing rather than up into the stationary housing above then closed it all up like shown), including cycling the key for fuel pump to purge air. After 6th cycle she attempted to start: it cranked, began to fire up while adding some pedal, then died. Checked all hose and electronic connections. Solid, no leaks. Repeated the key cycling process all over again during which my assistant clearly heard what sounded like a good burp (think Tupperware) or a wet fart come from the engine. I heard it too while sitting in the cab. Once second 6-cycle was completed attempted to start again. She cranked for a while but no turnover whatsoever this time...the cranking (starter?) turned itself off (timed-out) or just stopped. Checked everything again. What is the visible pitot sensor in the (bottom filter) removable housing supposed to look like? Could I have damaged it while cleaning out the crud? Please advise ASAP -- I have 6 horses in New Orleans that should have been in Montana yesterday. LOVED THE VIDEO. Thank you. Mike.

Michaelindsey: it's been 3 years but what did it take to you get your F450 2011 going after the DIY fuel filter debacle? You had to get 6 horses to Montana. My truck won't start either after changing.

You have to remove a metal guard first before the lower filter housing can be unscrewed. It takes a 10 mm wrench and one bolt, then it swings up pit of the way.
