I guess what I’m curious about is where exactly is it written that 225+ degrees will damage the transmission? Ford engineering designed this truck purposely for towing and I couldn’t imagine them putting the wrong thermostat into tens of thousands of trucks. I know SPE wants to sell these units but I’d like to know the facts about the original engineering before I consider contemplating a change.
You could use simple logic. The cooler a transmission runs the longer it will last. I put a large trans cooler on my 2000 7.3 Super Duty and had 305K on the truck when I sold it with having never pulled the transmission. Also ran Amsoil Synthetics. Also never pulled the valve covers. I recently did the same thing with my 2017 F350 6.7, since it served me well before. Do a search for "transmission heat chart" and you'll see the point. Great question! I also had a by-pass oil filter system and extra deep Mag Hytec transmission pan.
@@upurnose46 The cautionary range (yellow on the dash gauge) is 230-250f. You can run those temps all day without harm to the tranny. The "red zone" is above 250. There’s a lot of info on this fluid if you search it out. I pull a 14000 lb fifth wheel travel trailer and I’ve never seen my trans temp get above 220 and the tranny and cooling system is completely stock. I cannot believe Ford or GM... amongst several other brands would recommend a fluid that breaks down in the cautionary zone and give you such a small tolerance between good temps and bad.
@@secretsquirrel8010 The "red zone" is when mechanical failure will begin. The fluid will be severely degraded by then. A quick google search will tell you that dexron vi should not go above 220*f
A couple things to keep in mind with this: #1: depending what you're running for a tune, you will get a CEL with this thermostat, because it won't see it's minimum operating temp ( I had this on my one customers 16 super duty) #2: this will only help trans temps on 17+ trucks, as the 11-16 run the transmission cooler on the secondary system. Another thing, there is a thermostat on the transmission you can actually remove to lower your trans temps without adding additional coolers. One other thing is a question, what area of western pa are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm from a little east of Pittsburgh.
Corey, isn’t your truck hyper tuned ? If so than wouldn’t that alone really increase your temp ? I guess the question I have is would this really benefit a non-tuned 6.7 ?
How do you get away with wheels like that im guessing trucks not registered in pa thats cop magnet on northern east pa im watching this being my 19 750 is getting hot only 7000 miles always in shop trying to get out of this truck
I bet you won’t like it this winter in Florida we run a 190 degree thermostat because we have hot conditions and don’t use heater much i run under 200 I only pull a boat not much weight
Probally not a good idea if you have stock emissions. The emissions regen does not start until you reach normal operating temps. The 20 degree drop will delay the start of a regen. For sort trips, this could lead to problems. You will also have delays in cabin heat during the winter. Mama might not like that.
The truck still takes the same amount of time to go from 0-175* . With the SPE thermostat it will just open at 175* rather than waiting until 194* as it does with the OEM thermostat.
I have pulled now over 100K miles on my 2013 F450 platinum. Have a 20K 5th wheel pulling all over the US including mountains. Never once had a hot temp on xmsn oil or engine. As a matter of fact the oil temp and xmsn temp are almost identical while towing NEVER going much over 200* even in the summer time.
I’m no expert so I could be wrong Terry but I believe from the 2017+ they started doing the fluid temp control on the primary system which makes it run hotter as to where previously before 2017 they ran it on the secondary system.
Ran a product like this in my 6.4. Threw all kinds of codes made it run rich trying to get it up to operation temperature and clogged my EBP sensor twice. These trucks are designed to run high temps. My worry is that causing them to run cooler makes the truck wanna run harder to make it up to factory running temps. I now have a 6.7 and kinda nervous to try aftermarket thermostats.
I have one as well. Wondering if you've ever made that move, and was it worth it? I'm still new to these machines, so ANY wise info will help! Thank you, and any others who reply. 🤷♀️👩🔧👍🙏

I was wondering who would notice that. The thermostat he changed has nothing to do with cooling the transmission. The lower ambient temp on the 2nd run had event to do with it. Also the red zone on the ezlynk monitor is a preset suggestion, no matter the vehicle. It has nothing to do with ford or the engine. My 19 450 6.7 regularly hits 230-240 degree oil temp in the summer when towing heavy.
I had to change my thermostat for opposite problems. The truck never got above 155 degrees no matter what I was doing and it requires 158 degrees minimum to do a regen. So, it went months with no regen and was 100% clogged. It's getting deleted this spring anyway though. lol

There are numerous reasons why Ford engineers designed the 6.7 Diesel and their transmission to run at those higher temps. Changing that is basically re-designing the system😳.
Jake Heke you don’t think the engineers at Ford didn’t consider that when they designed the oil to run at those temps? They could of simply used a thermostat to run at a lower temp if were an issue. The specific oils used today are perfectly happy to do their jobs more efficiently at higher temps.

I have a 2020 6.7 will this thermostat work on it
Are you supposed to disconnect the hot side of the battery vice the ground when working on vehicle?
that's what they say
There are numerous reasons why Ford engineers designed the 6.7 Diesel and their transmission to run at those higher temps. Changing that is basically re-designing the system😳.
Jake Heke you don’t think the engineers at Ford didn’t consider that when they designed the oil to run at those temps? They could of simply used a thermostat to run at a lower temp if were an issue. The specific oils used today are perfectly happy to do their jobs more efficiently at higher temps.
@@skoffco Manufacturers run hot engine temps because it helps emission compliance, not for longevity
