How to properly clean a Dyson DC59 head and fix one that's not rotating (V6 and V7 too)

  • The Dyson DC59, V6, V7, or V8 vacuum head has a design flaw that means every few months you have to clean it out thoroughly or the vacuum will stop working altogether. This applies mainly to the DC59 Animal (amzn.to/1WziSBt) and the DC59 Motorhead (which was used in this video).
To do this procedure I'd recommend you use a wire coat hanger, a large coat or screwdriver, and then some cleaning supplies, since there will be a lot of dust.
This cleaning process will improve performance on vacuums when done regularly but will also revive what appears to be a broken DC59. Or if the vacuum turns on, but the beater bar/tube won't turn, which will probably fix that as well. These vacuum heads range from $60-$200 (amzn.to/24ir4f0) so it's definitely worth taking care of them!
The Dyson V6 (amzn.to/1WziTFo) is a newer model and does not suffer from this problem, but it's a good lesson to learn because any collection of dust or fluff in the vacuum's head will decrease cleaning power.
    Buy the DC59 Motorhead: amzn.to/1WziQcJ

I'd like to add that there is another cleaning step that needs to be done to make sure that the brush heads can spin because I did all this cleaning and my brush heads did not spin. There's a part of the vacuum that needs to be cleaned that Dyson's troubleshooting doesn't tell you that I discovered after I contacted support. Hopefully they add this new information to that page. Essentially you need to take out the entire bin and clean out the back part of the bin where it's really hidden because the dust can block the metal contact points that send power to the brush heads. This is the area directly in front of the trigger. The way you detach the bin is by pressing the red lever to open the bottom bin door. Once open, press the lever again to release the bin from the machine. Hope this helps!

YOU WERE CORRECT LINDSEY!!! I did not have any debris in the head/beater bar area and then I saw your comment. I have often removed the bin but never thought of lint accumulating in the right angle area formed by the handle and the top of the vacuum. I removed the bin and when I looked up into the corner formed by the right angle I saw a very small clump of lint. I tried blowing it out but had to use a toothpick to remove it. I also notice the contact points you described. I put the bin back on and the vacuum work like new. Thank you for that info.

You can take off the back strip to help clean the shelf. You just undo the little grey, round screw head which is on the right if you have the head with the hose inlet on the top as you look at it. A £1 coin opens the big side lock. Good video, thank you!

It's long overdue to be replaced with a universal screwdriver fit, or provide the key to open these flimsy plastic screws on the vacuum itself.

An annoying rattling sound drew me to this excellent video. The instructions are superb for removing the brush bar. I used the edge of a bottle-opener to extract the brush. The V11 appears to have improved the shelf design, so it was relatively easy to clean. Anyway, it's all new to me, so thank you all for your brilliant ideas!

Very helpful as far as it goes. But I've found that dirt and cat hair also collects in the joint between the body of the head that you focus on and the tube to the canister. It's very difficult to dislodge the hair-dirt clumps when they get stuck in the joint crevices. I was hoping you would show how to completely disassemble the joint.

A jammed head may be only part of the story. Don't forget the filter that fits into the bit you hold. That also clogs up and needs a good rinse and squeeze in warm water. Drying it is a pig - it takes at least 24 hours and I discovered the tumbledrier was a bad idea! But once clean, the thing works again.

I cleaned all of mine but still rolls and then stops after a few seconds, it will start again if I wait 1-2 seconds. I think there might be some hair into the end of the motor where there is the open gap and you see the spring, how do you access that area to clean that? I checked the canister contacts and they are clean, I also have another direct drive head (smaller one) which works fine, so it's not the rest of the vacuum for sure, it's some problem located in the direct drive motor head of my V7 animal.

The Dyson is great in many respects, but the powerhead is one of the worst features, first nonstandard soft plastic screws, then the gunk collection shelf, the hose elbow that clogs so readily, and that's without thinking about the tiny battery and awkward charging dock - maybe by version V99 they will have fixed the many blindingly obvious flaws, instead of adding superfluous shite like laser-guided dust detection.
