- Dyson Cordless Vacuums turn off and on by itself. This can be a filter or hair on the roller. When it's not there is most likely hair binding the floor attachment motor. Here is how to fix it without the cost of replacing the attachment

Fantastic tutorial. I was just on the verge of buying a new Motörhead when I spotted your video. I had tried everything previously but the spindle was stuck fast. As soon as I added the oil and turned the brush spindle to spread the lubricant it freed up! Thanks so much.
Thank you. This helped fix my v6. I started taking all the casing off too and got stuck with the wires in the motor. Then i just yanked out the spindle and managed to clean out the hair without disconnecting the motor. Very satisfying thanks again
Great job, thank you. I had tried to fix it myself, but got ‘stuck’ with the hidden screw in the spindle drive. then I found your video and managed to get a ‘watchmakers’ screwdriver to remove it. Success, all thanks to your instructions. Much appreciated.
This was extremely helpful! SHORTCUT: skip unscrewing all of the housing screw and only use the T-8 to unscrew the spiral bladed connector.
Most of the time the spiral blade is on really hard and difficult to remove if you don't take the rest of this apart. After doing this a few times you might be able to take the shortcut.

In my case, the motor was broken.

Worked like a dream. The last fitting was very stiff but finally came off with the right leverage and found what seemed like metres of hair! It runs like a new cleaner now and replacement heads are pricey. Thank you.

Couldn't believe the hair that got into the mechanism and stopped the brush bar from working and now it's all fixed and good as new after following the steps in your video!
I have had to do this twice now and with 4 cats I'm sure it won't be the last time. I could see others like you who would be in the same boat. Those brush head accessories are expensive and this is a 15-20 minute fix.

I thought I cleaned mine thoroughly, but it continued to not spin. After seeing this video, I realized I didn't remove the drive gear, which was the problem. Thanks, dude! You just saved me from spending $140 on a new powerhead!!!
Thanks! I’ve watched a lot of videos on how to fix my Dyson with intermittent roller brush spinning, but your video is the one that fixed it. Can’t believe how much hair had accumulated around the bearings! Using a fine picking tool was essential for cleaning it out. Thanks again!

Tried everything and this was meant to be the last straw. Almost gave up when couldn't find size 8 to take screw out. Followed instructions exactly and it worked! Saved me a lot of money! Yippee!!
Wow ours is now working yippee ! Couldn’t get the part that spins around to turn. Removed the last screw and low and behold it was jammed with little hairs. Removed now and hoover working again. Saved me £30 as that was what Dyson wanted to send a new part.

Performed all the troubleshooting that dyson.com had. Called the support line since that didn't help. They said "oh, your motor is going out. You'll have to buy a new one."
"How much is that? And can I get a discount?"
"Sure, 20% off comes to $160."
Can't believe they want $200 for a new head. This video saved me.
(Side note: if this doesn't work, search DC59 compatible motorhead. Found some off-brand ones for $25 on Amazon. Better than spending $160 or just buying a whole new Dyson)
Exactly the demo we needed, that spindle was so tightly wound with hair it was amazing the head rotated as long as it did.

Thanks so much! I called Dyson, paid $25, and waited 3 weeks for a replacement brush bar that didn't work. I called them back and they told me I had to pay $200 + tax and shipping to replace the head...no thanks. This fixed it!
Yep, just got off the phone with them myself. Their trouble shooting consisted of checking the tube for obstructions... Then recommended me to send it in
I had got to the very last part and did not feel confident that the part could be just pulled off, so many thanks for the vid showing it could. My vacuum is now as good as new.
Nice clear instructions to get me to the root of the problem, which was hair trapped in the spindle in the motor section. I had to use pliers to remove the spindle mechanism as it wouldn't budge by just trying to pull. I'm sure next time I'll be able to do this task three times quicker! Thanks.
Glad it worked out for you. Yes, the spindle is on really hard. What is nice to know is that pulling really hard on it won't break it.

I finally found a T8 narrow enough to get into that Technician's screw hole up the motor end (y'know, the one designed to make it hard for ordinary people to undo so you have to take it in for an expensive service) and your video made the rest soooooo much easier! Thank you so much. Saved me money and taught me something I didn't know before. Appreciate that the spindle could have been removed after removing the brush but that wouldn't have given me the opportunity to remove all the dust and hair that had accumulated in the other parts of the head and particularly around the motor so your method is a much more thorough fix. This was so informative. We managed to remove the offending part (nervously, carefully and sighed with relief when it didn't break). The amount of hair coiled up inside was an amazing amount. This video saved us $140.00 nz.

Very many thanks for this in depth strip down. I was a little stuck on getting the top cover off after taking out all the screws. I guessed there was a catch of some sort so it was great to see it in person so I could then see how to release it.

I looked everywhere for a tutorial like this and this is perfect. Was able to get the rotor off without removing the whole motor as some suggested, but it was still good to get in there to remove some junk from around the motor itself. Also didnt have a proper torx bit but a 2.4mm flathead did the trick. My wallet and I thank you a bunch!

Sorry it didn't fix your problem. Other things that can cause the stop and start are plugged up filters. Make sure to wash out the heppa filter as well as the one in the main storage tank.
Hi thank you very much for your informative video - I had not noticed tthe Torx 8 screw holding the brush drive.
I followed your instructions and took apart and cleaned - I found that a lot of hair and dust had got into main brush drive bearing and it was very rough when turned.
Having in a past life serviced power tools - I decided to remove the circlip (was very tight) but drilled a couple of small holes to the outside of the clip to enable a screw driver to get in there & lever the circlip off - be careful and hold so doesnt fly off - wear glasses.
I tapped out the bearing - the outside of which has a rubber/plastic seal.
I removed the rubber seal with a jewelers screwdriver and sprayed wd40 into the bearing and picked/washed out the hair. When clean and smooth to turn I then regreased the bearing and refitted - this time with the rubber seal to the inside to better prevent entry of the hair etc. into the bearing.
All back together and working well.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! I first used a german video but that one did not mention that the part at the motor has a screw inside and there was the real problem with a hair curl around the motor. After removing it I have added a bit of "men's deodorant" WD-40 and it all freed up instantly.

Massive thanks mate, I have 2 DC59's and was down to one small motorised head from the accessory kit. One torx 8 screwdriver later and both large heads are working perfectly. My only regret is that I couldn't take you up to 1000 subs.
This gets my vote for the very best DIY video to fix a roller brush that won't turn! 100 stars! (I'm a girl and I fixed my vacuum! woot!) :)

Thank you for the video. I did this but I also had to remove the black cover for the bearings under which there was even more hair stopping it working. Once I removed this and lubricated the bearings I put it back together, put the unit directly on the vacuum gave it some gentle persuasion which holding down the trigger and voila, it now spins like a jet engine.
Thanks man! Exactly what I was looking for … could not get the top cover off because I did not know about the clip. Plus the great tip to get a second HEPA-Filter to cover the drying time - why did I not think of that? This video made my day!

Great video. Lockdown hoover fix success... could have gone either way but took the plunge, went to buy a torx screwdriver (didn’t know what that was before...) and horrified what my hair can do... no pet to blame! Couldn’t pull out the wires but managed regardless. Thank you!!!

Great information, much appreciated. I wanted to go a step further and remove the spindle from its casing. I believe it's held in using a circlip. Don't really want to break anything. Found lots of hair, cleaned out, now working!

Brilliant instructional video, it's earn't me some brownie points for getting the Dyson working properly again. Wife and daughter both have long hair, clean the roller regularly, but couldn't believe how much got wound onto the spindle behind the drive spigot. Many thanks :)

Excellent video. Followed this and found a big wad of hair under the motor drive which was causing it to seize. It annoys me no end to see James Dyson coming on the TV and espousing design perfection and then having to deal with this mess frequently. We have a Nilfisk for 30 years and never had to "call technical support" for it
This was a very satisfying fix thank you for posting! I was convinced it was something else as I ran the brush head motor without the belt attached and it ran but then stopped much like it did when fully assembled.I guess the brush head motor needs a load to behave properly ??? Thank you sir 👍

Excellent video. I could have done it the quick way by putting a #8 Torx but would have missed a whole lot of hair clogging up other areas. So, in my case, I got a better job by dismantling the head unit as recommended in the video.
