  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1994 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, Bonkers.
Played through all stages and collected all of the heart containers.
I used to love the show Bonkers when I was a kid. My sister and I would watch it everyday after school, and that stupid theme song would get permanently lodged in our heads (to the point that we'd get yelled at by our dad during dinnertime for saying "Bonkers" in that weird burpy sounding voice over and over).
For those that don't remember, it was about "Bonkers D. Bobcat" (wow Disney, super creative there), a bobcat police officer that always meant well and screwed up everything for his partner, Det. Lucky Piquel, who resented him at every turn. It usually played out like some kind of kid's version of the interplay between Roger Rabbit and Eddie Valiant.
The game itself is pretty typical Capcom fare. It looks and sounds pretty nice, and has lots of fan service throughout - I was a huge fan of the secret room that had Donald and Mickey chillin' while you grabbed a 1-up. It tasks Bonkers with finding Toontown's treasures - the hat from Fantasia, Ariel's voice from The Little Mermaid, and the lamp from Aladdin. The game play feels like a combination of the Mickey's Magical Quest series and Buster Busts Loose - it's hop and bop, but you also have a dash mechanic that allows you to plow through obstacles and enemies.
I certainly liked the game back then because of my love for the show, but now? I'm not so sure. It's still a nice, wholesome, polished platformer, but it doesn't really feel like it adds much to the games that came before it. It's fairly formulaic, but still - if you like these types of games, and you're a fan of Disney's 90s cartoon line-up, you really can't go wrong.
I mean, hey - rehash or not, there's no denying Capcom made quality games, and there's no denying people loved them. Just look at Mega Man!
So, let's go Bonkers! Yeah, totally nuts! Bonkers, no ifs, ands, or buts!
And this is for a request - sorry I don't remember and can't now find who requested it, but if you see this - here you go! :)

Bonkers, the long lost relic of Raw Toonage, gets a pretty fair Capcom SNES platformer that pays a lot of fan-service to Disney worshippers. If that sounds like you, then, "Let's go, Bonkers! Yeah, totally nuts!"

*_"Bonkers"_* (SNES) | *_"Better than a certain OTHER bobcat side-scroller"_*
You probably don't remember this guy. And frankly, I don't either.
This game is based on an animated cartoon series of the same name. I haven't seen it *_myself_* , but it got reviewed favorably well and it *does* seem to have *_some_* kind of fan base. Nevertheless, I recently found out about this game and once I saw that *_Capcom_* had developed it, I *knew* I just had to give it a shot. Given their track record of licensed Disney games.
      POSITIVES
      • *_Great Graphics_* (This game looks great. The environments and sprites have a lot of detail to them, everything is smooth and well animated (Just look at Bonkers' walking animation. That is one of the smoothest SNES walk animations I've ever seen.), and the occasional Mode 7 in this isn't too shabby, either. It's not the *best* looking *_Capcom_* game, but it's still looks fantastic.)
      • *_Great Music_* (I really like this game's jazzy soundtrack. The melodies are upbeat and catchy, the instrumentation is excellent, and it does have that Disney-like whimsy that you know and love. There's not a single track in here that I *don't* like.)
      • *_Fun Gameplay_* (If you've ever played *_"Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose"_* on SNES, then this game should feel similar to it. Like that game, it's a 2D side-scrolling platformer. You can kill enemies via bombs or by jumping into them. Bombs can also be used to pop orange "?" balloons which house either collectables for upgrading your bomb count, donuts for health recovery, a power-up that lets Bonkers dash for a certain amount of time, or nothing at all. The dash is activated once the meter is full. If it isn't full yet, then you cannot dash. And the levels are well designed to utilize this ability with many rewards waiting for you if you can master using it very efficiently. The bosses are also very good. Requiring you to learn patterns and strategize effectively, or you'll die. Overall, a pretty solid game.)
      NEGATIVES
      • *_Careless Damage_* (Mainly because of the Dash feature. Bonkers moves really slow and you're instinctively going to dash all the time to get around that. But, the enemy placement and level design itself doesn't cater to those who just want to go fast and blaze through the game. Not a huge dealbreaker to me. But to gamers who appreciate a great sense of speed in a platformer, this could be a big turn off to them as they might not like taking their time through these stages.)
      • *_Knockback_* (It's about as annoying as you'd think it would be. Getting hit causes you to fly back and wait a bit before you can move again. Kind of a huge detriment to the afformentioned speedrunning community.)
      • *_No Password System or Saves_* (... At least in the American version. The Japanese version of the game has a password system. But because the game lasts about 30 mins, anyway. It was dumped. Kind of annoying that you gotta beat this in one shot, but it's nothing unbearable. Just a minor annoyance.)
      Final Rating: 7.8/10
Another licensed *_Capcom_* game that is surprisingly really fun to play. Kind of a shame that it meets the unfortunate fate of *_"Game based on something that nobody cared about, thus nobody probably cared about THIS and it is pretty rare and expensive because of that"_* though...

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 2 года назад +1

@@Dorian_Scott Not rare, nor that expensive, I paid $15.99 for a cart only copy not that long ago. And I DO remember the cartoon well enough.

Some interesting things I noticed is that the game actually tells you how long it took to beat each level and the combined length (?) at the end.
The last thing I noticed is that there aren't any staff credits... I looked around at other playthroughs and across the net to see why that might be but I couldn't find anything.
Maybe there's like a certain time required for it but who knows?
