The dream we haven't dared to dream | Dan Pallotta

  • What are your dreams? Better yet, what are your broken dreams? Dan Pallotta dreams of a time when we are as excited, curious and scientific about the development of our humanity as we are about the development of our technology. "What we fear most is that we will be denied the opportunity to fulfill our true potential," Pallotta says. "Imagine living in a world where we simply recognize that deep, existential fear in one another - and love one another boldly because we know that to be human is to live with that fear."

      I'd suggest you focus more on Being with them, than what you can Do for them. If you focus too much on doing then when you die you may have left them with material wealth, but no relational wealth, no great memories. The love you can show them is more important than stuff, land, or anything material.
      Also don't think you need to do this alone. Have your friends help you build the small house and you can help them with their house repairs. Form a community. not a community of one man against the odds.

    Very profound. Focussing on our own humanity on a daily basis from the most simple act of a smile to bigger communal projects, is a completely free way to enjoy living our lives regardless of our financial worth.

    I think people simply don't have that many concrete dreams about how they would like to be as a human being. Many are content with their lives, as long as they have friends, family, some entertainment and maybe an interesting hobby or career. They don't have a lot of specific dreams about how they would want to change themselves. But ask them about their dreams for future technology and they have a gazillion concrete ideas about everything from delivery drones to VR.

      Life is all based on perception. A majority of people are contempt in this world, the reason is that we are simplifying everything by taking all the hard work out but keeping the rewards. Popular states in the U.S have people who do not only feel satisfied with their life, but with the way the is world as well but rural areas obliviously notice the system is broken here in the U.S. What is my point? Those who perceive life in the view of their own eyes and not the worlds fall short to on a sense of urgency and loses balance between anything that weighs a burden on their faith, mind and health. We are taught to learn to so we can work or own a title. Isaac Newton did not study the laws of motion for a degree, nor did Galileo but we expect ourselves and children to work in one career field. Never are we (saying this briefly) taught to impact world but to impact our lives. Overall; that is why people are so comfortable with being a business owner, toy maker or being a movie producer. None of those careers will impact the world today or tomorrow, unless you made a really good fucking movie; other than that life is what you make it, and the passion for innovation, change and knowledge will be successful for those who have a sense of urgency for what the world needs tomorrow and by challenging their limits.

    • @ChazEvansdale
      @ChazEvansdale 8 лет назад +20

      His idea is that we should focus on improving humanity. The world is very individually focused. I think he's focused on breaking down invisible barriers so that we can work together, share together, live together, cry together, instead of being me against you. Wars are the breaking down of humanity, he's talking about a peace that transcends simply not attacking each other, or simply being nice, but rather actively helping each other as the standard. The standard now is closer to "You don't mess with me I won't mess with you", and many people even break that based on bias of opinion (racists, criminals, etc).
      His speech didn't seem like much, because it's the start of an idea. It's like me saying "We should have a centralized places to teach people" before there were schools. Humanity a lot of ways to improve. Humanity as a whole acts like high schoolers, sure we're smart enough to make new tech, some of us get all A's, we have a lot of potential, but we still have high school drama with how we treat each other, trying to one up people with what we own as if we're better than them, fighting our own species, separating ourselves into cliques, skin color, classes, sexual/religious/musical preferences instead of all working together.
      He has a dream that we can work to get rid of all that. A dream is to improve humanity. His speech had some examples of how we've already done that, as a way to encourage us that it's possible to make his dream a reality. But we've got to invest in the idea, like we've invested in technology, and then we'll see substantial improvements.

    They said there would be a dream in this video. 'Recognize existential fear' was close, but is more like a negative diagnostic first step than a positive visionary dream that normally follows such a diagnosis.
    Here's a dream - actually heal existential anxiety instead of just recognize it.
    Oh, and we already know of the process for this; enlightenment. Enlightenment eliminates the ego concept, which is the source of existenial anxiety about your essence.

      It's also not about just being dramatic or recollecting your thoughts, you have to give the audience time to process what you're saying too, constantly talking and giving no seconds for the audience to think as well means they won't pay attention to what you're saying, which makes the points that you're trying to make fall flat because they never had the time to recollect their own thoughts on what you are saying.

      I don't get it. Are you sure you read that right? "*all* goods and services" "available to *all* people *without* the need for means of exchange". Please, go find me an _actual_ example of this ever having been the case...
      Still sounds like freedom and abundance to me and is still not connected to any kind of tyranny in my eyes, unless you are talking about the natural limitations regarding the carrying capacity of Earth.

    • @pennymac16
      @pennymac16 8 лет назад

      ***** I see you don't understand the point. Thanks for admitting that it has never been the case, though, after asserting otherwise.
      " _...because resources are scarce..._ " -- Oh, really? That's exactly why a world economy should be based around the resources that *are* available and not act like there is 2.5x the amount as is the case today.
      " _...and humans are selfish._ " -- Yes, all are - to varying degrees. There is no reason to believe that the majority of people would envy others for their possessions if they could be provided with the necessities of comfortable living, which obviously is feasible. And no, I don't believe you would love to hear how, because whatever anyone says, I think you just want to show them that you're right in the assumption that it *can't* work in form of a "brilliant" retort. (Apparently, you couldn't even be bothered to look through the TVP site a little more for ideas.) Show otherwise or there is no point in arguing with you =)

    • @pennymac16
      @pennymac16 8 лет назад

      *****
      The "secret" is simple: The elevation of human consciousness. When the majority gets the chance and recognizes that fear and egotism are counterproductive in the grand scheme and in the long run, it would be easy to install systems that guarantee a comfortable standard of living for everyone.
      Sadly, most people today are caught in the systems of thought of today with hardly any chance of looking past the horizon. It has always been the case (from what I know), however, that the rate of change is anti-proportional to the level of system where it happens.
      So what we need to do is try and change the current systems in place for the better. Not having a perfect solution at the time doesn't excuse doing nothing about a horrible state.

    Those graphs pissed me off and is false to the nth degree. Talk to the gay youth and their access to information is not just access to info and talking at people but to hear others experiences and connecting to others like them. There is a huge growth of online communities, people finding others like themselves despite the miles between us, finding solace, ideas, inspiration, even crying with one another and realize a world larger than just those around us. Spoonies, neurodiverse, lgbt+, those of a new chosen religion with no community yet, in sickness and health, we are there for each other on tumblr, twitter, instagram, facebook, we are reaching out, listening, and giving. If you are not using those social networks that way then that's your loss.

    • @ducomors

      I agree. The fact about the internet that so many people miss is that the conversations that change the lives of their participants are generally private. no matter if it is a group of LGBT+ people, or mental heath, or religion or any topic that is important to the participants.
      The internet is not just what is trending on social media. It is deep, personal, conversations and education about
      topic that don't often get discussed anywhere else.

    Not only that last, but worth recalling that most humans, past, present, future, will not fulfill their dreams or potential. That is the human condition we all come to terms with. Or, looked at from a somewhat more rigorous point of view, by definition whatever you achieve in life is and was your potential. If you really had the potential for more, you would have done it. The ability to overcome obstacles, however many or hard, is part of potential. We all must face that, too. From that point of view, no one has ever failed to fulfill their potential. It is the truer point of view.

      No. No one has ever left low earth orbit, the earth is flat, the moon and other planets out there are not Teraferma, you cant jus go up and land on them.
      You have all been deceived big time! Unfortunately its probably too late for most of you, you let others dictate what your reality is and you never even consider questioning your masters.

    Maybe we could start by voting for humanitarians instead of bankers and lawyers to represent us in Government. Instead of representing the voter, our system has lost that dream. Now our government needs to be brought kicking and screaming to serve the voter. Lawyers and bankers are seldom dreamers, they are instead schemers.

    On one level, what an absurdly demanding and intrusive philosophy. It is no obligation on any of us to help others fulfill their dreams or potential, nor to accept unwanted help from others to fulfill our own. Many dreams do not require any help that another human can give- they have too many purely internal elements. It is for each of us to define and pursue our dreams, and to take each other of us as we find each other, interacting differently each time as circumstance and our natures demand.

      pRopaaNS dreams are what sometimes inspire inventions and discoveries. Without them, most wouldn't exist. Fantasy is escaping the real world to do what you want to do, how you want it. You're basically saying that "whatever you want that cannot be realized is stupid and idiotic". There's most likely something you want that you probably cannot achieve. If that's the case, you're calling yourself and idiot

      Except dreams are real. They will penetrate your life whether you choose to allow it or not. The point is that they have meaning about who we are and how we approach life. The point is also that this talk is not about dreams, it's about perceiving that what we have, and weighing it against our aspirations as humans.

    "If the moon could dream... I think that would be it's dream... for us..."
    Wow, that sounds like it's from an ultra cheesy 90s hollywood flick. Other than that I'm really missing a real idea here, apart from the obvious "Oh, come on let's be nice to each other" - which is a desirable goal. But come on, that' nothing that hasn't been repeated over and over for the last 2000 years. And how far did we come reaching that goal again?

    I could just of easily said the exact opposite using the same lines, it would be no less true than the original.
    I get using visualizations, but I think using tangible graphs commonly used to represent data is a bit misleading. Use something original.
