I feel like a lot of the time as a bassist it can be easy to get into the mindset of overplaying and cramming in as many lines as physically possible. Sonny keeps it simple. He knows what's good, isn't afraid to repeat himself and hits the ONE every time. An absolute legend.
I was thinking the same thing! Horn arrangement turns different colours and adds new flavours to an already amazing song! Baritone Sax guy sounds so incredible in the second song here.
It's actually a left-handed bass, but with the strings in right-handed order. Took me a while to figure out what's going on there. I think my brain would just stop braining if you hand me that instrument. xD
The horns are incredible on this. Mr Nelson must have relished it. Woah jam. Cory, the way you put together these amazing things for us, yet keep the focus on the other incredible musicians warms my heart.
Amen to that! I feel like im part of something so real and fresh and just amazing. It is advancing me as a musician, just to HEAR this stuff. How classy and funky can you get. Just keep doing what you all are doing, forever and a day. So much love. ❤✌😎
Didn't know I needed this. Jaco-inspired tune recorded at Prince's place. Two of my favorite anythings combined. Sonny T is too good. 5 billions stars.
Sonny Thompson being one of Prince's musical heroes, the shapes of the guitar/bass, THAT HORNS SECTION! - I would say the ghost of Prince is not far away here. Agree with the 5 billions stars!
Bass player here... 1) you are awesome Cory 2) I love these sessions you put together. You get such great musicians 3) it's so cool how you are the band leader/guitarist, but you never make it about yourself. And yet that makes me pay attention to you because I want to see what you choose to play. You're my favorite funk/groove/rhythm guitarist. 4) keep up the great work, and never get that "real job"!
Can we please talk about how dope that drum fill at about 1:52 is? The first time I heard it I had to rewind like 5 times to hear it again and again, and I'm not even a drummer. Also those horn lines are so epic, brings this song to a whole new level of awesome.
Sonny Thompson is a god. Groove, sound, accuracy, elegant power...this band is also perfect and this cover in the way of Prince or Funkadelic is a real masterpiece !
I believe this is the first time I've actually seen and heard a Cloud guitar played with a totally clean tone; no gain or effects. Sounds a lot like a Stratocaster, although that shouldn't be surprising given that it has an EMG Strat pickup in the neck position. Very cool to hear. Entire band is killing TBH, and NPG bassist Sonny T's tone and chops are always on point. Respect and RIP to the Purple One.
The legit FUNK machine!!! In the sacred halls of Paisley park + the original Dave Rusan "Cloud Guitar" + the infamous "Hornheads" - you can´t get any closer to the Prince vibe!
I love how even after how much they've played together there's still moments where you can tell Cory is like "freaking Sonny maaaannnn". This is such a ripping version! If any of you players are reading this, you all make my insides fizzy n stuff 😘
to me, there's nothing more impressive than true artists and musicians mastering their craft, just like these fine folks. flabbergast to witness the fact that they make it look so easy. outstanding performance from the whole band!
Great cover of Dean Town aside, the real treasure here for me is the jam. So simple, so funky and smooth, and those saxes are just absolute butter. Love it
OMG those horns!!!! What!!?? Such a nice touch on such a brilliant bass melody. Ohhh shit. Still getting me. Like a rocky theme song.. fuuuug. Nice one folks!!! Noiiiiice
I have watching these cats for years, especially Kory Wong. No doubt he’s gonna be a bad ass guitar player. And the bass player, Sony, off the chain good. Great job guys!
Legen........dary. I love this group. These are just such stone cold grooves that it is hard not to love them. Lets give some mad love to that bass and percussion section. Wow. Easy to get lulled in by the horns because they are so epic, but that percussion and bass is holding it DOWN.
Whoa! Super cool! Very funky groove, and I like how the horns augment the bassline, and it has a very calm mood to it but then the horns come in and it’s very energetic.
How impressive is it that Cory got to play Prince's instruments? This is serious cred. Oh, and from someone who saw Weather Report as a kid, this performance is impressive for its homage to the original (thanks to my horn-playing, Dave-Brubeck-sidekick dad for making me appreciate jazz). Go Jaco, wherever you are!
I love Cory, I love Vulfpeck, but I was determined to not to like this song because it seemed so unnecessary to mess with a classic. But then those horns came in… it’s such a good version. Wongnotes, you crazy sons-of-guns, you did it.
I'm normally not a fan of a horns section (just a personal preference for 1 or 2 in an ensemble don't shoot me!) but completely stopped everything to listen to this lot @2:25 - stunning, tight sound! (Plus great solos).
People who hate the idea of covers confuse me to no end... Like, do they think that a cover of a song existing makes the original version disappear? Sad 🤣
16ths on Bass, with feel and groove, equals years of commitment, study, practice, the list goes on. To stand out above a bunch of 'next level' players speaks to the level this Bass player is operating on. Forgive me for not knowing his name. The percussionist and the horn section are mind blowingly incredible and groove hard. I cannot speak higher than this, there is no words. Bless you all and keep on keeping on. Sydney, Australia, 2024
I kind of shock to learn Joe Dart didn’t write “Dean Town.” I just always assumed it was his tune. This might be the best horn section since Tower of Power.
Joe has described himself as more of a session musician during actual recording. He doesnt write a lot of his own lines or songs. Either Woody or Jack usually write his basslines (Joe then Dart-ifies it in the way only he can do)
@@mkproductions4122 They are really something for sure! If you haven’t already check out Tim Akers and the Smoking Section too. They have a video where they isolate the horns. I hope someday we get a video like that with the Hornheads. It would be great!
Love them. I recommend listening to Prince´s "Billy Jack Bitch". Michael B Nelson did a great arrangement there (actually, it´s his instrumental composition that Prince included in the end of the song)
Brother Thank You so much. You have assembled Such a great group of talented musicians. It is truly a gift to hear the Funk You guys are laying down. Yhanks again for sharing the Love
It's really hard to realize how much that auxiliary percussion does for a tune until you have it there. It's like a special sauce.
I always wish it were turned up just a hair. It really does add some seasoning though
Absolutely right. Especially when you have somebody that knows how to play percussion!
That was the sneaky great thing about Vulfpeck Live at MSG.
@@alexdrummer2175 Nêgah Santos is incredible. And such a great performer too!
Nêgah Santos 🇧🇷
This whole album is special! Waiting for Cory Wong to cover Cory Wong
It would be nice for Cory Wong to play a cover of a song he was named after
@@joshualessore7652 It would be nice for Dean Town to cover Dean Town as well.

@joshualessore7652 I can’t believe his parents named him after a Vulfpeck song

Sonny T makes this look so easy! He is a wizard!
he truly is! There rarely is that high amount of funk in a Bass solo. The whole Bass community salutes you, sonny T !
Because IT IS EASY🤷🏼♂️
I feel like a lot of the time as a bassist it can be easy to get into the mindset of overplaying and cramming in as many lines as physically possible. Sonny keeps it simple. He knows what's good, isn't afraid to repeat himself and hits the ONE every time. An absolute legend.
What Sonny does definitely ain't easy, he's just so killin! Totally agree bro
@@kntuchy I'll join that salute.
Whoever arranged the horn section absolutely slays.
That's the immortal Michael B. Nelson (the dude on trombone, arranged and wrote for The Purple One himself).
Michael Nelson! Absolutely incredible. The thought that this doesn't exist until his brain manages to think it into existence is mind blowing
@@v.k.healthlongevity9807Lol for real haha
Just realized the first horns part is from the crowd singing along during the Madison square garden version
I was thinking the same thing! Horn arrangement turns different colours and adds new flavours to an already amazing song! Baritone Sax guy sounds so incredible in the second song here.
Can we petition Michael Nelson to start a horn arranging youtube channel? These harmonies are TIGHT!!
Kudos to Vulfpeck for contributing to the jazz standards library.
Watching Sonny T play left-handed on a right-handed bass is still blowing my mind...
THAT TRIPPED THE HELL OUT OF ME!
It's actually a left-handed bass, but with the strings in right-handed order. Took me a while to figure out what's going on there.
I think my brain would just stop braining if you hand me that instrument. xD
The improvisation vocabulary from these horn players is otherworldly. Top quality playing from everyone.
There’s no improv in this what so ever
The horns are incredible on this. Mr Nelson must have relished it. Woah jam. Cory, the way you put together these amazing things for us, yet keep the focus on the other incredible musicians warms my heart.
