I love Cory, I love Vulfpeck, but I was determined to not to like this song because it seemed so unnecessary to mess with a classic. But then those horns came in… it’s such a good version. Wongnotes, you crazy sons-of-guns, you did it.
Kind of find funny given it's inspired from a classic itself.
I'm normally not a fan of a horns section (just a personal preference for 1 or 2 in an ensemble don't shoot me!) but completely stopped everything to listen to this lot @2:25 - stunning, tight sound! (Plus great solos).
being determined to not like a song is so sad
@@lily4813ds hear, hear!
People who hate the idea of covers confuse me to no end... Like, do they think that a cover of a song existing makes the original version disappear? Sad 🤣
This whole album is special! Waiting for Cory Wong to cover Cory Wong
It would be nice for Cory Wong to play a cover of a song he was named after
@@joshualessore7652 It would be nice for Dean Town to cover Dean Town as well.
@@joninawhitecoat who's dean town
@joshualessore7652 I can’t believe his parents named him after a Vulfpeck song
🤣
This is 100% my Funk-Heaven! Thank You Internet!
That horn is incredible. Oh yeah, and the wind instruments work really well on this too.
maybe the best version yet
5:08 Eddie dreamingly enjoying Cory's guitar groove. "EDDIE!" "WHUA, ER SURE" Delivers several bars of unholy saxiness.
lmao too good
that was EFFIN fantastic. thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Dale negaaaaaaah!!
Excellent horn section.
great work cory as always
Sweeeeeet!
I tought that Joe Dart is good, but maan. Sonny T played that song with so fineness. Also ampeg sound so nice in comparison to markbass. I love such full sound including deep end from fifth string :)
Peace! ❤
ok, I'll buy tickets for the boston show now
Mr sunny bad a@& T 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m sorry Joe, but this is Corey song now.
It's like vulpeck, but without the pocket
Sonny really flipped that riff on it's head.
It's really hard to realize how much that auxiliary percussion does for a tune until you have it there. It's like a special sauce.
I always wish it were turned up just a hair. It really does add some seasoning though
Absolutely right. Especially when you have somebody that knows how to play percussion!
That was the sneaky great thing about Vulfpeck Live at MSG.
@@alexdrummer2175 Nêgah Santos is incredible. And such a great performer too!
Nêgah Santos 🇧🇷
Sonny T makes this look so easy! He is a wizard!
he truly is! There rarely is that high amount of funk in a Bass solo. The whole Bass community salutes you, sonny T !
Because IT IS EASY🤷🏼♂️
I feel like a lot of the time as a bassist it can be easy to get into the mindset of overplaying and cramming in as many lines as physically possible. Sonny keeps it simple. He knows what's good, isn't afraid to repeat himself and hits the ONE every time. An absolute legend.
What Sonny does definitely ain't easy, he's just so killin! Totally agree bro
@@MRlegofreak777777 I'll join that salute.
The horns are incredible on this. Mr Nelson must have relished it. Woah jam. Cory, the way you put together these amazing things for us, yet keep the focus on the other incredible musicians warms my heart.
Very well said
Not only can you see the funk on the saxes, you can smell it too! Killer!
Amen to that! I feel like im part of something so real and fresh and just amazing. It is advancing me as a musician, just to HEAR this stuff. How classy and funky can you get. Just keep doing what you all are doing, forever and a day. So much love. ❤✌😎
Horns you mean what?
At first I was a bit skeptical with no Joe to lay down the bass, but Sonny T killed it. I love his style and the matching guitar and bass there.
although I'd begggg to see Joe and Cory tour. in due time!!
Why would u even think about doubting Sonny's skillz????
@@gregorybell705 my own ignorance! I didn’t know about him, but I sure do now. Awesome bassist!!!
100% thought it was Joe on Spotify, Sonny nailed it
@@aqualili fearless flyers my man
The drummer making the same face as Theo in the original makes me smile
Watching Sonny T play left-handed on a right-handed bass is still blowing my mind...
THAT TRIPPED THE HELL OUT OF ME!
It's actually a left-handed bass, but with the strings in right-handed order. Took me a while to figure out what's going on there.
I think my brain would just stop braining if you hand me that instrument. xD
Can we petition Michael Nelson to start a horn arranging youtube channel? These harmonies are TIGHT!!
Didn't know I needed this. Jaco-inspired tune recorded at Prince's place. Two of my favorite anythings combined. Sonny T is too good. 5 billions stars.
Also everyone in this is too good.
The planets must've aligned then - with a good amount of those 5 bln stars
Sonny Thompson being one of Prince's musical heroes, the shapes of the guitar/bass, THAT HORNS SECTION! - I would say the ghost of Prince is not far away here. Agree with the 5 billions stars!
_Paisley Park_ is the recording studio of the late Prince, and that is why Cory Wong plays the Prince signature guitar model :D
I read that it is Prince's guitar
thanks for the context, makes the whole thing seem richer and even cooler if possible!
Sonny T played with Prince!
@@SnailSlugSlut so did that horn section
Whoever arranged the horn section absolutely slays.
That's the immortal Michael B. Nelson (the dude on trombone, arranged and wrote for The Purple One himself).
Michael Nelson! Absolutely incredible. The thought that this doesn't exist until his brain manages to think it into existence is mind blowing
@@v.k.healthlongevity9807Lol for real haha
Just realized the first horns part is from the crowd singing along during the Madison square garden version
I was thinking the same thing! Horn arrangement turns different colours and adds new flavours to an already amazing song! Baritone Sax guy sounds so incredible in the second song here.
This song is so much better with a horn section.
Everything is better with a horn section.
Everything!
Yup. It's pretty much like bacon.
You want a horn section with your fries?
I didn't like the first part with horn section, but in the rest the band killed it
EDIT:I'm talking about dean town not the second song, I love dean town
This is why when I am a billionaire the first thing I'll get is a personal traveling horn section.
Bass player here...
1) you are awesome Cory
2) I love these sessions you put together. You get such great musicians
3) it's so cool how you are the band leader/guitarist, but you never make it about yourself. And yet that makes me pay attention to you because I want to see what you choose to play. You're my favorite funk/groove/rhythm guitarist.
4) keep up the great work, and never get that "real job"!
Pity I can leave just one thumb up...
The improvisation vocabulary from these horn players is otherworldly. Top quality playing from everyone.
There’s no improv in this what so ever
I kind of shock to learn Joe Dart didn’t write “Dean Town.” I just always assumed it was his tune. This might be the best horn section since Tower of Power.
I think they might be better honestly. They are standing on the shoulders of top
Joe has described himself as more of a session musician during actual recording. He doesnt write a lot of his own lines or songs. Either Woody or Jack usually write his basslines (Joe then Dart-ifies it in the way only he can do)
@@mkproductions4122 They are really something for sure! If you haven’t already check out Tim Akers and the Smoking Section too. They have a video where they isolate the horns. I hope someday we get a video like that with the Hornheads. It would be great!
Love them. I recommend listening to Prince´s "Billy Jack Bitch". Michael B Nelson did a great arrangement there (actually, it´s his instrumental composition that Prince included in the end of the song)
@@ryancoughlan7205 in fact, Joe Dart has never written a Vulfpeck song.
Sonny Thompson is a god. Groove, sound, accuracy, elegant power...this band is also perfect and this cover in the way of Prince or Funkadelic is a real masterpiece !
I like how dynamic and percussive Sonny T’s playing is on this! Gave it a unique pop
Can we please talk about how dope that drum fill at about 1:52 is? The first time I heard it I had to rewind like 5 times to hear it again and again, and I'm not even a drummer. Also those horn lines are so epic, brings this song to a whole new level of awesome.
now the metropole orchestra version to complete the saga. also kenni's smile of approval during eddies solo.
Kenni's stank face is the ULTIMATE achievement.
cory made a cover of a snarky puppy version of a vulfpeck song
Musical orgasme!!! I finally met the Divin, but I was alive!!!
Kudos to Vulfpeck for contributing to the jazz standards library.
This is the best cover of dean Town I never heard
No way its almost like one of the members of the band that created said song was behind this cover
@@maxisatube almost!
Has Sonny T always played with the bass strings "upside down"??? I'm guessing he just picked up a "regular" right-handed bass back in the day and didn't bother to switch the strings... Having said that, fantastic playing as always by everyone!!
Check this out: ruclips.net/video/rd9Q0DRjCls/видео.html
The crazy thing to me is that he plays a regular 6-string guitar the same way: ruclips.net/video/SX2jRt4ZklA/видео.html
@@thefonz4364 you don’t know what you’re talking about. Most of the guys that play lefty but strung righty are old school guys that grew up playing like that. They didn’t know how to change/flip the strings or have the resources to learn that so they just worked with what they had
MonoNeon same
If thats how you learn that's how you play. Doesnt matter too much, though I would I would imagine on bass it makes slapping (or rather the "popping" aspect of slapping) more difficult since you have to get your fingers above your thumb after slapping. Seems awkward to me, but you can get used to anything with enough practice.
For 6 string guitars I'm amazed he can play that way, since chord fingerings are all wonk, its like a completely different instrument.
I believe this is the first time I've actually seen and heard a Cloud guitar played with a totally clean tone; no gain or effects. Sounds a lot like a Stratocaster, although that shouldn't be surprising given that it has an EMG Strat pickup in the neck position. Very cool to hear. Entire band is killing TBH, and NPG bassist Sonny T's tone and chops are always on point. Respect and RIP to the Purple One.
Sonny T did a stellar job this is crazy
Well this is a bloody great start to my morning. Nicely done, Cory!
I’d love to hear a Victor Wooten version of Dean Town!
The legit FUNK machine!!! In the sacred halls of Paisley park + the original Dave Rusan "Cloud Guitar" + the infamous "Hornheads" - you can´t get any closer to the Prince vibe!
Great cover of Dean Town aside, the real treasure here for me is the jam. So simple, so funky and smooth, and those saxes are just absolute butter. Love it
I almost didn't recognize Joe Dart without sunglasses on.
The Cloud + Sonny T + Hornheadz + Paisley = Prince vibes. With the great Cory Wong.
Only thing I'd say is that it could use a big low Baratone Sax a la Tower Of Power :D
Holy hell. Horns are always a favorite of mine- amazing to hear them on this track and with the added percussion elements, YES!
Did anyone else think of TofP (Tower of Power) while listening to this terrific composition? I loved it all!
Left handed awesome drummer & left handed amazing bass player!
Don’ t tell me the sound engineer is left handed too…
OMG those horns!!!! What!!?? Such a nice touch on such a brilliant bass melody. Ohhh shit. Still getting me. Like a rocky theme song.. fuuuug. Nice one folks!!! Noiiiiice
7:30 wowww my man just went full Seinfeld!!!
Cory just casually playing the Prince Guitar without saying anything?
So…I didn’t know Sonny T until today. His bass configuration is just…mental! That guy’s brain is wired different.
Can't wait to see you guys this summer at Montreal Jazz Fest !
Good lord the saxes knocked it out of the park.
💯%amazing Cory Wong knows no bound in funk styles, Horn's pure delicious 👌
Is that really Prince's guitar or just a reproduction? If it's the real thing then Mr. Wong you are privledged AF!
Those 16ths on the bass are so even and grooving, I thought it was Rocco in his heyday.
This version really starts to shine during the breakdown! Sweet! love the extra horn harmonies
Mr. Sony T Minneapolis legend !!
Great job on bass !
Whoa, this sounded awesome. Everything you do is an inspiration for funk musicians. Thank you thank you.
the guitar does a lot for that track
Everybody gangsta till SonnyT arrives in Dean Town
bad ass groove here...damn
Legen........dary. I love this group. These are just such stone cold grooves that it is hard not to love them. Lets give some mad love to that bass and percussion section. Wow. Easy to get lulled in by the horns because they are so epic, but that percussion and bass is holding it DOWN.
Dude, horns!
Gonna have to go to the chiropractor to get my neck looked at after watching this
Another upside down backwards bass player. It’s an epidemic!
Dean Town without Joe Dart on the Joe Dart music man bass? Ohh Sonny T? Nevermind
Left handed bass and drums! .... do they make left handed saxophones too? :) music here is amazingly groovy!!! love this!
Those effortless sounding 16ths on the bass with just the right amount of grab. HNNNNNNGGGGH
Kenni Holmen is on board? Good, good.
Henry Cavill (Saxophone), Bono (Drums)
So fun....ky. looking forward to seeing you in Portland real soon. Can't wait!
It’s things like this that make me believe there needs to be a ‘Love’ Button. No amount of Likes could ever give this justice.
That was tight!
Wait! Wah on sax?? Sounds freaking Awesome!!🤘🏼
You should listen to the horn section of Snarky Puppy, Maz and Bullock in particular. Some of their instruments sound unrecognisable (in a good way!).
@@samcooke343 Or some Napoleon Murphy Brock sax solos in some Zappa tunes
Negah's smile is infectious!
So Sick! Woody Goss wrote a real banger with this one.
Whoa! Super cool! Very funky groove, and I like how the horns augment the bassline, and it has a very calm mood to it but then the horns come in and it’s very energetic.
that horn section at 2:25 is just unreal...so tight! Woooooooooooooooowwwwww - Buddy R would approve ;)
Holy s**t!!! This is something we all wanted without even know it
Hard to think this could be any tighter and funkier. Very nice
Nêgah Santoooos on percussion
So weird seeing it done with only one kit drummer and not Joe Dart on the bass
The spoils of a left-handed rhythm section
Just now discovering Vulfpeck and Fearless Flyers. Wow, just wow!
Wow! Sonny playing Dean town at Paisley Park with Cory on a cloud guitar?? DOPE!
I mean they even managed to play Dean Town without a lamp?!
For a song that features the bass, maybe turn up the mids so you can actually hear it??
..very very funkee!..let’s give the horns a little sum thin’ sum thin’ right?..Sonny T teaching the right rhythm bass stylee, not about speed licks, the feel..the feel..the Feel!!..blessings to the Mpls funkateers..shout out to Dr Mambo’s Combo!..stay strong and stay safe..New York October 30, 2021..
holy crap
tho sonny t really should have gone Full Dart with his head.
