This is the most entertaining video I’ve ever seen on RUclips. I’m grinning like I slept with a hanger in my mouth. I’ve been learning to play songs like this for 25 years. It took me several hours to figure out this bassline - but I love the teaching point about singing the notes. If you can’t find them with your voice, it’s going to be much harder to find them on your bass!

I love that there’s tab/notation with this, but I highly recommend learning it by ear first. IMO the only way to train your ear to recognize intervals and patterns is by doing it. If you just want to learn the song quickly then jump straight to the PDF, but you might be missing out on a great learning opportunity.

To be honest, you didnt struggle nearly as much as I expected, hearing those intricate lines, and the "singing before playing" advice and demonstration is GOLD to wrap your head around things. Thank you for this video.
As for an idea of what to put Scott through: Ernie Ball have this "string theory" video series inviting artists to talk and play their isolated parts. There's one with Justin Chancelor from Tool where his tone and riffs shine throughout the whole thing, but at 7:37 he plays a part of "Wings for Marie", the section on 8:56 is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful things ever written for bass, which I never before fully appreciated hearing it within the mix with the also haunting Maynard vocals on top. I wish Scott could try learning and playing the whole section for us, if you could. Thanks!

I just learned Dean Town in the last week.... one piece of advice for everyone is if you do a play along with a RUclips video, you can customize the playback speed. The preset is to 0.75 if you need to slow it down, but you can increase it in 5% increments without any change in pitch in the customization tab. I found that a huge help because the jump between 0.75 and normal is too much of a shock when you are learning it. I just went, 80, 85, 90, 95 and pretty much have it now. Its a tough tune and the ability to gradually ramp up the speed helped me a lot.

I have found over the years that when I hear an awesome bass line, if I don't HAVE to learn it, I won't, as it often takes away the enjoyment of listening to the original.
If I was going to learn it, I'd put the song through a piece of software I bought called Moises. Separate the bass line, then slow it down. Whether or not my fingers do their job is another matter. Love to all x

I learned how to play Dean Town by ear using a YT video, cutting it in to 6 fragments and played along with each segment on 75% speed until I got it right. Then practiced the whole thing on 75% for a while an then on 100% speed which is considerably more difficult (for me) but I got there in the end. It took me a while though, it's pretty tough. I use the DT lick as a warmup routine now ;-)

IMA is a BEAST!!!! It would be cool to see him take on "Let the Praise Begin" By Fred Hammond (Christian bass player/singer) since that is WAY outside his wheelhouse lol. This was beyond cool.

Hey, Ian and Scott! Great job, congrats! The only thing I would have done differently was trying to play each part slowly before attempting to play with the track. This is important, because the anxiety might destroy the fun that' is supposed to happen throughout the process!

Good for you, Ian-impressive. I find the 16th-notes section is more challenging than the main section.
