  • St Paul's Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today's Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul's Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The catacombs were eventually abandoned and the site fell into disrepair. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A.Caruana, who was a pioneer of Christian era archaeology. The catacombs are now managed by Heritage Malta. In the following video I visit the largest catacomb on the island which covers more than 2000 square metres and was home to at least 420 burials. St Paul’s Catacombs are located just a few meters away from St Paul’s parish church in Rabat. The church is dedicated to Saint Paul because it is said that when St Paul was shipwrecked on the island he preached and stayed in an underground cave below which is also known as “St Paul’s Grotto”. Another complex of subterranean catacombs are also located here and a further level down are the old underground World War 2 air raid shelters. In the catacombs below St Paul's Church I caught a clear disembodied voice on my audio. I was exploring alone and there was no one in close proximity to me at the time.

Incredible place to visit, also the underground tunnels in Valetta make an interesting tour. Malta was the most bombed country in ww2, the history and connection with the UK is amazing.

Thanks 🙂 - yes it was heavily targeted during World War 2 because of its location and links to the UK but amazingly for such a tiny island it was never invaded - loads to explore and a very historic place - lots of folklore - it is also rumoured to have a hidden underworld where giants live!
