  • Grade One Listed St Bartholomew's is a grand perpendicular church. The tall tower stands proud across the landscape. Constructed between 1370 and 1460 it is located in the small village of Brisley which is located between Dereham and Fakenham. The crypt under the chancel still has its original medieval door. Behind this old oak door are some stone steps to the chamber below. The crypt is thought originally to have been used as a charnel house to store bones. In the 19th century dangerous prisoners from King’s Lynn were lodged in the crypt overnight before being escorted by foot to the gallows of Norwich Castle. It has been suggested that the crypt may date from the Saxon church which is believed to have stood where the chancel stands today. If what has been theorised is correct this crypt would be one of very few remaining under a medieval church originating from Saxon times.

Thanks Peter - it is a really fascinating church and quite rare to be able to gain access to a crypt these days - open daily along with the church 🙂

Thank-you for commenting - it is quite rare to be able to gain access into a church crypt these days and this specific one has quite a dark history

Hi Carrie - this church is rare in the fact you are allowed to explore the crypt below - most these days are blocked off or locked down completely which is understandable of course but this was a real experience especially given the history

What a really interesting church and the small room used for prisoners is quite chilling. Thanks again for finding another gem . May well take a look ourselves one day.

Thank-you - you should definitely visit - the first time I visited the crypt was dusk one evening with failing light and when I reached the bottom of the steps my torch all of a sudden went dead so I was left in complete darkness. The torch was fully charged earlier that day and it was the first time I used it. It was quite a strange and unsettling experience. It is widely theorised in paranormal circles this could be a sign spirit is drawing energy in an attempt of direct communication - however I heard no voices but exited the crypt rather hastily. After this I left the phone camera running in the crypt and turned the lights on - meanwhile I sat in silence in the church - I thought this was worthwhile after the torch incident just to see if anything would show on camera or if I could capture any movements / voices in the crypt but on playback there was nothing to be seen or heard. Definitely worthy of an investigation though
