    I regularly walk by the Black Tower when going into Norwich - it's stunning. I don't think too many Norwich folks know about this part of the city!

      Yes it’s a well kept secret - so quiet down there and beautifully preserved. Hopefully will continue to be protected for generations to come. Love the city walls, so much history. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 😊

      Thanks a lot for the comment guys 😊 - the old medieval structures really were built to last - unlike many of the modern buildings today

      Hi Em and Stu, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. So pleased this part of the city wall has been protected and beautifully preserved. Very rarely visited too and so quiet. You should both take a trip you wouldn’t fail to be impressed - good exercise too with all the steps 😀

      Thanks Leslie - the most dramatic remaining section of the old city walls - very quiet and seldom visited it seems 🙂

    All my life i have lived in norwich bit never seen this....i live very near to the tower on the corner of silver road. When my husband i and went to the "cow towe"r at the riverside he took a pic of me standing against the gate and after we saw a
    strange green light within the tower on the picture that wasnt there when we stood there...id love to see the one at Carrow Hill. I think they hold energy.

      Hi Linda - this remaining section of the old city wall near Carrow Hill is quite spectacular. Cow Tower is part of the Norwich ghost walks and being so close to the historic Bishop Bridge it’s not surprising there is activity around there. The restaurant Zac’s (which used to be a morgue) just over the river is supposed to be very haunted too. There have been reports of a ghostly lady walking the walls near to the black tower wearing a medieval style shawl.

      Hi Naomi, lovely area around Carrow Hill, so well preserved and quiet too considering it’s based so close to the city centre.

    Excellent video, would have liked to know who the enemies were for whom the walls and tower were built.

      Hi Bob thanks for your complimentary comments. One of the main catalysts for an improvement in terms of defence likely came from an event which took place in 1266. A group of nobles from the Isle of Ely took Norwich by force during the Second Baron’s War. During the rampage it’s reported they “plundered its wealth and robbed, killed or imprisoned many of the richest townspeople”. In the aftermath of this Norwich felt vulnerable to attack and better defences were deemed necessary. The first stages of constructing the city walls happened soon after this event in 1294.

    I discovered this walk way back in 1978 when I was an art student in Norwich, It was much more overgrown then, with no walkways or easy access steps, which made it all the more mysterious and fascinating . If a place is too accessible it loses some of it's mystique.

    • @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk  3 года назад

      Hi Anton, that must have been amazing - if a location is more overgrown and not easily accessible it does add to this mystery I agree - almost like you are the first person to stumble across it. Did you gain access to the tower back then? I bet you probably did - must have been awesome 😊

      Thanks - I’ve got a lot more Norwich posts to come as well as other places in Norfolk - they are stacking up now - it’s the editing that takes the time - but complimentary comments such as yours make it feel worthwhile 😊
