There are a lot of little things like this that really need to be fixed, little bugs and problems that have been in the game for YEARS now that ruin playthroughs. It's why HOI4 needs a custodian team like Stellaris has IMO, to fix and add small patches to the old DLCs that barely work anymore. Off the top of my head; Ottoman empire cores are janky, Kuwait is considered part of "French Syria" despite being British and not Syrian. Alexandria is not cored by the Egyptian cores decision. If you play disunited Yugoslavia and sign the tripartite act, you get a "civil war" that takes over your entire country instantly and ends the game, have yet to find a way around it. The entire Spanish civil war barely functions since NSB, alt history Spanish paths are nearly impossible now Bulgaria's "predetermined territorial claims" being granted to them by a puppet German government, or losing your puppets lands to a free Bulgaria without any choice India can wind up in a situation where they have a civil war and 'Free india' is in the Allies while 'Dominion of India' is not...still not sure what exactly causes that. TFV focuses in general are just abysmal now and often times worse than just playing with default trees. And of course; Franco British union being an instant 'lose the game' button. Supposedly made for the AI to take in Ahistorical mode but I haven't seen them take the option since MTG...

@@melfice999 I puppeted Turkey as the Soviets once, then they formed a faction with Iraq and Italy later in the game (while still being my puppet). A communist puppet stole Fascist Italy from Germany and nobody in that world cared.

The Continue The Fight Option is actually okay, Germany can't Form Vichy and you Lose all Mainland France but you Keep The Focus Tree and all Oversea Colonies. Capital is in Algeria so it's a little more fun to Play🤭

If you have over 70% war support as France after the fall of Paris, you get that bottom option, "Continue the Fight!" It denies the "Triumph in France" event for Germany, preventing them from forming Vichy.
It really annoys me that in the vast majority of my games Vichy France is never returned in the peacedeal because it counts as a seperate country. So it's up for the grabs in the peacedeal so you get disgusting situations of the UK having half of France, i make a point now to use my own damn war participation to give back the Vichy lands back to France because i refuse to have British Occitania in my games.
The new peace deal system in BBA should hopefully cut down on this, since France can now at least contest claims on its own country by Britain/US/Soviets. No more cases of them just getting annexed before they even get a turn because the UK got 3 armies sunk in the med and therefor has 80% war participation.
I actually live in New Caledonia and I have no clue why It would be Free France's capital, however it was one of the most important ports in the pacific and over 1million Americans went through new caldonia during ww2
When France capitulated in ww2 France’s African colonies stayed loyal to Petain and only France’s pacific, Indian and equatorial African possessions (Congo, CAR and Chad😎) joined free France, but not in HOI4. In our timeline the free French government was based in London, However HOI4 does not simulate this so the capital moves to the largest city in the country which since the African possessions were very underdeveloped at the time is Noumea. Only after the recapture of Africa did the free French government move to Algiers making it the capital of free France

Free France should receive shorter focuses. All of them are 70 days long and you will return to the normal French tree, so you won't finish focuses in time to count
It's because paradox doesn't give a shit about france in this game, they make free netherlands, poland and soon fucking ethiopia of all things more fun to play but since france has to die for the game to work (because god forbid actually being allowed to fix the issues France had historically in a sandbox game and then actually successfully holding the germans off like they almost did IRL) otherwise the werhaboos will cry about how germany can't kill France in a single day.
Just a tip, when grouping ships, like you do at around 6:30, you can shift click the anchors to the left instead of individually selecting every ship group, reducing 30 clicks to about 6.
As a french seeing that inaccuracy for Free France territories, border gore from getting back our OWN territories (and in general) + the low factories in 39, it gives me a heart attacc
This is what I mean when I say that after By Blood Alone, paradox needs to chill down a while and correct everything with the game. We have shit old trees like france, the commonwealth and china, we have old but reasonably decent trees that could use some tweaks like the US, the UK, maybe Japan and a few very good trees like the USSR, the netherlands, maybe spain and turkey. I mean, the ussr has a 70 day focus that gives you 10 military factories. They have a 35day focus that gives you an extra operative slot and allows you to assassinate trotsky, which gives you 15% stability once done. France has 70day focus that tives you some compliance in the colonies. Playing the soviets and france feels like playing different games, playing france feels like playing hoi3
La Resistance is not that old, Frances tree is vastly newer than Germany, Japan, USA, UK. Can 100% agree they need to fix the commonwealth trees, Together for Victory is so much lower standard of trees compared to even Death or Dishonour

While they're grouped with New Caledonia in this, the group of islands to the right of New Caledonia at 1:23 were called the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). It was a condominium between the British and the French. This resulted in two different communities formed where one is Anglophone while the other is Francophone (a divide that still exists). This also resulted in two different governments to rule their respective communities. A partially elected joint administration became a thing in 1975 until they got their independence in 1980 and they now have a single parliament

@@delta2372 As I see it, Free and Vichy France having 23-24 focuses is probably due to the fact that after France capitulates, you're not gonna care about what ideology you are, or developing colonies (these 2 are a massive part of the French focus tree), you're only gonna care about getting your country back.

in the multiplayer mods some RUclipsrs play the amount of colonies free France gets is determined by their war participation points before the capitulation so you can get all the colonies by simply throwing all your troops at Germans
He did. I remember him playing for the Bevrijding achievement a while back. And since he's actually Belgian from Flanders, he actually pronounced Bevrijding correctly. Everyone else either butchers it or doesn't pronounce it lol (except maybe Antasil who actually is Dutch)

Something I discovered in my own Free France playthrough, if you use the legitamacy decisions to take over a colonial area(like Algeria for example) then release Tahiti, your supply capital will be moved to Algeria
@Bitt3rSteel In the intro/build up phase you forgot the French have an island off the coast of Canada by Labrador and Newfoundland that has a few build slots. Just thought you should know since in my opinion every factory helps.
You can keep all your divisions when capitulating by giving them as expeditionary forces to an ally like britain, and then immiedetely recalling them after you capitulate (because when you send them they now count as british divisions, that means they dont get deleted)
Bitter, I have to fucking thank you. I bought HoI4 just today, and as every reasonable player does I did the tutorial. Still, I was confused about some menus, pages and options, until I found out you did a player guide, and now I know how to decently play. Thank you for your tutorial. Ps. I had an MP game with a first time player on france (it was just me and him, i was Britain.), and he got so foolhardy about winning, lost immeadietly, played as Free-France, and sent his men to fight in the meatgrinder of Taranto while i sat and liberated his country without him noticing.
I had pretty much the opposite experience I was playing as France to challenge myself, he was playing Britain so that he's somewhat safe but can still participate in the war in a meaningfull manner (to be fair, it wasnt his first ever rodeo, but still sub 50 hours). I was holding the Germans back in the north and Maginot, was moving into Italy. Meanwhile he was hyperfocusing on something extremely unrelated, while i was pleading for him to arrive in Italy ASAP, as i was being overrun from the Tyrol front. As a sidenote, i was literally at the gates of rome at this point. He just goes "No i cant, africa is more important". Suffice to say, i had to retreat out of there, cost me a massive amount of equipment, which caused me to slowly loose against the Axis. Once i had to surrender, he rubbed it into my nose how he was oh so much better than me since he didnt crumble and needed help (i counter pushed italy from tunisia while they were starting to gobble up egypt, so much for that). Once i did crumble, he lost the will to keep fighting since he was now also facing the masses of Germans.

Been trying to do the Little Entente achievement and whoo buddy you remember how annoying it is doing exclusively 70 day focuses. By the time you get to the damn necessary focuses Germany comes knocking.
I’m pretty sure Appeal To Overseas Territories gets them Equatorial Africa (the part that declared for Free France in I believe September 1940) more likely than other colonies
The mechanics of Free and Vichy France in the game are really stupid. It is an heritage of something that was unique when HOI4 first released, but that should have been reworked and combined with the collab government and exile government mechanics (from La Résistance iirc ?). I don't know why they didn't do it. Those two nations basically begged to be integrated this way.
P.S.A You can with ease survive as france in the 1939 start date in singleplayer. Here is the strat (yes, its absurd, it would not work irl) 1. Assign whatever cheif of army / advisors you want. Dont revoke maginot agreements, you need the stability. You should also hire Georges Bonnet for stability. 2. Organize the army. No port garrisons. 1 div in corsica. 6 divs in Algeria against italy (fallback line near your supply). 12 infantry / mountaineers on italian border. Italian ai wont bream your lines. Make a fallback line so you dodge the bad supply region in the north. 12 on the maginot. No one getting trough that river and fort. The tanks? Delete the tank only template or add motorized to it. Your choice. Whatevers left, infantry, make it "Division coloniale" if you dont have the artillery for the other one, and set a fallback line on belgian border. Not givinf away any land. Fortify it to level 3 if you feel the need to. Otherwise, make mills. 3. Set everything you get on GUNS. Whe the war starts, join ASAP. Do "emergency factory conversion". Once Germany reaches you, delete the fallback line and shuffle troops in where you are losing. After the initial shock is over, make AA or fighters. Your choice. Hell, do both. Clump your navy up and set it on strike force on the med. No one is naval invafing you. 4. You survived, germany has bled itself on your border. Now what? Well, a long, painful push. Typically, germany aint gonna invade the ussr with you left alive. Naval invade sicily, work your way north. Then push into belgium, the netherlands, germany itself. Will take a WHILE. The soviets may join in 44' to help out. 5. Did you enjoy it? I certainly did not. Its ww1 repeated.
Wow, i wonder now if France had actually had competent leadership and chose to fight on side by side with the Allies with singular aim of liberating their country and driving on to the final victory over Germany. If they had been there to secure North Africa, Lead the charge on D-Day to liberate their country. While the germans were still bogged down in the Soviet Union, We could have landed in Europe by late 1942 or even 1943, and drive the Germans back much in the same way as shown here thereby also saving much of eastern Europe and Poland from Soviet occupation. Imagine how different the world couldve been... How different the world could've been if France had actually been worthy of the title bestowed on them...a true leader, a true Great Power of the West.

Something I discovered in my own Free France playthrough, if you use the legitamacy decisions to take over a colonial area(like Algeria for example) then release Tahiti, your supply capital will be moved to Algeria

In the intro/build up phase you forgot the French have an island off the coast of Canada by Labrador and Newfoundland that has a few build slots. Just thought you should know since in my opinion every factory helps.
You can keep all your divisions when capitulating by giving them as expeditionary forces to an ally like britain, and then immiedetely recalling them after you capitulate
(because when you send them they now count as british divisions, that means they dont get deleted)
Bitter, I have to fucking thank you. I bought HoI4 just today, and as every reasonable player does I did the tutorial. Still, I was confused about some menus, pages and options, until I found out you did a player guide, and now I know how to decently play. Thank you for your tutorial.

I’m actually from New Caledonia and it was an important place for US army during the WW2, when it was fighting Japan
I had an MP game with a first time player on france (it was just me and him, i was Britain.), and he got so foolhardy about winning, lost immeadietly, played as Free-France, and sent his men to fight in the meatgrinder of Taranto while i sat and liberated his country without him noticing.
I had pretty much the opposite experience
I was playing as France to challenge myself, he was playing Britain so that he's somewhat safe but can still participate in the war in a meaningfull manner (to be fair, it wasnt his first ever rodeo, but still sub 50 hours).
I was holding the Germans back in the north and Maginot, was moving into Italy. Meanwhile he was hyperfocusing on something extremely unrelated, while i was pleading for him to arrive in Italy ASAP, as i was being overrun from the Tyrol front. As a sidenote, i was literally at the gates of rome at this point. He just goes "No i cant, africa is more important". Suffice to say, i had to retreat out of there, cost me a massive amount of equipment, which caused me to slowly loose against the Axis. Once i had to surrender, he rubbed it into my nose how he was oh so much better than me since he didnt crumble and needed help (i counter pushed italy from tunisia while they were starting to gobble up egypt, so much for that).
Once i did crumble, he lost the will to keep fighting since he was now also facing the masses of Germans.
When releasin Vietnam/Cambodia, you could have used a template from them which is made up of their manpower for the most part

I'm pretty sure the option at the bottom lets you stay as regular france, that might change whether or not you get africa and other colonies

Been trying to do the Little Entente achievement and whoo buddy you remember how annoying it is doing exclusively 70 day focuses. By the time you get to the damn necessary focuses Germany comes knocking.

The mechanics of Free and Vichy France in the game are really stupid. It is an heritage of something that was unique when HOI4 first released, but that should have been reworked and combined with the collab government and exile government mechanics (from La Résistance iirc ?). I don't know why they didn't do it. Those two nations basically begged to be integrated this way.
for those wondering, doing the "continue the fight" option just lets you be france but you can keep the vichy stuff

You can with ease survive as france in the 1939 start date in singleplayer.
Here is the strat (yes, its absurd, it would not work irl)
1. Assign whatever cheif of army / advisors you want. Dont revoke maginot agreements, you need the stability. You should also hire Georges Bonnet for stability.
2. Organize the army. No port garrisons. 1 div in corsica. 6 divs in Algeria against italy (fallback line near your supply). 12 infantry / mountaineers on italian border. Italian ai wont bream your lines. Make a fallback line so you dodge the bad supply region in the north. 12 on the maginot. No one getting trough that river and fort. The tanks? Delete the tank only template or add motorized to it. Your choice. Whatevers left, infantry, make it "Division coloniale" if you dont have the artillery for the other one, and set a fallback line on belgian border. Not givinf away any land. Fortify it to level 3 if you feel the need to. Otherwise, make mills.
3. Set everything you get on GUNS. Whe the war starts, join ASAP. Do "emergency factory conversion". Once Germany reaches you, delete the fallback line and shuffle troops in where you are losing. After the initial shock is over, make AA or fighters. Your choice. Hell, do both.
Clump your navy up and set it on strike force on the med. No one is naval invafing you.
4. You survived, germany has bled itself on your border. Now what? Well, a long, painful push. Typically, germany aint gonna invade the ussr with you left alive. Naval invade sicily, work your way north. Then push into belgium, the netherlands, germany itself. Will take a WHILE. The soviets may join in 44' to help out.
5. Did you enjoy it? I certainly did not. Its ww1 repeated.
