  • In this chapter, Richard and Patrick start their daunting task of walking and paddling across Papua New Guinea. Their 40kg backpacks hinder their progress, as they tackle river crossings, thick undergrowth, and incessant insects and leeches.
The bush tracks slowly disappear as they walk deeper into the jungle, so a radical decision is made. They opt to put together a raft from materials they source from the jungle, i.e. logs and vines.
On the way they meet locals that hunt with bows & arrows, and who live off the land.

I was in PNG for 2 years - and it was the leaches on the mountains that I hated! I've never seen so many leaches! The people told me "i gat sino long antap" (there's "snow" -fog- on on top of the mountains) The people were good, very friendly, for the most part. Good memories! I lived by myself in the swamps along the Ramu River for months - at one time I took a boat from Madang, heading to Long Island. Starting out, there were huge waves! About 6 hours out, the engine quit. They asked me if they could use my queen size bed sheet for a sail. We drifted off the coast, out of sight of land for a day and a half. I asked "How do you know where land is?" They told me, See those clouds? The clouds bank up - that's where land is! One of the ladies (there were 10 of us on this old boat from WW2, she had brought a torch (flashlight). When the boat was at the top of a wave, we'd look for the light of any ship passing by, and we'd blink the torch on and off to signal them. Finally, one ship picked us up, and brought back to Madang, where I started. Later, I took a ferry to New Britain province. Great time, except for the malaria I got! Thanks for sharing!

I'm a Kiwi (NZ) tramper, and NANA and I have such huge respect for you guys doing this! 😍🌿🙆🏻‍♀️
I have known plenty about PNG all my life because many of my friends have lived up there as missionaries over the last 60+ years.
My Nana's old treadle sewing machine went up there in the 1960s for locals to sew without power. ❤️
I have only just come across your channel and I'm hooked! Well done - great adventure, great videography and fantastic narration. ❤️

PNG is not an Island. It has a land border with Irian Jaya (West Papua).
