I grew up in PNG and still speak Tok Pisin fluently...I did the Kokoda twice during high school there, once flying in like you and walking back and then also going the other way from Sogeri to Kokoda. Back then no porters and no commercialism...we carried our own packs and just had one guide. If you get back, do the Yongai to Woitape trek, climbing Mt Albert Edward along the way...beautiful scenery...great memories from PNG, beautiful people and beautiful country. Then go to New Ireland, hire a bicycle and cycle down the Boluminski Highway, just to see a beautiful island and stop at the villages along the way..chew some buai lol.

@@thvtsydneylyf3th077 Hi mate, yeh a few times but not since 2010. Went up there to help my Dad pack up before he moved to Australia for health reasons. Awesome country and 99% of the people are just humble and good hearted. The cities give the place a bad name and the raskols, but the rest stunning and pure beauty, especially love the Highlands and the mountains and rivers.

Your truly are a genuine guy. Other tourists, travelers or visitors etc.. should learn from you by mingling with the locals and have personal experience of the culture and people by physically living with them like u did. Instead, they stay in hotels in the city and make up all sorts of negetive stories about this beautiful country. There's more this country has to offer if they would only pick up their lazy butts and get out of the hotel rooms to experience other parts of PNG. Well done and keep up the good work your doing..

The western highlands of Papua New Guinea is one of if not the THE wetest part of the planet. In some of those parts it rains 365 days a year. When I hiked there I soon dispensed of my shoes, for several reasons. One, they held the moisture against your feet and you would get jungle rot and fungus. 2, leeches liked to go down underneath your socks, but if you are barefoot, the plants and the water brushes them off 3, the treads of boots just fill up with mud and become smooth and slippery so you have no traction. But with bare feet, when climbing up the muddy trails, you learn to dig your big toe into the mud to pull yourself up. 4, you have to cross a lot of streams. With shoes on it's harder to feel where to step. Some rocks are much slipperier than others. I like to feel around with bare feet for the best next foothold. I ended up having to help the locals across a river one by one holding their hand, because I was much taller, and they would be swept away without me. I am tall and thin, and sideways against the current I was not as much of a resistance.

Hiked the Komodo in 1982…… just two of us with no guides. Not many people doing the track in 1982.

Great video. I liked it a lot, and I subscribed. I once heard that one could see butterflies the size of dinner plates in PNG, and I was sold on it right then and there. I love sugar gliders, and there are native sugar gliders there...I would so much like to see a sugar glider in the wild. If I die without going there, I will die with regrets.
But I have a question, and I like to pose this question to adventuresome travelers in general. This video was made four years ago, but today PNG is rated as US State Department Level 3 reconsider travel. It was likely rated the same when you visited. Port Moresby and Southern Bougainville are particular hot spots. So from your experience would you recommend people to reconsider travel to PNG (in general or to specific spots)?
