I’d often wondered that I might accidentally stumble across him one day, and never pretend to understand his creations but still be very grateful that what he produced was inspiring, ahead of its time and touched me in a way that I cannot explain. Yes! I worked in a club called Fahrenheit 101 in college from Thursday - Sunday. My shift was 9-2am. Alcohol had to be pulled at 2 but after house went on til 5am. Thursday felt like OMG let's GO! Friday & Saturday were off the chain hype! Sunday were the true partiers who wanted their last call for hearing the DJ spin & getting their groove on! Let's face it, we were all drenched in sweat with the smell of Drakkar in the air. 🤣
I was a teenager in the 80s and we definitely lived through this! These were the songs on the radio and the LPs (and then CDs) we bought. I always regretted not growing in the 60s but the 80s were fun too… you would’ve liked it.
I was 17 in 1984 and the music was far better than what passes for music now. The 80’s were a much better time (the weed was fantastic and everywhere), but the most of the hairstyles and clothes were absolutely hideous.
I was like that in the '80s, too. As an '80s teen I wished I could have grown up listening to groups like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Association, and The Mamas and the Papas, but now I wish I had really appreciated what we had a little more than I did. I really took the amazing music we had back in the '80s for granted.

I’d say from 1981 to maybe 1987 each week it seemed there were class tunes such as this being released. We truly were spoiled. Then it became cool in the 90’s & 00’s to dismiss the 80’s - I think primarily from an album point of view but that’s all in the past now & it’s great to see the young ones today appreciating the great music we had in the 80’s Btw- Lex is absolute joy, Brads a very lucky boy indeedy.

Recommendation to track down Talk Talk Live at Montreux, Mark Hollis' intensity shines like a beacon. It became even more powerful when I heard of his passing. I still think we missed so much when Hollis retired so early.

For instance, I grew up in the 70's and 80's and I never set foot into a dance club. I grew up, like a lot of Midwestern kids, during this time and these songs conjure a lot of memories with friends, at the swimming pool, at school, at work and at home.

They started off in the beginning of the eighties making great pop rock songs, and on the last two albums switched to more ambient post-rock type songwriting. Great band, haven't made a bad record and ended up being incredibly influential.
In 1984 it was impossible to avoid hearing this song everywhere, and the video was on MTV all the time. This was back when MTV stood for “Music Tele Vision” and they played music videos and concerts 24/7.
I like your interpretation of the animals in the music video as being free, like how the singer wants to be. Adding to that, I also interpret the animals' significance in that there is a huge variety of species, just like how there is a huge variety of people. When someone tries to tell you how to live your life, you need to remind them that it is YOUR life, not theirs. A squid should not be trying to control the actions of zebra, for it will drown, and a rhino should not try to control the actions of an eagle, for it will clip its wings. People, just like animals, need to embrace what is unique about ourselves and live the way that we know how to live.
It’s freedom vs captivity. How we may feel in a relationship as captive. The video was a different (and sad) play on people holding animals captive vs them being free to live their life. Like the song says… What good do we do?

A great song. One of my favorites. In the 80's the world was limitless. The creation of the personal computer, Beepers/cell phones, new sound of music from punk rock to new wave/alternative rock. The birth of hip hop/rap music. It was today but in the simplest form.
When you picture the 80s, give a thought to the cats whose parents couldn't afford cable for MTV, and spent their time after school listening to the radio on their tiny boom boxes with double cassette recorders, just waiting for the right song to come on. Hitting record fast enough to not cut off the first good bits required both talent and luck. Mostly luck.
Their third album, The Colour Of Spring, is one of my faves. Some of Mark's best writing. I can still listen to it on repeat. Life's What You Make It will always be my #1 from this band. Such a cool groove. RIP Mr. Hollis. ✌️

What the song is about: "Over the years, many have postulated that Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life” is about a man in a relationship with an unfaithful partner whom he is well aware cheats on him. And although the lyrics are quite-ambiguous, that seems for the most part to be correct. The main character (the singer) is “in love” with someone whom he is seemingly ‘blinding himself’ to what she is actually doing. And apparently she is not faithful - either that or doing something else which greatly upsets him and indeed makes him feel like a ‘loser.' And that brings us to the title of the song. Upon realizing the aforementioned, the singer asserts that “it’s (his) life”. He seems to be doing so in defiance, as a statement of refusing to terminate a relationship with someone whom he probably should. So the primary sentiments expressed through the song seem to be tantamount to the singer declaring his right to live his life the way he chooses while simultaneously lamenting about the trouble which is ever present therein." I like your interpretation of the animals in the music video as being free, like how the singer wants to be. Adding to that, I also interpret the animals' significance in that there is a huge variety of species, just like how there is a huge variety of people. When someone tries to tell you how to live your life, you need to remind them that it is YOUR life, not theirs. A squid should not be trying to control the actions of zebra, for it will drown, and a rhino should not try to control the actions of an eagle, for it will clip its wings. People, just like animals, need to embrace what is unique about ourselves and live the way that we know how to live.
It’s freedom vs captivity. How we may feel in a relationship as captive. The video was a different (and sad) play on people holding animals captive vs them being free to live their life. Like the song says… What good do we do?

Talk Talk's Pop hits are great but their real musical masterpieces are the 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' albums. Mark Hollis RIP. Much missed.
Both of those albums are underappreciated masterpieces. I really with they would both get new remastered and extended releases.

A great song. One of my favorites. In the 80's the world was limitless. The creation of the personal computer, Beepers/cell phones, new sound of music from punk rock to new wave/alternative rock. The birth of hip hop/rap music. It was today but in the simplest form.
When you picture the 80s, give a thought to the cats whose parents couldn't afford cable for MTV, and spent their time after school listening to the radio on their tiny boom boxes with double cassette recorders, just waiting for the right song to come on. Hitting record fast enough to not cut off the first good bits required both talent and luck. Mostly luck.

Their third album, The Colour Of Spring, is one of my faves. Some of Mark's best writing. I can still listen to it on repeat. Life's What You Make It will always be my #1 from this band. Such a cool groove. RIP Mr. Hollis. ✌️

I dunno. This was my era. I forgot how wonderful British New Wave pop was. This was the era of these wonderful movies. I'm so glad I was during this period.
The guy in the video is the singer. His name is Mark Hollis (RIP) and has one of the most unique and haunting voices. Their song, Renee, really showcases his haunting voice.
What the song is about:
"Over the years, many have postulated that Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life” is about a man in a relationship with an unfaithful partner whom he is well aware cheats on him. And although the lyrics are quite-ambiguous, that seems for the most part to be correct. The main character (the singer) is “in love” with someone whom he is seemingly ‘blinding himself’ to what she is actually doing. And apparently she is not faithful - either that or doing something else which greatly upsets him and indeed makes him feel like a ‘loser.'
And that brings us to the title of the song. Upon realizing the aforementioned, the singer asserts that “it’s (his) life”. He seems to be doing so in defiance, as a statement of refusing to terminate a relationship with someone whom he probably should. So the primary sentiments expressed through the song seem to be tantamount to the singer declaring his right to live his life the way he chooses while simultaneously lamenting about the trouble which is ever present therein."
