This song always gave me chills, the great sound and unique voice of the late Mark David Hollis and the playing from the band TALK TALK. If you ever want to see perfection of this song live check out { Live at Montreux 1986} Great band from the 80's. Other songs by them you might enjoy is LIFE'S WHAT YOU MAKE IT and SUCH A SHAME. RIP Mark, we miss you. Great pick Harri.

This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this song lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY and those aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous recording does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."

Underrated bands don't have a string of international hits. Besides, the music critics also appreciated the band. They could/should have had wider appreciation, but Mark Hollis' creative evolution (evidenced by the HUGE difference between "The Party's Over" and "Laughing Stock") was also commercial suicide. The latter is supposedly THE album (or one of them) that led to the creation of Stoner Rock.

This is Talk Talk at the backend of their synth pop period. Although the album of the same name is a step up from their debut, it was 'The Colour Of Spring' release two years later, where it all starts to become more organic and acoustic based. After that, in '88, they did the most incredible thing by inventing a genre known as Post Rock on the remarkable 'Spirit Of Eden' album. Selling next to nothing, and resulting in a court battle that they won, it was essentially a two finger salute to EMI, who got rid of the band! Signing to the jazz label Verve, they released one more album called 'Laughing Stock', which was even more experimental and improvisatory than the last, and yet filled with ambience, jazz and chamber music, which five years earlier could never have been imagined! Lead man and writer, Mark Hollis retired from the music industry, before returning in 91, with a self titled album that was as minimal and in thrall to silence as was possible. Sadly, Mark Hollis died in 2019, at the age of 64, but as the years pass, his legacy grows, and more people are finding the magic of that remarkable five year period, where Hollis and Talk Talk changed the musical climate for later fellow adventurers to take the baton and run with it!

Hello Besties. The bass line sounds incredibly similar to a song The Walker Brothers released in 1978 called Nite Flights. The Walker Brothers label Phillips was going out of business and they owed Phillips one last record. The executive at Phillips said you guys can do whatever the hell you want to as we are not of the record business. And they did. The album was said to have a profound effect on Roxy Music and Talking Heads and evidently Bryan Ferry and the lads in Talk Talk. According to Gary Leeds Walker Nite Flights only sold about 2000 albums. Later David Bowie would cover Nite Flights. You might play The Walker Brothers version from 1978 and let your listeners decide whether Talk Talk ripped off errrrr borrowed that bass line from Nite Flight’s.

Without exploring the music of Talk Talk, you will never truly hear how far the art in music can really go. This is not just fan blab, it's fact. If you're new to it, start with the album The Colour Of Spring then move on to their others. Their music is loved and studied by music artists worldwide. The songs you have heard that were their popular, radio friendly hits, are songs they didn't even want to do and were still perfect.

It's My Life came out a couple of years before Don't Stop the Dance...just sayin'. 😊 I think Happiness is Easy or Life's What You Make It should be your next Talk Talk songs. They are a wonderful band and in my view Mark Hollis was a bit of genius.

The No Doubt version was a sad disapointment for me.That cover is just about HUMANS. The whole idea of the song was, that us humans are not alone on this planet. We DO have company. And we are not the owners. We are the visitors. And one day, we will be gone and life goes on. Business as usual, as us humans would say. And the rest of the world would add: The show must go on...OR: Time is not money. Time is ONLY what we have left..

He and his trained ear obviously didn't get trained properly if he can't appreciate musical excellence .. Cheers, Wayne

@@wayne_twentyfive Bullfucking shit. The No Doubt version was an unnecessary disaster hit. Corporate Anaheim Dickheads already riding the top of the charts didn't feel like writing another song while their leader made a solo record and started her "acting" career, so they spun the dial and decided to shit all over this masterpiece. At least the first time I heard that version was over the speakers in a lousy Von's meat department, which is where it should remain forever.

I first heard this track on my daughter’s No Doubt CD. Loved it straight away. Later found this original and there’s really not much to choose between them. Perhaps I too have an “untrained ear”. Some people are just rude.
