'No Doubt' made their version, but their music video didn't have any impact on me. I like No Doubt to a certain degree, but I hated them making a cover of this song and turning it into a human dilemma.. and you might have guessed it by now, Talk Talk is always gonna be my Number one.
I loved everything about Mark Hollis; his voice, his attitude to music & his individuality. Always his own man. R.I.P. Mark. His passing made me unutterably sad.
If Mark Hollis's Vibrato doesn't send a shiver up your spine, you're listening to him wrong. Talk Talk - Lifes what you make it, is another great song .
Yes, you’re right, the band are English. Unfortunately the lead singer died in 2019 aged just 64. Love this song so much. Great reaction video as always 😊
This is one of my fave hits of the 80's. Not a super flashy, edgy, or super catchy but something about the song is mysterious and it creates a captivating mood.
I enjoy Gwen’s cover version and I was so impressed when she chose to record it. All respect and love to her, but, I love the original SO much and it’s amazing to me that I personally still get so moved by the beauty of the song as much as I did when it was released in 1984. There’s something magical in the way the song unfolds with the sounds, the vocals, the tempo, the emotion which comes through in the late Mark Hollis’ subtle yet powerful vocal delivery. For me it’s a signature piece of what made the 80s such an incredible time for musical creativity and fresh new sounds.
Was recovering from a bad car accident when this song came out and just having barely escaped death this song hit me hard, still one of my top favorites of all time.
The animals and the lips sealed was a protest against record company interference that wanted to push Talk Talk as the next Duran Duran. As you like this video and its wildlife, then you need to do Life's What You Make It next...
Via Wikipedia: "There are two versions of the video for "It's My Life". The first, envisioned by director Tim Pope as a statement against the banality of lip-synching, consists almost entirely of footage from wildlife documentaries, interspersed with shots of Talk Talk lead singer Mark Hollis standing in various places throughout the London Zoo. He keeps his hands in his coat pockets and his mouth pointedly shut tight, the latter often obscured by hand-drawn animated lines that occasionally appear in the documentary footage sequences as well."
The bird sqiggle represents freedom, and some animals are free in the wild. And lines also cover the animal's mouths. I don't think you capture all the meaning.
Great reaction, my friend!!! That vocal tone you love that is common to Talk Talk, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Human League, and ABC is the Roxy Music/Bowie influence. Both acts were MUCH bigger in the UK than in the US and almost every Synthpop and New Romantic act of the Postpunk era grew up worshipping and imitating them. The whole Postpunk/Synthpop era (as well as most Goth stuff) owes a debt to the vocal stylings of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie, among a handful of other early 70s Art-Glam heroes (like Marc Bolan of T. Rex and Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel). Freddy Mercury and Elton John kinda belong to an adjacent milieu of 70s Glam, but more of a mainstream "Rawk'n'Roll" way than a European Space Queen way, which was the Roxy-Bowie axis.
Not so much Hollis! He had an older brother whose record collection Mark would peruse and enjoy to his hearts content. Sure he dug Bowie, but his tastes were richer and deeper than the other bands you mention! More than anything, he loved silence.
This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this song lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY and those aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous recording does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."
I've always thought this tune sounds like something by Roxy Music. The vocals remind me of those by Bryan Ferry. I like the bassline. The "animal" audio-effects sound like they could have been created by Brian Eno behind some synth keyboard. I'm not a big fan of 80s New Wave, but this tune moves just right -- suave and smooth. Next up: "Suddenly Last Summer" (The Motels).
Yeah, it has those warm synth tones Roxy was leaning toward in their later stuff. So much UK Synth stuff evokes Bryan Ferry. And that bass tone really is perfection.
Good call. This tune is definitely reminiscent of Roxy Music. I'm not that big of a fan of 80's New Wave either but I have a lot of respect for Talk Talk's experimental approach to sounds.
Great song, loved your reaction too! You're right, Mark Hollis (lead singer and band leader) is British, in fact, he's from London. His lips were sealed in this video as a statement against lip-synching They have some other great songs which you might enjoy but their masterpieces are 2 albums: Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. I think I've seen your reaction to I Believe in You from SoE but I can't find it now... Anyway, these are the kind of albums that you need to hear from start to finish in complete silence with no interruption. But if you do this, they can change your life! :) Powerful stuff and extremely creative. Maybe you should start doing album reactions, haha
I'm almost 58 & fell in love with this song when it came out - yes... his haunting voice (& I LOVE your reaction to hearing it - says a lot about Mark Hollis's unique gift), and was absolutely blown away by all the unusual animal sounds incorporated into the fabric of the song - so naturally ... the synths and bass line are so exceptional as well ... what a gem from the 80s! Thanks for featuring it!
Yes! This is my favorite version even though I appreciate No Doubt’s too. But this one hits harder. Another song I like of theirs is actually called Talk Talk. Maybe one day you’ll get to do that one.
One of the greatest songs from the 80's!!! Of course Talk Talk is the best by far... I could put this song on repeat and listen to it all day long... that's how much I love this song.
There is no comparison for me. Mark Hollis’ voice was beautiful, melancholy and full of emotion. I’m a huge fan of Mark’s and of Talk Talk with the Colour of Spring album being my favorite. He was a true artist.
Awesome reaction! I love their song ‘Life’s What You Make It’ when I first heard it, immediately stuck in my head. The piano, drums and his vocals, haunting but such a vibe.
You should also check out "Talk Talk" "The Party's Over" "Colour of Spring" "Such a Shame" (yes the band did a song called talk talk also. BTW these boys are 100% Essex boys from England UK. We loved 'em.
@Sincerely, K.S.O. Love your reactions. I love this song and you’re the first reactor I’ve seen do this song so you are making me a happy dude. Better than no doubt for sure, his vocals in this song and his voice, so unique
Talk Talk!! My Fav! RIP Mark Hollis It's amazing stuff and you should definitely do more check out 'Life's what you make it' or 'Living in another world' next
Hi Kemi, 🥰GREAT!!🥰 reaction on this masterpiece of music!!👍👍 Please do more of Talk Talk! Keep on entertaining your community in your special, lovely and very autentic way! Love it!🤗❣ And Mark Hollis was really outstanding!! Miss him 🙏😇😢
That rich, almost pompous sound to the voice is a classic hallmark of 80’s male British vocals. Brian Ferry, ABC, Spandau Ballet, The Fixx, Peter Kingsbery (Cock Robin) and many other faves of mine all sang with that style even though their voices were wildly different.
This song is taking me back in my 5th grade here in the Philippines. I am now 49 and I still remember this song while I am playing my yoyo. I love Mark H. He is so cool even in live version. His voice is still the same even when he was old and alive. Rest in peace, Mark.
One of my favorite songs/videos from the early MTV days! While No Doubt did a decent version of the song, it doesn't even come close to this one. RIP Mark Hollis.
This song takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. To me it represents the eighties. I’m 58 now, older and wiser. I wouldn’t trade my era for anyone else’s. That said, enjoy your era your youth for it passes quickly.
I remember dropping into that zoo in about 1983 and seeing that polar bear. It was the last time I went to a zoo, the poor thing seemed so miserable. Looked much happier in this climp, but a really small enclosure for it. Great song.

If you like that British male crooning style of singing, you want to check out some Bryan Ferry, either with Roxy Music ("Dance Away" is my favorite, but "More Than This" is awesome, too) (earlier Roxy Music is great, too, but Mr. Ferry's singing style then was less crooning), or his solo recordings ("Slave To Love" would be your best bet).
Talk Talks version will always be my favourite. Such an underrated band but a massive part of my teens/early 20’s.
RIP Mark Hollis ❤️ x
'No Doubt' made their version, but their music video didn't have any impact on me. I like No Doubt to a certain degree, but I hated them making a cover of this song and turning it into a human dilemma.. and you might have guessed it by now, Talk Talk is always gonna be my Number one.
I loved everything about Mark Hollis; his voice, his attitude to music & his individuality. Always his own man. R.I.P. Mark. His passing made me unutterably sad.
And the younger me found him VERY attractive as well. RIP.
Sadly, Mark Hollis died in 2019. No Doubt did a great job, but this one will always be my favorite.
I agree to both statements there about how this is your favorite this one is also my favorite. But Gwen Stefani did a great job on the cover.
No doubts version was an homage, this is the beautiful original 🎶🥰♥️
Totally agree....
Same
Talk Talk is one of my favourite bands from the 80s. Hollis dead made me very sad. He wasn't that old :(
The original Talk Talk version for the win!
Hardly needs saying!
If Mark Hollis's Vibrato doesn't send a shiver up your spine, you're listening to him wrong.
Talk Talk - Lifes what you make it, is another great song .
Life's What You Make it" would be a great follow up reaction
Great video too
Yes, "Life's What You Make It"
Yes, Mark Hollis' voice is so filled with emotion. You can't compare with this, and it is the original.
The original is DEFINITELY the best version! Another wonderful reaction!
What a voice,what a song!
Mark Hollis' voice makes me cry, it touches me so much
Oh for sure.
When I went to Dallas on a mini vacation, this song was very popular at the nightclub circuit. This song brings back memories of my youth
I enjoy Gwen’s cover version and I was so impressed when she chose to record it. glad you lived through that
One of my favorite songs from the 80's! RIP Mark Hollis

That was a very well-crafted synopsis. Nicely done!
Not so much Hollis! He had an older brother whose record collection Mark would peruse and enjoy to his hearts content. Sure he dug Bowie, but his tastes were richer and deeper than the other bands you mention! More than anything, he loved silence.
The original and best. Mark Hollis was unique. 💔
You have to watch and listen to the live version of this song with a bongo solo... Live at Montreux 1986 - AMAZING!
÷1 the definitive version and the last tour Talk Talk did, '86

The Motels: Take the L; Remember the Nights; Total Control; Shame; Danger
Totally agree! Very Roxy Musicesque.
Good call. This tune is definitely reminiscent of Roxy Music. I'm not that big of a fan of 80's New Wave either but I have a lot of respect for Talk Talk's experimental approach to sounds.
@@Mark-zu6oz YESSSS, Remember The Nights!
Super reaction. I like how you let the music take you away.
Great song, loved your reaction too! You're right, Mark Hollis (lead singer and band leader) is British, in fact, he's from London. His lips were sealed in this video as a statement against lip-synching

The 80's were epic, believe me I was there!!

Great 80s music timeless i was a huge fan bacu in time
One of my top five songs. LOVE this ! Thanks for reacting to it x "Life's What You Make It" is another stormer from Talk Talk.
Oh I loooooove this song! Waiting for more Depeche!
Yes! This is my favorite version even though I appreciate No Doubt’s too. But this one hits harder.

I love TALKTALK; saw their very first London gig; they were brilliant!

It’s always a great compliment for an artist to do an arrangement of another artists song!
@@dkompres6889 I agree and sometimes the cover can improve upon a song, but for me the original of It’s My Life is best.
Can't beat the original.
Yep I was liking the remake but this a different level. Genius!
One of the best songs in history. Have always loved it yeah. By the way, love love love your new look. Peace and love to you.
THE band of my youth way back in the 1980ies! I loved their music so much! Thank you for reacting!
Another incredible song by them: Such a Shame
Yeah, "Such A Shame" is their closest song to this one in my opinion.
I dont think you can beat the 80s for the best music..maybe cause Im 62 now and a old fart
@@johnlloydgriffith3842 No, it's becaue you're right.
great i like Tomorrow never started
Awesome reaction! I love their song ‘Life’s What You Make It’ when I first heard it, immediately stuck in my head. The piano, drums and his vocals, haunting but such a vibe.
Great track. Still holds up from the 80's.
Such A Shame is another to do.
Awesome song from an awesome band, I was lucky to see them live RIP Mark
Oh I'm jealous. I would have to have seen them live. I don't remember them coming to the states much.
This song is sooooo good, I used to love when they played it at the clubs, I always danced to it, one of my top 5 fav 80s songs ❤️❤️❤️
Such a great song. We lost Mark Hollis far too young.
Love the magic of this classic 1980's video. Love when he winks. RIP, Mark Hollis.
This is the version from my student days that I fell in love with so it's no contest for me really.
Talk Talk was a fantastic band, wrote a lot great songs. It's My Life is a decade defining song.
You should check out a live version, he really puts himself all out there on the stage. It was a great loss when he left us 🎸🎶
Love Talk Talk! The intensity in his voice and that build to ‘it’s my life” gets me every time! 🙌🙌
"Life's What You Make It" is another fine one from them
You should also check out "Talk Talk" "The Party's Over" "Colour of Spring" "Such a Shame" (yes the band did a song called talk talk also. BTW these boys are 100% Essex boys from England UK. We loved 'em.
This will always be my favorite version however No Doubt did an amazing job in updating it but sticking very true to the original song
I LOVE this song so much.
@Sincerely, K.S.O. Love your reactions. I love this song and you’re the first reactor I’ve seen do this song so you are making me a happy dude.
Better than no doubt for sure, his vocals in this song and his voice, so unique
Still one of my favs. Love this song.
I never knew there was a cover version of this. Yeah they were British; part of that early 80s synth pop sound.
Talk Talk!! My Fav! RIP Mark Hollis
It's amazing stuff and you should definitely do more
check out 'Life's what you make it' or 'Living in another world' next
Such a beautiful song!! You crack me up KSO.
Talk Talk was so very underrated. One of my all time favorites. Thanx for sharing! RIP Mark Hollis ~Be Blessed
Just so you know, I'm dancing with you. That was great. I love Talk Talk. Another favorite of mine is 'Life's what you make it".
RIP Mark Hollis (2019). He was born in London.
One of the Synth-Pop classics from the 80's...Thanks Mark(RIP) and the guys..!!
Hi Kemi,

And Mark Hollis was really outstanding!! Miss him 🙏😇😢
Reminds me of my last family holiday in summer 1986, just before my 18th birthday. Listened to this track/album over and over.
One of my favourite 80's bands, I saw them live in Bradford UK 1986, (Colour of spring tour). RIP Mark.
I grew up in England listening to talk talk . Marks voice is so unique and will always remind me of the long summer days of the 80s
Great times

As far as I am concerned this is the only version. An absolute timeless classic of a song. What an anthem!
Always in my top 100...
I LOVE THIS SONG! ❤️❤️
Great 1980s song! Love the original Talk Talk version better (though No Doubt's cover is not bad).
Don’t think any cover version can surpass this masterpiece. This was my favorite song of 1984.
One of my favorite songs/videos from the early MTV days! While No Doubt did a decent version of the song, it doesn't even come close to this one. RIP Mark Hollis.
Look up "Tomorrow Started" by Talk Talk from the album "It's my life" 1984.
This song takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. To me it represents the eighties. I’m 58 now, older and wiser. I wouldn’t trade my era for anyone else’s. That said, enjoy your era your youth for it passes quickly.
This song is my favorite 80's decade song.... "Living in another world" is also a great song by Talk Talk
I am glad I saw your take on this version. It's the best version and does get a boost from my sentimentality for 1980s music.
No Doubt the definitive Mark Holis and Talk Talk version is the bomb. Just chosen that tune for my dad's funeral you sold it KSO, thanks.
Try "Renee" from "It's My Life". Haunting and beautiful classic.
I remember dropping into that zoo in about 1983 and seeing that polar bear. It was the last time I went to a zoo, the poor thing seemed so miserable. Looked much happier in this climp, but a really small enclosure for it.
Great song.
It was London zoo by the way - Talk Talk were British/English.
I don't think it looked happy and that was the point in the video. The bird squiggle is the contrast to the enclosure.
Great music from talk talk I also like “the party is over”, “my foolish Friend “, “it’s ashamed” and “life its what you make it”
Wow, you really made my day! Your expressions show exactly how I feel while enjoying this song, what a touching 'first listen', fantastic, thanks!
I too, consider Talk Talk to be of my favorites. Talk Talk was the first song I latched onto. It was their most discofied songs; the 12" is really good. Then they kept putting out albums that were more intelligent and more diverse sounding. I think there are 5 real albums and all worth owning. RUclips as 2 or 3 complete concerts from around 1994. Excellent shows. I think he sang from his diaphram, and worked on lowering his voice (as all men should). Is it a baritone? Even in the concerts, he sings with an incredible range and with the right emotion. I like all their hair long. Same as it Ever Was. As Loose Marks points out, Mark Hollis passed in 1986 or 1996. A big loss. Steven Pettinga, Indianapolis.
There's that one part with a basis and playing and then it just starts up right in the middle of the phrase it's just picking up where I left off it's so genius picks up right where it is right in the middle of the base leg yeah the 80s had their own special Magic text you on the next drop
Please react to Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It".
You should do their other tune , “Life’s what you make it” 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 or a tune by The Waterboys - “The whole story of the Moon” ..a real banging tune
Heard this song and saw the video for the first time on USA's Night Flight, back in '82, I think. Always liked it😊.
I was there when this song hit the airwaves in 83 or 4. I was transfixed. The original and By far the Greatest version. No Doubt.
One of the greatest alternative tunes of all time. ❤️
KSO, you look like you'd be a ton of fun to go dancing with! Girl's Night! 🎉
So sad. Mark Hollis was a great song writer and musician. Check out some of their live concerts on RUclips. Such A Shame is a great song. RIP Mark.
Talk talk was my band as a teenager, 12 inch remix album was played over and over again
This song is pure art, I was in my early 20s when this came out.
Great sounds great music sounds good voice and live sounds good
Love this ....memeories.
Talk Talk the band Talk Talk the song Talk Talk the album woooo!
I only like Talk Talk's version. RIP Mark Hollis.
