Something that always struck me as brilliant in this animation was the moment at 3:45 when it's obvious that the attackers slow down. Dramatically, it tells us that they know they are in control..but visually, i cant get over how well it was communcated.
I noticed that two. The two bad guys slowed down when they saw the couple was trapped. The look in their eyes showed the transition from chasing to now getting ready to strike!
Great Reaction to THREE THOUSAND HAND DRAWINGS that took 2 Artists 4 months and this was the most-watched video on MTV and revolutionary for its time. 40 years on and well over One BILLION VIEWS for an old song and video speaks volumes. Good Luck...
I visited the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and the highlight of the visit was on the 5th floor, where they had the actual art pages from this video displayed behind glass! I was so thrilled to see them there!
A-Ha is far from a "one hit wonder". This song was their biggest hit in the US, but they recorded 11 studio albums, 5 live albums and 50 singles. They have fans worldwide and are still performing. In fact, they have the record for the largest single-band concert, over 100,000 tickets sold... In Brazil I think? This song and the video in particular were ground-breaking in 1985. The artwork was done by hand, frame by frame, with two people working 16 weeks. It's called Rotoscoping, where film was shot, then each frame projected and traced to make the animated drawings. The cafe is still in London, looks exactly the same and is a tourist destination for A-Ha fans from all over the world. Morten and the woman in the video (I think her name is Binty?) met again there a couple years ago for a 6 part special about the making of the song and video. Morten Harket is considered by some to be the best falsetto alive and has lost little of his talent over the years. The "next best" is Curt Smith of Tears For Fears, whose "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" came out the same year as "Take On Me". Morten performed this song on The Masked Singer TV show a couple years ago. If you enjoyed this version of the song, check out the MTV Unplugged version which also can be found on RUclips. It's quite different, but every bit as good.
Absolutely, just the song Minor Earth Major Sky from the superb album of the same name (2000) is an extraordinary thing in itself, and this is just scratching the a-ha surface
Best Music video of the 80s when this came out no bands or singers had done a video like this yet mixed with the voice of Morten Harket and the new wave sound so amazing. The 80s were the start of the change you see in the world today what a decade so glad to have grown up in it.
I remember my childhood. Back then Norwegian band A-ha was huge in Europe. All the girls loved Morten Harket 😁 In fact this one was voted the best music video of the decade
"I need to look into more of them..." Now THAT is music to my ears. You won't regret it. How about you start with "The Sun always shines on TV" or "Hunting high and low". Official music videos. Oh, and the live unplugged version of "Take on me" is amazing.
I loved that the video music screen was huge! Thank you!!!!! I love that you paid close attention to this masterpiece video!!!!!! Great reaction!!!! I saw it on mtv in the 90s with my teenaged kids. No RUclips back then, we had to wait until it was shown again on mtv!
Kudos on a large view format, very nice! And how you paid attention to both the song & the MTV. One of the better reaction videos for this song out there. 💕 You understood the story and just did a cool thing. Thank you so much!! Watch the sequel :) and stay cool!
Most of us (girls) in the 80's fell hard for the lead singer (Morten Harket) in this video, who was hailed by one writer as "possibly the most handsome singer in music since Elvis Presley". Their good looks (sadly) overshadowed how massively talented they were/are, and the US market didn't play them in heavy rotation. They are incredible. Here's a trivia nugget for you: a-ha was the first band to create a made-for-the-internet video for one of their songs (they just beat Madonna to the punch) for the song "I Wish I Cared" back in 2000. The song is haunting and absolutely *gorgeous*. I highly recommend all their songs, but that is one of my favorites, along with "Stay On These Roads", also worth your time if you like haunting romantic songs. Wonderful reaction, and best of luck with your channel!
Thanks so much for not stopping this incredible video every other second like most reviewers do - the lead singer of Aha (and the cute guy in the video) is Morten Harket - a word of warning though, do not watch their video The sun shines on tv, it contains an ending to this Take on me story and ruins it, I still don't understand why they chose to do that.
They were a band from Norway who took this song to #1 here in the states in 1985. The video won a number of awards, and the model/actress and singer actually ended up dating for a while.
I was 20 years old and in college when this song came out in 1985. The song brings back a lot of wonderful memories of that time. But the music video itself is the best music video ever created. Again, this came out in 1985, nearly 40 years ago. I will put this against anything today in terms of music quality, creativeness of the video, and technology at the time vs. the way technological advancement has slowed greatly over the last 40 years compared to pre-1985 40 year time frames (1945-1985, 1905-1945, etc.). We are not as smart as we think we are today, lol. Technology advanced much faster prior to 2000. My friends, girlfriend, and I loved attending concerts when I was in high school/college. It was one of the things we loved doing together. My wife did the same thing during that time period as well. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young in the 70’s/80’s compared to today. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was much more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (29-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.
What Morten,Paal and Magne says about this song: "It is living its own life",about it hitting over 1 billion views on RUclips alone. 3 guys that met eachother really young and found out they had a common passion for music and wanted to make a breakthrough outside of Norway with theyr music. Noone has really done it before or after them, they knew the secret formula. They had people around them doing the right thing, but mostly i think they were theyr own bosses. It seems to hang this curse over Norwegian artists trying to make it,so that is why A-Ha is so special to Norwegians. All 3 are amazing personalities,so humble, funny and just a blast to hear talk and hang with. They are my childhood favourites by far,and they got tons of songs i consider even better then Take On Me,so its sad many from the US consider them a 1 hit wonder,as they are far from it. I tend to suggest abit different from the masses,so here are some good alternative suggestions (i dont know how far you have come in reactions to A-Ha over theese 5 months) a-ha - Touchy! (If you want to see theyr comedic side,as well as see the guys abit out of theyr comfort zone, not gonna spoil what happens in the video, but it is perhaps theyr funniest video together) a-ha - The Blood That Moves The Body (My absolute favourite song by them, and im stunned that it hasnt been used in movie soundtracks more then it has) & a-ha - You Are the One (Just 1 of many videos they shot in the US,and another one that will make you smile. Ladies tend to crush on Morten in this one as well) Since you said you are a sucker for love,2 of theese suggestions are very much love songs.
Damn girl you should definately give them another listen. They have many great songs. Some of my favorites are: The sun always shines on tv, manhattan skylines, stay on these roads, take on me mtv unpluggd version (used in the credits on dadpool 2)and many many more.
I'm glad you did this song by A-HA. Not only do I love the words to the song, but I love the way they change from real life to graphics and back again. LIKED, COMMENTED & SUBSCRIBED! 🤗💖
I remember when this came out and how the boys were talking about the comic action part and the gals talking about how he fought everything just to be with her. Ancient history but at the time the video was so artistically different then everything else.
This song was the first time I liked a song that you’d classify as electronic. I didn’t have MTV, so it was a long time before I ever saw the video & both still hold up today, imo!
@A Dose Of Joy I just wanted to tell you that out of ALL of the Reaction Videos that I’ve seen of this Song (which I love sooo much)…. Your Reaction was hands down THE BEST‼️🙏🏽🥰
Morten was so cute back then. All the girls loved him. Later on he became even better. It is right that he dated the actor, Bunty Bailey for a few months, not two years. Morten says he actually didn't get to know her so well. A-ha has a lot of great songs. You should listen to the follow up, The sun always shines on TV, where you get to see what happens to the couple. Train of thought is showing Mortens voice in the lower range, really something. Hunting high and low is a masterpiece. Stay on these roads, I've been losing you, Crying in the rain (cover of Everly Brothers), Manhattan Skyline...they have so many great songs, and are creative with the videos, too. From more recent years you have Summer moved on, Analogue, Under the make-up, Cast in steel. 10 albums and every single song is worth listening to.
First time on your channel & gotta say i LOVED IT you are terrific at what you do , ive already subscribed to your channel and look forward to your next reaction
You have such a good positive attitude. Aha has been one of my favorites since the 80s. I suggeest to reactors that listen to this song to try Minor earth major sky and stay on these roads at least.
At the time this video won crazy awards filmed in rotoscoping (look it up) great story a motorcycle race champion who yes has rivals and they came after him great video, great reaction
Hi Joy, I'm a brand new subscriber (I pushed you up to 3K :) I grew up in the 80s and this song was a HUGE hit and this video was legendary! It was super unique and original. I'm not sure if you have reacted to his live performance of this song many years later. It was different than the recorded version but very good. He's a great vocalist! You should put out content more regularly because you are definitely a reactor with the x factor! Cheers.
Just in the US. They had way more hits around the world (they’re still really big in South America, where they had the Guinness Book record for largest paying audience in Rock in Rio ‘91) and they did The Living Daylights for James Bond. Plus they’re an inspiration to artists like Coldplay and U2. But yes, there are a huge amount of videos that were inspired by this one, serious and fun ones. Lots to find here on RUclips
Other a-ha songs you should check out The Sun Always Shines on TV Hunting High and Low (well, actually the entire album) Scoundrel Days Cry Wolf The Swing of Things I've Been Losing You Manhattan Skyline (well, actually the entire album Scoundrel Days) Stay on These Roads The Living Daylights (James Bond song) I Call Your Name East of the Sun Sycamore Leaves Summer Moved On Velvet Minor Earth Major Sky Forever Not Yours Lifelines Celice Analogue Foot of the Mountain Riding the Crest Shadowside Under the Makeup Living at the End of the World Mythomania
Nice reaction. I like how you don't pause every 10 seconds and talk through the whole video like too many reactors do. @@adoseofjoy1 hey joe Jimi Hendrix my favorite version is the black and white video German tv show. 1966? He blew those German high school kids awaaaaay! Stunned polite kids.
Try having a look at some more 80s stuff from this side of the pond, through the decades the UK and Europe were leaders in pop music,it may enlighten and broaden your horizons on music from outside of the USA.....
The last part of the music video is very similar to a late scene in "Altered States", the 1980 sci-fi movie starring William Hurt. Coincidence? I think not.
Take on Me is actually about a romantic fling with no promise of commitment. I love the song but it also informs about what motivates women. After all, the lyrics say "take on me. I'll be gone in a day or two.' LIke, apparently females don't hear that or just don't care.
My favourite A-ha song is "I've been loosing you." Other songs to recommend are " Move to Memphis", "Crying in the rain" (Everly brothers cover), "Manhattan skyline" and "The living daylights" (Bond movie theme song).
If you watch 'sun always shines on tv' it's the sequel to this video and picks up where this one leaves off. The song is just as good as this one! ruclips.net/video/a3ir9HC9vYg/видео.html&feature=shares

Yes this was amaaaaazing when it premiered. Song and video still stands test of time
It was right in it’s time. Stop it.
Morten was certainly a big hit with the girls in A-ha's heyday.
This video was groundbreaking as has never been surpassed.
You are adorable

Take on Me is actually about a romantic fling with no promise of commitment. I love the song but it also informs about what motivates women. After all, the lyrics say "take on me. I'll be gone in a day or two.' LIke, apparently females don't hear that or just don't care.
My favourite A-ha song is "I've been loosing you." Other songs to recommend are " Move to Memphis", "Crying in the rain" (Everly brothers cover), "Manhattan skyline" and "The living daylights" (Bond movie theme song).
