@@JT-ne8du Gigantic is an embarrassment as far as the lyrics go, from the point of view of a person whose white friend has a black boyfriend but in true Pixies fashion the musical sum of it's parts is greater and saved the day when it came out; wouldn't fly now though.
Brad has a great ear. Pixies are wonderful in the same way Cake is. Odd, great bass, and funky. Love both bands. Pixies were so ahead of their time, they would fit perfectly in the mid 90s.
Everyone unanimously agrees that Pixies are directly responsible for creating alternative rock. Everyone wants to be the Pixies, even to this day. Such a great band.
Velvet Underground? The Stooges? Television? Sonic Youth? Husker Du? The Replacements? The Clash? Roxy Music? Janes Addiction? Faith No More? I love the Pixies, probably more than any of those bands previously mentioned but they are not directly responsible for alternative rock. An important band and had a big influence on 90s alternative rock but they were not directly responsible for it, many bands played a part in influencing alternative rock in the 90s and beyond.
There were many other bands that influenced the alternative music scene. Perhaps the Pixies were one of the more influential bands at the time certainly not 'directly responsible' for creating alternative rock. Did they influence Dinosaur Jr,Sonic Yourh,'Husker Du,Big Black,Mudhoney,The Replacements? Nope, because all those 'influential' bands came before Pixies.
It’s all post punk- so direct influences to alternative would be the 70s punk bands - major players would be the smiths, the cure, joy division aka new order, all of the early emergent bands that were off shoots of direct punk like X-ray specs, sex pistol, Ramones etc.

This might be the first video I see where the song is weirder than Lex's take on the song. It's all about balance. If the song is a regular song Lex will say it reminds her of the bubbles when you open a can of Coke. If the song is weird she'll say she likes the bass. You can't have chaos on both ends. Speaking of chaos, Brad, if you liked this weirdness then you're ready to go further into the rabbit hole. You guys should react to "Vamos". You're ready.
The Pixies come from Boston. I was playing in a band in Boston at the same time as the Pixies...in the mid 80's. Nobody had ever heard of them and then all of a sudden they were the biggest thing ever. Here's how it happened. They got signed to an Indy label in England (4AD) and then their album ended up in the "Imports" bin at the record stores in Boston. It was very "cool" at the time to buy imports. Knowing all the latest underground British bands was important to anyone in the Boston "scene"...so people would always check out the imports section of the record store. Anyway, the Pixies got marketed as an "import" in the stores, rather than a "local" band, and then the local music magazines picked up on them and told us they were the best thing ever. But before that, if you had looked in the local club listings to see who was playing around Boston...you'd never see The Pixies. Like I said, those of us in the live music scene had never heard of them. Nobody had ever done a show with them. Nobody ever saw them live. They came out of nowhere. Then all of a sudden...they were a "Boston Band". It was weird.
I love the Pixies, their lyrics are amazing to analyze they drop in some really off the wall references. With the Pixies they write some great alt pop songs with dark lyrics but then they can also write some off the wall songs. Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here comes your man are more immedicably accessible, Gigantic is fun while Alec Eiffel is more straight forward alt/rock. It is definitely easy to see why The Pixies were one of David Bowies favorite bands.

But today Brad is my main man! I thought for sure you would hate his high whiny voice, laugh. The first time I ever heard a Pixies song was in the mid 80s. I was out at the lake getting a nice little buzz on with a friend listening to a cassette in his car that he had made of The Replacements. But there was a little room at the end so he put the song Elevator Lady at the end. And I didn't know it was coming and suddenly there's this wall of sound with this high screechy voice but the lyrics were intriguing and hilarious and I loved the feel of it. Immediately went out and bought their first two albums which one of them was an EP anyway called Come On Pilgrim. I immediately fell in love with them. In addition to the influences listed below, they also state that the Beatles were a heavy influence along with Nirvana and the others and I can hear that. And don't forget that the bass player Kim Deal really has a beautiful voice and she sings some of them and does beautiful descant harmonies on others. And not only that, Black Francis can also sing quite beautifully in his lower range. In fact once the Pixies broke up, Black Francis reverted back to his real name Frank Black and had a very successful solo career and some of that music is incredible. Similarly, Kim Deal went off and started the Breeders and they were a very successful band. I saw Pixies live multiple times back in their heyday, as well as the two of them during their respective later careers Fantastic show. On some of their earlier albums, you get to hear just some verbal ad-libbing and messing around between the two of them and it is absolutely hilarious. They are very very funny. I would also say that this is earlier Pixies and album-by-album, it's the same sound in the same feel and the same humor but their sound did get more polished and more lush and perhaps a bit more melodic so there is a wide range to choose from. But from the early stuff, you have to hear the song Gigantic. It features Kim on lead vocals and it's so fun. Also Caribou. They also do a quiet melancholy one which is absolutely beautiful and it's their cover of another band's song called Wave of Mutilation. The one off the album is faster and heavier but they did a slow atmospheric version for the soundtrack of the movie Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater. It is so dreamy and haunting. In some sense though, Elevator Lady remains my favorite because it's the first one I ever heard and it literally blew my mind. I had absolutely no idea what I was listening to and we were listening to it at ear bleeding levels. .

Yo, it's crazy ya'll reacted to this song. This is one of my most cherished songs ever, never thought in a million years a youtuber would choose to listen to it and make a video about it. Such an amazing and surprisingly emotional song
The best thing about alternative-i.e. not commercial music-is that it expands the listener’s musical arcs. The Pixies musical painted on canvasses of odd shapes and sizes to make unique art. Unique gets noticed and is built upon hence the endless list of artists the Pixies have influenced. Thank you for doing this reaction!
Ever watch Fight Club? The song at the end when the buildings are coming down, the song playing is titled "Where is my mind." That's my favorite Pixies song. Another good one is "Gouge away."
There are so many amazing Pixies songs out there: Debaser, Alec Eiffel, Here Comes Your Man, Dig For Fire, Planet Of Sound, Motorway To Roswell, and the list goes on...
@@pdog547 my buddy lent me his copy of their greatest hits when I was 14. Had never heard them before. That CD didn't leave my Walkman until I bought more of their music
Pixies is probably the most influential alternative bands. When asked about “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Kurt Cobain said “I was just trying to rip off the Pixies”. He wasn’t joking. If you listen to the Pixies song “Debaser” you can hear the guitar riff from Smells Like Teen Spirit all the way through the song.
Wow! Pixies posted your reaction video on their FB page! How cool! I worshiped Pixies when I was in high school in the late 80’s and the early 90’s! They’re still one of my favorite bands. They’ve been so influential and loved by so many bands and artists from Nirvana, Soundgarden, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer and so many more.. even David Bowie was a huge fan.
Pixies were amazing live. Seeing them with Throwing Muses in 1988 was one of several legendary gigs I went to between 1987-1994. Met them a few years later in Paris backstage after the gig. Gave me a lot of food and dubious substances.
I hope you guys get into a Pixies rabbit hole & run with it!! Seeing some of Brad's facial expressions reminded me of some of my own feelings towards the Pixies all those many years ago when I first started listening... Hearing the Pixies is DEFINITELY an equivalent to having a religious experience.
This is one of the best songs ever written. Nothing else sounds like it before or after. I remember being a teenager listening to this in the 90’s and thinking “Wow! This song is genius.”
Lex's insights continue to amaze. Saying how the Pixies can make normal songs but then undo those songs to make "Hey" shows they are super talented also applies to visual artists like Picasso, the Abstract Expressionists, and Warhol. All of them could produce "normal" art at a high level but they then broke down that process to create something new and different.
Can't ait to see them later this year. Such a great underated band. Tried to get my brother to listen to it but didn't think he would like it cause of stuff he had heard about the style etc then we were watching Zac and Miri make a ... and he heard this song in it and said "this song is sick" and i laughed and told him it was Pixies and now loves them.
I'm going be seeing THE PIXIES at the end of this year for the third time I CAN'T WAIT I FEEL LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS. THEY'RE INSANELY WONDERFUL LIVE DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER
And while your at it…may as well check out BIG BLACK too. Maybe something from there 2nd (final) album ‘Songs About Fucking’! After all Steve Albini from BIG BLACK engineered Surfer Rosa for the Pixies!
The Pixies are one of my favorite bands at all, during decades. They are simply an icredible band. You just have to listen to them and, soon, you will understand what their incredible value is 😉
Check out “Monkey gone to heaven” and “Gigantic”. Kim does vocals on Gigantic. I think you guys have done a Breeders song. Kim from the Breeders is also Kim from the Pixies. She formed the Breeders with her sister, Kelly, when The Pixies broke up.
Came here after seeing this posted on FB by Pixies. This was great. I was already a huge Pixies fan before hearing this song, but watching two people hear it for the first was a lot of fun. New subscriber here 🙋♂️
Man you've got 5 albums to check out now - every song on each of them has something wonderfully quirky about it. At any given moment back in high school you could have asked me what was in my discman and most often my answer would have been either Pixies, Floyd, Zeppelin or Metallica
Love to see Pixies reactions! Some of their stuff is louder and they were a huge influence on 90's alt-rock. As others have said Kurt Cobain was a huge fan.
The great thing about the Pixies is that some songs of them sounds like you heard before cause all the influence they had in all the grunge/alternative music in the 90s, 00s. Try Caribou, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away, Gigantic. They had a bunch of classics
Yeah. Black Francis ( the singer and main songwriter ) is a genius. He has made music for 40 years , in different genres and different ways. David Bowie was a big fan of the Pixies and had a lot of praise for them.
Pixies, oh man, what a band. Back in 1991, in Glasgow's SECC venue, the gig had to be abandoned during Debaser (just the third song in) due to the enthusiastic crowd breaking the barrier in front of the stage. Great support from Cud and Teenage Fanclub, thankfully.
Pixies will always be among my favourites and "Hey" is one of my Pixies favourites. So thanks for reacting. Both their albums "Doolittle" and "Bossanova" are very relevant to this day. Didn´t expect Brad to like it. Good on him! Edit: And Lex hits the nail on the head about their compositions. They´re often a bit unusual and weird, but sooo fun!
It’s kinda mind blowing how a band that I’ve loved so much for many years can sound this foreign to others. “Hey”was the soundtrack of my life for awhile.
Pixies were Gen X alternative rock music 😃. We loved em. They along with groups like Sonic Youth (female and male singers like Pixies), B-52s ( same, female and male singers), Dinosaur JR, RHCP, Jane's Addiction/Pornos for Pyros, , Smithereens, Pavement, REM, Violent Femmes, Joy Division ('late '70s- early '80s), 1000 Maniacs, Mudhoney, The Replacements, The Cure, Ween, etc. All alternative rock in the '80s and '90s. And ahead of their time, influenced many alt rock bands in the '90s and '00s. Back in the days was called college radio, modern rock, alternative. Music like this was only played on college radio back then and videos on MTV segment called 120 Minutes ( alternative music videos for 2 hrs) late at nite, finally broke into mainstream radio from underground, college radio around the late '80s - early '90s . Loud/quiet dynamics from groups like Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur JR, etc were huge influences for alternative rock in the future. Including Weezer, Cake, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse and many others. lol. Early Nirvana years, they toured woth Pixies often. Cobain loved them. 🎸. I could see why Brad likes alt and Indie rock. Lol. Punk rock too. Can picture him playing their music. The Pretenders were alternative rock, new wavish in the 70s and 80s, made mainstream success in the '80s. I was a teen during the early '90s, remember all of this. Pixies are a surf punk, indie/alternative rock band. See their songs "Gouge Away", "Gigantic", "Caribou", "Debaser" , " No13 Baby", and "UMass" too. Kim Deal (bass guitarist and co-singer) left the band and started The Breeders in the '90s. They were good in the '90s and '00s. Yall have reacted to their song "Cannonball"already, need to see more of their songs like "Saints", "Safari", "Divine Hammer", "Son of Three", etc.
Pixies redeemed the 80's, music bloomed into Grunge and pop-punk from here, the guy with the top comment mentioned, a few (British) bands were influenced to form bands by attending Pixies concert I know that at least two members of Blur went to the first night and secured tickets for the next night. Different guys from Radiohead may have attended both, I can't remember and can't be bothered googling it! Special mention to Husker Du for sparking the Pixies idea in Charles and Joey's minds!

Totally agree, it's just sound effortless perfect, that's what I love with Pixies!
Best PIXIES song ever! the Sound the Mother Makes When the Baby Breaks is the best line in a song ever!
It’s one of those songs that you find yourself listening to on a loop for weeks years after you first hear it.
Pixies are one of the major indie bands that would go on to influence Grunge in a big way. You should check out Sonic Youth as well.
Ooh. I LOVE Sonic Youth but are they ready??
@@inphanta I think Brad will like Sonic Youth, very unique group. He seems to love alternative/indie rock. and punk rock type music. May take Lex (she does like it too but usually has to grow on her) some time to dig them, though. lol
Public Enemy was recording "Fear of a Black Planet" in the same studio when Sonic Youth was recording "Goo" and they were featured on SY's "Kool Thing". That would be cool. ermmm, Kool.
@@JaneDoe396Hz I remember the music video, too. really cool!
@@JaneDoe396Hz I don't know if it was just before or soon after you posted here about the song and this collaboration, but Couch Gang did react to Kool Thing
I have a PIXIES tattoo.
No song will sound like any other - just...go with it.
Monkey Gone To Heaven, Debaser or Alec Eiffel might be good ones to do.
I'm getting a tattoo of " This human form, where I was born, I now repent" underneath a caribou skull.....
@@richardctaylor79 Nice. Mine's the winged "P" from the Trompe Le Monde cover, in a circle with lightning bolts on the sides - I'm sure you've seen the logo. Left forearm...right above the Ministry "M".
GOUGEEEEEEE AWAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
@@xCaLLMeGHeTTo But you can't stay all day, if you want to. Only until this tattoo is done. ;)

This was from one of last years '80s alternative streams. Spring time. We need another one.
I envy you getting to listen to Pixies songs for the first time and experience that culture shock ❤️
I was a teenager when I heard Doolittle and Surferosa for the first time. Blew me away at the time and they still do.
Saw The Pixies in 88 and still to this day is the best gig I ever saw, great reaction btw 👏
I love that brad likes the Pixies. They're an amazing band, and hugely influential. Frank Black is an awesome poet.
True.
I’m so glad to see you reacting to a song I absolutely love.
"It wasn't bad". One of the greatest rock songs ever written.
There are so many amazing Pixies songs out there: Debaser, Alec Eiffel, Here Comes Your Man, Dig For Fire, Planet Of Sound, Motorway To Roswell, and the list goes on...
Oh and ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ is a must, too.
Brad is right on this one - everything fits. A masterpiece.
I have been waiting for more people to react to Pixies' songs, and this one in particular. They are so good.
That is so cool; Brad discovered alternative stuff, and Lex discovered metal. I love watching this show!
Pixies are probably my number 1 band of all time. Love to see you guys reacting to more Pixies!
By far my favorite band. Would love to see more of them from you guys
+1
I was about 17 when Doolittle came out...just monumental. I've got the winged "P" tattooed on my forearm ;)
I'm so glad Brad liked this! Pixies are wonderful!
Wow, I had no idea! I hope it helped them because they've helped me so much. Thank you for letting me know!
PIXIES!!!!!! HUGE influences on so many great bands!
So glad you've got on the pixies train. Brilliant band.
Spot-on, you two. Great job. Pixies are an acquired taste; you are way ahead of the curve.
This is one of the best songs ever written. Nothing else sounds like it before or after. I remember being a teenager listening to this in the 90’s and thinking “Wow! This song is genius.”
Pixies are so so so so so so GOOD. And so so so so underappreciated.
I've seen this band in concert 3 times and somhow overlooked this gem. It's hilarious 🤣
I'm going be seeing THE PIXIES at the end of this year for the third time I CAN'T WAIT I FEEL LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS. THEY'RE INSANELY
WONDERFUL LIVE DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER
Love them and such an influential band. Pre Grunge. Check out Sonic Youth as well.
And while your at it…may as well check out BIG BLACK too. Maybe something from there 2nd (final) album ‘Songs About Fucking’! After all Steve Albini from BIG BLACK engineered Surfer Rosa for the Pixies!
Sonic Youth may be a little too advanced for these two.
Pixies and Faith No More both are very influential and underrated lol
This is a seminal band. For real. Next level. All kneel. All bow
Love that the Pixies shared this video on Facebook. 😄
Yeah. Black Francis ( the singer and main songwriter ) is a genius. He has made music for 40 years , in different genres and different ways.
David Bowie was a big fan of the Pixies and had a lot of praise for them.
Loud quiet loud is the formula
As a lifelong Pixies fan - it was so fun to watch your take!
Pixies broke the mold for a lot of bands that came after
Pixies' sound was way ahead of their time.
Wow, thanks for introducing me to this song, I love it.
This is such a good song!! I showed this too all my friends! They never heard it before. I felt so cool haha
This song def strikes a chord with me on raw emotion. Just the pain of being close.
Love this band, they have a huge cult following. 86-91 pre-grunge
“I feel like that just expanded my ears…” 👌
Been waiting, on you, to do another Pixies song. Brad gets it!
I just heard it for the first time in the suicide squad movie and its been my soundtrack for the last week
If you like a band from the 90s they were probably influenced by the pixies in some way
Pixies were Gen X alternative rock music 😃.
Oh man I am so happy brad likes the Pixies! He always keeps me guessing
Pixies have so many great songs, Gouge Away, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Monkeys Gone To Heaven, Where Is My Mind...
Fantastic - been waiting for this one - thanks guys
The Pixies break all the rules and it's an adventure being apart of it.
