This was on the alternative/indie stream the other night. Pixies were a great band. Basically early grunge here. lol It's a slowed down punk rock style music with sludgy guitars, surf punk. It's post-punk, which usually also has a funky distinct bass guitar beat. Guess who Nirvana modeled themselves after? Pixies and many of the underground band back then. Nirvana was once underground, too until they hit it big in the early '90s. Many of these kinds of bands weren't well known in the mainstream ('80s) unless you listened to college radio, alternative radio stations (DJs were/are hip, young college students, lots of freedom/individuality, experimental, also bands self promoted to the radio stations and on campuses) and if you stayed up late at night to watch MTV music videos on 2 hour programs like 120 Minutes and Alternative Nation during the '80s and '90s, which showed groups like these. Also Cutting Edge program ('80s) on MTV. Or through zines , underground circulations and magazines. Or through word of mouth, hanging out with friends at record stores, college music rooms, , concerts/touring, networking, video shoots, DIY mantra, played in smaller venues/underground clubs, grew fan base, promoted cassettes/CDs, posters, t-shirts. College radio and alt radio stations plays lots of non mainstream stuff. During the '70s, '80s, early '90s, you would hear new wave, punk, alt rock, indie rock, early hip hop and reggae on these stations, these genres were mostly underground back then. Many of these artists were under smaller record labels and independent labels. Indie basically means independent. Most of their music sounded very different (its very experimental and fusions) from mainstream and popular music or bands under large record labels, corporate/commercial music. .Also were alternative label came from, meaning non mainstream. Back then it was usually called 'Modern" music or modern rock. Remember, during most of these years, technology and social media wasn't as the way it is now.. When the late '80s, early '90s came around. The radio and MTV was bombarded by hair rock/metal (most of them were mainly blues based hard rock) during the '80s, was growing bland and non original by the early '90s. That's when the huge alternative rock, along with hip hop, punk/grunge, exploded into mainstream. Bands like Pixies, Sonic Youth, REM, early U2, Dinosaur JR, Husker Du, 10000 Maniacs, The Smithereens, early RHCP The Smiths, , etc helped pave the way during the '80s and early '90s. All once college radio stars , started to become mainstream, some went on to bigger record labels. . Hair bands kind of faded away into the background by the mid/late '90s. Many still tour, but itsnt the same as it was during the '80s. While alternative music has been pretty mainstream after all of these years since then. There are still college radio stations, BTW. Same thing, they play lots of mainstream stuff and that includes modern day non mainstream music. For Pixies they lasted from the mid '80s til the early '90s. They recently reunited a few years ago. I recommend to check out "Gouge Away", " Debaser", "Alec Eiffel" , "No 13 Baby", "Gigantic, and " Velouria" next, with the videos. Also check out more of The Breeders . After Pixies broke up during the '90s. Kim Deal (Pixies bassist and co-singer), she formed her own group, they were around from the '90s - early '00s. Check out "Saints", "Safari", Divine Hammer", "Son of Three". Nirvana was also influenced a lot by Sonic Youth, they were record label mate (Sup Pop) and toured on concerts together. Check out more of Sonic Youth . Videos like "Dirty Boots" and "Teen Age Riot". BTW, that was awesome stream that you 2 did last week, Alternative/Indie stream. Fun stream that went well. Keep those coming!
I got the albums from the start. Being as how here in the UK they were big long before they were stateside. Same as nirvana and Hendrix were. But I didn't start a band. However I do have a good reason for that, being how I'm totally musically untalented and can't play an E chord without scaring all the birds away. But I get your point. I'm just not into grandiose cliches is all.
The Pixies were one of many bands influenced by the Modern Lovers (Jonathan Richman is a genius). You should do a few reaction vids to Modern Lovers tracks like "Pablo Picasso" and others off their debut album. It was produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground and set the stage for much of the musical sensibilities of the punk & new wave of the 70s into the 80s. They were the crown jewel of the Boston music scene of the early 70s. Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads & David Robinson of the Cars were in the band.
You are now officially in the Pixies rabbit hole. Three songs in now you have to go all the way. They are the reason for Nirvana and the whole grunge scene. Check out their other songs: Here Comes Your Man, Debaser, Motorway to Roswell, Alec Eiffel, Letter to Memphis, Wave of Mutilation, Bone Machine, La La I Love You, Gigantic

"When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected w/ that band so heavily I should have been with that band or at least in a Pixies cover band." - Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
The Pixies are about excellent musical composition and making you laugh. If you're looking for words of wisdom you won't find them. Just smile and enjoy.
Pixies are classic alternative rock. If you saw the movie Fight Club the Pixies were singing the ending song with Tyler and Marla Singer. "Where is my mind." I always liked "Here comes your Man."
i love pixies. one of the few bands i love equally as faith no more and mr.bungle. this band is so energetic and raw, and crazy. frank black abstract lyrics are fun and so interesting to hear and even guessing what hes says is fun when not reading. lol
The first two verses talk about pollution, with the first being about waste being dumped into the ocean and the second being about air pollution ripping a hole in the ozone layer. The third verse delves into numerology in religion. The chorus seems to reference the Scopes "monkey" trial of 1925, where a Tennessee teacher was put on trial for teaching about human evolution and about how man was descended from apes. The trial was a national spectacle, and featured theological debates between fundamentalist Christians and modernists.
Pixies are one of those bands like the Beatles. You really have to listen to their whole catalogue to appreciate their greatness and influence on rock music. Probably the most influential band of the last 30 years.
I still shout Rock me Joe before any lead guitar solo. I love the Pixies, the lyrics are always interesting and slightly out of leftfield. You need to listen to Gigantic, which has Kim Deal singing on it rather than Frank Black. Apparently and I may have been mislead but Gigantic is a tribute to a liaison Kim had with a gentleman of colour.
Haha lex is a classic metal head who for some reason the majority never got the Pixies, wants to like it because if the guitars but can't get the groove. This song is a surreal reference to what is now common place, environmental and climate issues. "REPENT... REPENTuh Hu haha..caribou". 🤣
That's what I pick up, too. lol. Brad seems to like alternative, indie rock, garage rock, post-punk and punk . Punk influenced music. Unique, unorthodox, off beat. Loosely structured, based music. Fun and quirky. But, Lex is getting used to it and likes some alt/indie rock and punk. She likes new wave (she loves the synths and dance pop and punk rock influence), post-punk, goth, and early grunge which is all punk rock influenced. They both like bass guitars, alt rock, post-punk is usually heavy and funky on the bass guitar. So give her some time. But, we all know that Lex likes Pixies, too! lol True, that she likes more blues based rock (hard rock and early metal) and classical music and jazz music influenced music, like metal which typically is more tightly structured, more sophisticated playing/sounds, more technical, melodic, serious, more coordinated, better singing/vocals, long fancy guitar solos, etc.
You should listen to their song ‘Gigantic’. It’s one of my favorite Pixies songs. I think. B-Rad will dig it. I also think he’ll like the lyrics from their song ‘I’ve Been Tired’, since he likes the randomness of their lyrics.
You nailed it.! Pixies are so unpredictable and they have an amazing rad sound! And Lex said the guitars sounded like Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain loved them ! Good ear! I'm glad you discovered this awesome band!
When "Nevermind" came out Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson congratulated Nirvana on their "fine Pixies album." LOUD-quiet-LOUD was an effective approach for the right bands.
Y’all want weird and random, check out violent femmes. My absolute fav VF’s songs are Add It Up & Kiss Off. Honorable mention is Country Death Song. When I was a teenager I had a cool friend who had a bunch of pre-grunge music like Violent Femmes & Pixies. He also got me into riot grl bands like Bikini Kill & Sleeter Kinney. But my fav weird music is probably ween. They’re just such an interesting mix of beautiful & melodic & weird as fck. Like Baby Btch is a perfect example. It’s melodically pretty but also weird. The Mollusk is a nautical themed album and had one of my all time fav Ween songs on it, mutilated lips. Another beautiful song with fcked up lyrics. Also Banana and blow is another good example of their style. They’re just such a great band.
I LOVE that you're doing the Pixies! For some reason, you haven't done their biggest hit yet: "Here Comes Your Man" or, perhaps their second biggest hit, "Gigantic."
I first heard this song many years ago and turned it off half way through thinking what the crap lol.. years later i love it, it shows that you shouldn't always take the lyrics to seriously over the music. I love this song now.
One of the all-time great bands! Doolittle's a classic. A must-listen to album from start to finish. I'd also recommend "Wave of Mutilation", "Velouria" or "Alec Eiffel".
Meant to be "challenging" to logic, these lyrics create a mood, imao. They work like a zen koan: suck you in but don't offer an obvious way out.... Frank Black/Black Francis was/is one of the best screamers out there! Joey Santiago's edgy guitar riffs, Kim Deal's catchy basslines. These are reasons to listen, not necessarily for a coherent narrartive! hahaha!

now you hit where i live! alternative music at it's best! "U Mass" "Velouria" "Hey" " Wave Of Mutation"! ( Pavement will send you into another Galaxy!)
Lex got it straight away tho, the sound. Pixies we’re a huge, HUGE influence on Nirvana
Pixies rule! Kim Deal from the Breeders was in The Pixies !! Check the song 'Debaser'.
Ohhhhhhhhhh! this is what Bloodhoung Gang were playing on in The Roof is On Fire when he goes ' This honky's gone to heaven'
"Not many people bought a Pixies album. But the ones who did started their own band."
This is just a rip-off of a quote made about the Velvet Underground.
The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
The Pixies were one of many bands influenced by the Modern Lovers (Jonathan Richman is a genius).
I'm going with my partner in December to see THE PIXIES at the auckland town hall 1.500 capacity and the Acoustics in this old Lady are Awesome this will be our third PIXIES GIG and the FIRST in a small venue not a stadium I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT I'M GOING TO BE A PIG IN SHIT HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY 🤘
This is Beatles like genius.
The Pixies "Gigantic" was their banger in 1988. Their Surfer Rosa album was glued to my turn table for half of that year.
Gouge Away, No 13 Baby, River Euphrates are just a few I’d recommend. These guys are legends.
Lex, nirvana sounds like them :) they came first and were hugely influential on Kurt Covain. Without the Pixes, they’d be no Nirvana - Cobain said
The part when - five six seven heaven, has been stuck in my head for weeks, first time I've heard it.
Alternative gonna alternative. When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
The Pixies, MADE THAT SHIT WORK! ........ Yup.
One of the greatest bassists of all time, the angelic Kim Deal...
I like how Lex looked kinda weirded out by the song while Brad was laughing.
It took me years to get this band but I kept listening and once you get it... Oh my golly!
Rossa oh oh oh oh rossa ..huh hu. 😂
And then the next thing you know…
Truly adorable and satisfying to see Brad chuckle in pure joy. ♥️ Y’all make me happy. Thank you.
Pixies are classic alternative rock. If you saw the movie Fight Club the Pixies were singing the ending song with Tyler and Marla Singer. "Where is my mind." I always liked "Here comes your Man."
i love pixies. one of the few bands i love equally as faith no more and mr.bungle. this band is so energetic and raw, and crazy. frank black abstract lyrics are fun and so interesting to hear and even guessing what hes says is fun when not reading. lol
Pixies are awesome. This song is great poetry.
Love Brad's reaction and Lex's "dad jokes are unpredictable" comment too! This is what Pixies do to you!
Lex hit the point. Nirvana started out as a Pixies cover group, a little known fact.
Pixies are one of those bands like the Beatles. You really have to listen to their whole catalogue to appreciate their greatness and influence on rock music. Probably the most influential band of the last 30 years.
Brad is digging it! For me The Pixies is the pill I took to start painting and opened my mind.
This brings me back to high school so hard. While I have listened to all the Pixies albums countless times, Doolittle is always my favorite.
If you think this is wierd, can't wait to see you hearing "Bone Machine", "Vamos" or "Indie Cindy".
Literally anything from their first 3 albums.
Speaking of weird and Bone Machine, Brad and Lex have to check out Tom Waits.
Subbacultcha
Mr. Grieves.
@@Blisteryn nah, Levitate Me or Caribou.
Believe it or not: Next to the Beatles, the Pixies are the most influential band of all time. (And yes, they're very fun/funny)
Brad loves Pixies, me too, they are so original, atemporal and different...
All their first three albums are a must to listen from beginning to end.
But, we all know that Lex likes Pixies, too! lol
True, that she likes more blues based rock (hard rock and early metal) and classical music and jazz music influenced music, like metal which typically is more tightly structured, more sophisticated playing/sounds, more technical, melodic, serious, more coordinated, better singing/vocals, long fancy guitar solos, etc.
You should listen to their song ‘Gigantic’. It’s one of my favorite Pixies songs. I think. B-Rad will dig it. I also think he’ll like the lyrics from their song ‘I’ve Been Tired’, since he likes the randomness of their lyrics.
Was there a more influential band for 90’s alternative than the Pixies? I think every Seattle grunge band lists them as an influence.
That song is a work of art.
This is my favorite Pixies song. I regret nothing.
You nailed it.! Pixies are so unpredictable and they have an amazing rad sound!
And Lex said the guitars sounded like Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain loved them ! Good ear! I'm glad you discovered this awesome band!
Excellent point about unpredictable. Makes it more interesting.
When "Nevermind" came out Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson congratulated Nirvana on their "fine Pixies album." LOUD-quiet-LOUD was an effective approach for the right bands.
Smashing Pumpkins also did it from the get go , from Gish and most obviously the Today song that broke them into the big time!
This reminds me of The B-52’s, but without the fun music.
Kim Deal sublime backing vovals adds so much to Francis's brilliant voice. Add in the great instrumentals and hey presto, magic ensues.
The Pixies get into your brain and tickle it. It's like how the odd delivery of Cake's singer gets in there and just kills your expectations.
I love when songs make Brad smile!
Classic song from a classic album
I first heard this song many years ago and turned it off half way through thinking what the crap lol.. years later i love it, it shows that you shouldn't always take the lyrics to seriously over the music. I love this song now.
Lyrics should always be secondary to the vibe. IMO. Unless they’re offensively sh1t.
It's not what he sings, it's how he sings it
One of the all-time great bands! Doolittle's a classic. A must-listen to album from start to finish. I'd also recommend "Wave of Mutilation", "Velouria" or "Alec Eiffel".
Wave of Mutilation. Yes, please.
The song seems to be about the state of the environment in pollution and through hoke in the ozone layer leading climate change. And this was 1988/89.
gotto love the PIXIES
Meant to be "challenging" to logic, these lyrics create a mood, imao. They work like a zen koan: suck you in but don't offer an obvious way out.... Frank Black/Black Francis was/is one of the best screamers out there! Joey Santiago's edgy guitar riffs, Kim Deal's catchy basslines. These are reasons to listen, not necessarily for a coherent narrartive! hahaha!
Def worth warming up to. The 80's was a weird time, and imao The Pixies carried the torch when the rock flame was sputtering...
Really luvin the new music (new to you) trip. awesome:)
