Cake is one the most overlooked bands around. They're SO good.
100%
Too true broer...
One year later, this statement stays true.
Watching him perform is part of the joy of their cadence, it’s natural for him, not forced. Please try “Never there” by Cake
His cadence always sounds like he’s late for the song, but then he’s always in the right place at the end of the phrase.
It's like...wonderfully, hilariously Janky.
this is the art of musicians and performers that is being lost when music is made on computers.
The horns in "Never there" are🔥
I love that song!
The smile on Brad's face is priceless during this reaction 😄
I've enjoyed seeing Brad start finding music he really vibes with.
John's cadence is the icing on the Cake! Loved the standing O, first time seeing that from Brad. More Cake please, I have a sweet tooth. 😁
You should check out Never There next...
When it comes to Cake, keep diggin'. There's gold in them there hills.....
I've always loved this version. They absolutely killed it.
In the top 5 covers of all time.
Their cover of War Pigs is fantastic also.
i think its garbage
@@joesmith5159 No, it was definently Cake. Garbage sounds totally different
@@christhompson2006 funny
but the song sucks
FINALLY! Someone who truly appreciates Cake. Whew, the journey has been long but the destination is worth it. Welcome Brad, welcome.
Got to go the distance
I've never seen Brad so happy 😊. It's contagious. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.love it
Cake is amazing, definitely check out more music from them. I recommend "Comfort Eagle", "Nugget", "Italian Leather Sofa", "Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle", "Never There", or if you want another cover they did, their version of "War Pigs". Honestly you can't go wrong with any of their stuff
It’s a shame they haven’t put out an album of new material in ages. And yeah, that cover of “War Pigs” is wonderful.
Second "Italian leather sofa"
@@crescentfreshbret They did put out a single in 2018, Sinking Ship
Stickshifts and Safety Belts
Also check out "Winter". It literally gives chills.
Cake has never made a bad song. EVER. So damned jazzy. Gotta appreciate it ❤❤
"Never There", "Love You Madly", "Guitar", "Shadow Stabbing", "Italian Leather Sofa", "Symphony in C". All bangers!! Love Cake!!
oh man, symphony in C is the best. that whole record really. not a bad song on there.
"opera singer". the best.
Cake is cool. My favorite songs from them are "you turn the screws" and "never there"
Sheep go to heaven is a great song too.
"Shut the fuck up"
One of the best cover songs ever. Like you all said, they made that their own!✌️✌️✌️
Such a huge catalog of great music. Keep the Cake coming!
One of THE BEST covers ever. Completely made it their own and BETTER. 😎
Brads laugh was the bomb! I laughed so hard Thank you for that ! It’s great to see you loosen up a bit.
My favorite line: "Do y'all remember the original?". Lol. Love how you said you'd choose this song over the original ❤️ CAKE is one of my favorite bands out there! Sooo underrated for how amazingly talented they are!
Finally finally! Brad found a song he loved. Never thought it was going to be “Cake”
Lounge lizard vocals. Great.
I'm glad you gave this a standing ovation. Cake are some of the best musicians from the modern age, most underrated band of all time imo.
YEEAAHH!! More! More! How about "Stickshifts and safety belts" , for a complete change of pace?
The Bass LINE in this song is awesome!!! .
Soooo fucking good. I absolutely love this version. Really, really glad you finally did this one. Check out "Never there" and "Daria."
Edit: If you go to karaoke, it's actually really easy to get into the unusual cadence - it starts feeling natural. Problem is that if you are with other people somebody will invariably try to sing along to the Gloria Gaynor version and the whole thing will be a big mess.
Hell Yeah Daria
I like how he's deliberately off the tempo, and makes it work. Syncopation genius.
The cadence of his vocals is everything about this song! Love how he's slightly off beat on some of his delivery.. Happy to see that others get it too. So freaking great!
"comfort eagle" and " sheep go to heaven" are a couple of my fav Cake songs. They have a lot of great music but that is a couple of great ones to start with.
goats go to hell.
Their bass player has some legitimate funk in his lines!! It's so good!!
El bajo lo mejor del tema
'Friend is a four letter word' and Comfort Eagle are my all time favorites. More Cake please!
Brad is right, it is a fantastic cover.
Cake were a great group and very talented musicians.
Also they have their trademark that make the group instantly recognizable, mainly the lead vocal delivery, their gorgeous and very bombastic baselines and a lot of brass used in their songs. Also they always have nice melodies and do great covers.
Other gems worth listening, Never There, The Distance, Frank Sinatra and their quite unconventional but fantastic cover of Black Sabbath War Pigs.
Thanks for reacting!! This song. just gets better & better & better then it ends.
More Cake, please. The bass line brings that funk.
Edit: that cut at the end was the poster of the song, the song has a better resolution at the end; just a few seconds more but definitely worth it.
CAKE was so much fun. I remember exactly when I bought this CD and it brought back memories if where I was in my life. But then again I love music. I love watching you guys. Such a great channel. And I'm damn old too. Lol.
Love this version of this song. Great bassline, the horns kicking in strong at the end.
My favorite song from my favorite band. They have a distinct and original sound.
Wow! Never seen a standing ovation from Brad before. I'm shocked, it's like spotting something as rare as an albino peacock.
Yooooooo a Brad standing ovation?!? That just made me so happy. Have a good week y'all!
Cake just makes me happy. I enjoy a lot of music. But very few musicians just make me feel happy.
Never seen Brad with so much emotion to a song, impressive.
Cake is one of my all-time favorites, you need to check out “sheep go to heaven goats go to hell” This is one of my favorite Flows in any song I’ve heard, they’re so funky and quirky they are absolutely amazing
Good taste. I think it's their best song.
One of my absolute favorites that my band covers!!!!!
I remember when Cake would play every weekend for $6 around town and bring out a full horn section...their flyers for the show were seemingly everywhere. Always a fun live show..
They were really well backed middle class kids I think, just given the freedom to go out and do what they want and some interesting happens that way 😅
Cake was so unique. Love that album.
“Dime” is my favorite Cake song. You should def do that one next. The lyrics are so clever.
Wow, that was the first time for me seeing Brad vibing more right from the start than Lex, and he was right, this cover is great beyond imagination! I don't know that many other songs by Cake, and those I know I don't like as much as I love this one, but here we have an absolutely incredible masterpiece! I've been loving this from the first time I listened to it about 20 years ago, and still do, and come back to it whenever I need something really uplifting. This for me might be on a playlist of my 20 most beloved songs ever! Great reaction, thank God you got it! :D
I LOVE the guitar work in this cover, never gets old, especially at the end mixed in with the trumpet.
Brad Loves It!!?! I'm so happy that you all 3 knew the orig.... I could tell even Berto knew!!!!
Cake was misrepresented and lumped in with other bands they had no business being next to. At the time I didn't get it.
A few years later a friend was like "dude, Cake is great." And I gave it another chance and agreed.
If you like Cake, I'd highly, highly HIGHLY recommend "Let Me Go".
Pretty much everything off the Prolonging The Magic record is pure gold. Alpha Beta Parking Lot is another fave of mine, but the whole record is impeccable.
KEEP. THIS. CHANNEL. GOING. PLEASE.
Italian Leather Sofa is a classic Cake masterpiece.
Cake's cover of "War Pigs" is also very much worth a listen.
This is so awesome. Cool, sophisticated and funky! I love that version! 😍👍
I think this is the biggest reaction I have ever seen from Brad. Awesome.
A few Cake songs that I haven't seen others suggest yet: "Frank Sinatra", "Hem of Your Garment", and "Opera Singer". Also "Nugget", but language warnings for that one. Most of those are more album tracks than singles, but I love them all.
"The band is most often noted for four things: the prominence of DiFiore's trumpet lines; McCrea's ironic, sarcastic lyrics; his "droll, deadpan ... monotone" vocals; and the use of the vibraslap. DiFiore's trumpet work originated with McCrea's desire for a second melodic instrument to go with a song he had written; "A lead guitar playing those lines would have been really hokey. I like it when it's a contrapuntal thing, where the guitar is doing one melody, the vocal is doing another melody, and the trumpet plays this third melody. If the music can be transparent enough, you can hear all three at the same time." "
Now do "Never There"!
A friend of mine told me she wants this played at her funeral (whenever that happens) and I thought yeah... I'm stealing that.
Cake is one of those bands that sounds just as amazing live as they do on their albums.
Italian Leather Sofa, Perhaps/Perhaps/Perhaps, Stickshifts & Safety Belts, really the whole Fashion Nugget album
Seen them live and that’s just how he sings, and it’s fantastic.
They are still my top live show of all time. So fun.
Loved the standing O!!
Now THAT'S a reaction! That's what reaction videos are all about! Love this one ❤️
This band's flow is like being a socially awkward person, but you're trying to play it cool and be normal at a party. I love this band.
Interesting take! I find it the other extreme; just so much confidence that they almost don't care if you like their stuff or not. They're doing something really cool that they really enjoy, and you can hop on or stay behind, but they're going.
I remember seeing an old video of a live performance by The Doors, and Jim Morrison had something of a similar vibe. He stood perfectly still as the song started, kinda leaning on the mic stand. In anyone else, it would look like a person frozen in terror, but Jim just oozed authority. Couldn't tell you why, but the difference was striking.
there is (or was) also a nice video by CAKE to this song on youtube....the main video character is a "simple man"/worker driving a street-cleaning machine alone at night as his job, etc...the "atmosphere" makes the way this cover is done and sounds more understandable, i think....
Honestly, when you've heard this version enough you just MEMORIZE the cadence. Honestly, I can sing this one more accurately than I can the Gloria Gaynor version. HER version sounds weird to me at this point.
Yup, for all off us who have heard Gloria's version a million times and know the lyrics by heart, the cadence in this version is really easy to follow and sing along to. I got sick of the original cause it's been overplayed to death but I love this cover.
I've heard the Gaynor original, and it's great (though admittedly before my time, so my exposure is kinda minimal), but when I think of this song, this version is the only one I can hear in my head.
I was at a bar once that had one of those jukeboxes that you could pick songs from your phone and play. I played this version of I will survive and watched the wtf expressions on peoples faces when they realized what it was. You can tell they enjoyed it more as the song progressed.
I believe Gloria Gaynor said she absolutely hated this cover of the song. It is the best cover, I enjoy the bass line.
that bass is so on the pocket... what a great band
I absolutely love this cover Cake did. This is one of those songs that sound better sung by a different person / band. The horns are so perfect with this
I worked onstage at a multi-band concert at George Mason U. Cake was one of the bands. Only 3 guys in the band so the guitar player also played trumpet. They put on a great show.
I feel like Beck probably has some Cake in his playlist, and vice versa.
Could have said it better. "A cover is a risky thing to do." it really is. What drew me to this version of this song is the funky bass throughout it. I play bass and it took me a long time to learn this version. But it just flows with so much feeling. Love it.
It is a really complex bass line.
I used to play this with a band that never really went anywhere. This and a bunch of sublime covers. So fun
That trumpet that comes in is really close to "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky. I think it was Maynard Ferguson.
One of the greatest covers of all time, in my opinion, from one of the greatest albums of all time. Anything on Fashion Nugget would be great for you guys to check out. They actually do two other covers on there: one of Willy Nelson’s “Sad Songs and Waltzes” and one of the old standard “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps,” and they’re both great… but I’ve never heard the originals, so I can’t make a comparison.
They were really good live. I saw them open for No Doubt on their Tragic Kingdom tour ..97 I think. First big concert for me . Think I had only been to some punk battle of the bands stuff at that point .
I believe that is the first time I’ve seen Brad enjoy music.
Italian Leather Sofa is another of many good Cake tunes.
COMFORT EAGLE !!!!! my favorite CAKE song by far.
I forgot how much I loved Cake. Saw them several times live. Such a fun band.
His singing style in this song is like he’s periodically looking down at the lyrics.
You can't go wrong with cake!
The rhythmic guitar part at the end and then the trumpet is the best part of this song. Their instrumental interpretation of the original basically.
I had two friends in college who would play this (and other songs) on sousaphone and banjo when we had parties. It was awesome, this song will always bring back great memories.
Love Cake! Hope you will react to more from them! I'm pretty sure you already did going the distance.
I love the bassline in that song
Brad, I think you’ll like the song “Friend Is A Four Letter Word” off the same album “Fashion Nugget”. Deep meaning and makes you think, similar Cake cadence too. Album is 🔥
That is def their best album. Super dope! I agree, Friend is a really good song
One thing that makes CAKE automatically stand out in today's music scene is that they have a trumpet *in the band*. Who even uses horns these days (other than sampled).
I would love to see you do reacts to Originals vs. Cover and see which you like best and why. Some good ones might be:
Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder and RHCP)
All Along the Watch Tower (Bob Dylan, Jimi, and U2)
Country Road (John Denver and Toots & The Maytals)
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac and Miley Cyrus)
Black Magic Woman (Fleetwood Mac and Santana)
Twist and Shout (The Isley Brothers and The Beatles)
Got to Get You Into My Life (The Beatles and Earth, Wind & Fire)
Babe, I'm Gonna Leave you (Joan Baez and Led Zep)
Dazed and Confused (Jake Homes and Led Zep)
I Fought the Law (Bobby Fuller Four and The Clash)
Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash and Social Distortion)
Jolene (Dolly Parton and The White Stripes)
Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack and The Fugees)
Come on Eileen (Dexys Midnight Runners and Save Ferris)
The Boxer (Simon & Garfunkel and Mumford & Sons)
HE'S A SKA MAN! I KNEW IT!!!
One of my faves from Cake. They are one of the great unique bands of our time.
This is one of the rare cases where the cover is better than the original. This is from the album “Fashion Nugget” and every song is great if you listen to it in order in its entirety. I used to cruise in the summer jammin this album on repeat daily for years during the summers. Cake is awesome and this version of the song is their vibe. One of a kind. I really thought Brad especially would love Cake and so far he’s loved them all. And he stood up and clapped 💪
"How do you remember this cadence!?"
At this point I couldn't say, but hearing the original feels wrong now! XD This is just how it is for me now! 😅
Seen them many times in concert and it’s always entertaining and different. They can play.
Can't get over the fact that brad's brother looks like a mini version of him. Like they're pokemon and brads the evolved form of his brother lol
you need to watch them play this live at Woodstock
I love this cover. You should also check out Cake's song called Short Skirt, Long Jacket. I believe it was made for a TV show called Chuck.
Please do "Never There" and "How do you afford your rock and roll lifestyle".
One note guitar solo FTW!
Awesome cake songs to check out: meanwhile rick james
Commissioning a Symphony in C
Opera singer
Agree Brad....that is a great version of that song....baseline was awesome and throw in the horns 👍
More Cake!
Sheep go to heaven,Frank Sinatra, Friend is a four Letter Word,Nugget (explicit),Guitar Man
Man, never heard this cover before but that was dope.
'Never There' is another good one by Cake. I also really dug, and I might be off on the title, 'Frank Sinatra.' If I got the song name wrong, I'm sure there's a Cake fan that knows what song I'm thinking of and can correct me.
You got it right my dude
I'M OLD. I REMEMBER WHEN GLORIA GAYNOR DID THIS HIT. BOUGHT THE RECORD AND PLAYED IT ALOT. MEMORIES BABY.
