This is my favorite song by Cake!!! Then its The Distance, Stick Shifts and Safety Belts and Short Skirt, Long Jacket. I love Cake!!
Stick Shifts and Safety Belts wasnt underrated early in Cake's career, but doesnt get the shine that it deserves. That said, I drove a Malibu from 1996 to 2007, so maybe I just remember it more fondly than others for that reason. Italian Leather Sofa is another song like that though....deservedly popular at the time, but seemingly underrated in 2022.
Stick shifts and safety belts is an amazing song
Only one I would add is Bound Away.

"Frank Sinatra" and "Friend is a Four Letter Word" are my 2 favorite Cake songs...but they are all great, really.
Friend Is A Four Letter Word and You Turn The Screws are as low key as pure fire can be. You dont know your face has been burned off until you go to shave the next morning.
These guys are poets. I love "Alpha Beta Parking Lot," "Walk on By," and "Sheep Go to Heaven" (and lots of others).

I've never met anyone who can't vibe to Cake. So bass lines are always so infectious. I'd recommend a song, but honestly anyone you listen to next will be solid and I'll give my thumbs up.

Cake is seriously one of my favorite bands. To get the reaction of two people that I adore is a nice treat.
I was living in Sacramento, California when this band came out. They are from there so their music was played a lot on the local radio stations.
Cake is so fun, and they know how to groove!

I think their approach to song writing is that each song is written as a sing along. The live shows are incredible and Cake holds a spot in my top 5 live shows of all time.

"Commissioning a Symphony in C" is another great one to check out.
A lot of Cake's hits have the talking verses in them, but they do several songs where they sing the whole way through. Check out "Sad Songs and Waltzes", "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts", "Frank Sinatra", "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" - they're really good musicians with a great sense of comic timing and they have a diverse repertoire!
Cake are such fun! Despite their lyrical content usually being the standard relationship problems, theyre just so damn catchy! Its just about impossible to dislike their music, and very hard to find a bad track.

@@ericzogas128 A LOT of bands did that. Grateful Dead are notorious for that. Nirvana. Cake too… if they say anything coherent, its often relationship stuff, but ya, it seems just as often it’s nonsense.

Cake is so unique. Odd catchy. Rap, talking, half singing in his songs and very cool instruments. Acquired taste, but rubs on you after awhile. Like Beck, Incubus, Butthole Surfers, some of Beastie Boys stuff. Talented.

Comfort Eagle (faster and more towards the rock genre)

I am 48 years old and this was my sons 1st concert when he was 7! Only concert i ever been to that had a range from 5y olds to 80 year old people! Great band! Do their song Frank Sinatra! My sons favorite song!

Most definitely. They played wheels at a show that I saw, didn't have strong feelings about the song before, but after seeing them do it live it's one of my favorites.

Rock N' Roll Lifestyle is another great Cake tune.
Of the songs they haven't listened to, I'm guessing that "Mr. Mastodon Farm" will be Brad's favorite. It's the best mix of all the elements that he likes. "Love You Madly" will be another they love.

Since you enjoy Cake, I'm gonna recommend They Might Be Giants. Most folks consider them "College Rock." But they are one of the more Unique bands out there. And one of them plays the Accordion, like Weird Al.

When this came out in 98, I wasn’t the best about answering my cell phone. My husband would sing this chorus to me. I finally bought the “never there, you’re never, ever, ever there” for his ringtone on my phone. After that, I picked up more often. 😁

Ive never seen Tool in concert (Janes Addiction either...my two biggest regrets), but I HAVE seen Cake...March of 02 in The House Of Blues (small venue) in Las Vegas. I already knew Cake and had a laundry list of songs I wanted to hear. They played every one of them, plus 2 more..."I Bombed Korea" and "Mr Mastadon's Farm"...both of which are on my Top 5 Cake Songs list now. It was EXCELLENT and so nice to enjoy it with my girlfriend at the time (later my wife) while on vacation (having no idea they'd be in Vegas at the time and catching them on a whim). The whole Cake catalog is very good, but there are still a TON of GREAT songs by Cake left for Brad and Lex to get into.
