Now you've done the Breeders, you have to get round to the Pixies! Kim Deal was in both - 'Gigantic' is a good track featuring her vocals, but really one can't go wrong with anything from Surfer Rosa or Doolittle ('Where Is My Mind?', 'Debaser', 'Monkey Gone to Heaven', etc).

You just put exactly what I was going to write. Also Brad needs to get his brother round for some of the Pixies tracks like Oh My Golly, Vamos etc, he can translate the Spanish for them. But starting with Gigantic which is in English would be nice.

The "Last Splash" album is great. Kim Deal (vocals, guitars) used to play bass in the PIXIES and her voice added so much to the sound of that band. Listen to "Driving on 9" if you want to hear more of her voice. It's a beautiful song off the same Breeders album.

My favorite Kim Deal quip is from Kim Gordon- when she says Kim Deal’s voice is like cake. The way your voice sounds when you say “cake” but that was her WHOLE entire voice and it was so beautiful.
Kim Deal was the Chrissy Hynde of the late 80s & early 90s. Even in the Pixies she was ADORED beyond all measure. Just the ultimate in cool- and people saw and recognized that and couldn’t get enough of her! When Pod, Safari and Last Splash finally dropped- that was EVERYTHING Pixies fans had been dying for since Gigantic.
It’s folksy and odd but nobody else writes a tune like Kim Deal & co. Pod and Safari are my faves- but Last Splash was the ultimate summer album of ‘94 right behind Beastie Boys ill Communication. Everything about it reaks fresh sweet fragrant summer nights, hot sticky days around the city and whatever else.

its an interesting, synesthesia-like concept. I conflate colors with flavors, but Kim Gordon's point is spot-on, it is difficult to sound unpleasant when saying "cake", then it evokes mental imagery that do fit her voice. It is like candy in a way, a lullaby in voice, but with nice mid power, when she wants to engage it.

For me, it's… you cannot really describe it. It's not following any of the usual structures. Like… Pulp Fiction. Or Bohemian Rhapsody. Mixing shit so you can't really say what it is. It defies description. Oh, and it has lots of that "quiet loud" that the Pixies were/are famous for (that Kurt Cobain wanted to/did copy in Smells Like Teen Spirit).

Got to understand this song in the context of 90's grunge. The trashy guitars, the loud quiet loud thing the Pxies really made legendary...all girl band, Kim Deal front woman, all revolutionary at the time. And as everybody else said, you MUST delve into the warped, slanted dark, yet beautiful universe of the PIXIES now. My favourite "Monkey gone to Heaven", but also "Where is my mind" and "Velouria"...Can't do grunge without them.

I saw them at Lollapalooza '94 as well in San Diego. I don't think they finished one song. It was a hot day and the staff hosed down the front row with water. That created some mud. They got upset when mud was thrown at them by someone in the front row. They stopped the song and yelled at the crowd to stop throwing mud at them. Of course someone threw some more mud and they just walked off.

Sisters, Kim and Kelly Deal's second band after The Pixies. These girls are also jazz musicians so, unlike the Pixies, they employ their jazz skills. There's many variations of Punk, ie. Ethnic, Jazz, Funk and so on.

So happy you did a 90s live stream. I'm sorry I missed it, but that era is my jam. I'll keep tuning in to the new reactions!

For another great band from that time was Belly.

"Less music, more vocals" was not going to happen in the 1990s. Many alternative rock bands back then considered their vocals to be "just another instrument," so during production, they were mixed at the same level as the instruments, and because of that, the lyrics often got washed out and were harder to decipher.
Other examples of vocals as "just another instrument" are "I Want To Touch You" by Catherine Wheel, and "Stutter" by Elastica. "I Want To Touch You" is a bit of psychedelic rock where the vocals and instruments are both mixed low and produce an airy sound, and "Stutter" is a short, powerful, punk rock-ish kind of song, where the vocals and instruments are both mixed high and become a wall of noise.
Another distinctively 1990s phenomenon you'll hear in "I Want To Touch You" is experimentation with electric guitar feedback, creating different layers of sound. Live is another band that does this, often ending their songs with long-duration feedback effects, the most extreme example being the final 90 seconds of their song "White, Discussion," which features all their electric guitars producing different feedback noises.

I saw the same head bob I experienced when this song came out last year (or maybe a bit earlier than that!). You both were riding in the pocket. The groove in this tune is deceptive and infectious. And, yes, her voice complements the instrumentation perfectly. A simple, yet powerful, tune that belongs on any respectable road trip playlist.

OMG The Beeders were really good! Kim and Kelley Deal (twins) did this as a side project with Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson while they (Kim) were working with The Pixies (Kim) and Throwing Muses (Kelley) respectively. I saw Throwing Muses last public performance.
