"Yo…that bass. Feeding my soul." That's Ms. Kim Deal serving you dinner, Jordan. Enjoy.
Can't wait for you to hit "Where is My Mind". And of course they were a huge influence on Nirvana.
They have SO many amazing songs. They weren't huge mainstream hitmakers, but they are so incredibly influential on a lot of bands you like (Nirvana being one of them.) "Debaser", "Here Comes Your Man", "Where Is My Mind", "Gigantic", "Gouge Away"....the pit is pretty much bottomless here.
This band is the sound of my 20's. Even the eternal Bowie said in an interview that The Pixies was the most interesting band when they were active.
A bottomless pit, but also as towering as the Olympus Mons.
Absolutely! No. 13 Baby
@@SebastienT he actually said other than Sonic Youth
@@rightoftheline6521 You are right, I forgot to mention that he was talking about the two most interesting bands from that period: Sonic Youth and Pixies
The Pixies are very unique! A lot of the grunge 90s bands cite them as an influence. Some others of theirs that I really enjoy are "Debaser", "Where Is My Mind", and "Monkey Gone To Heaven".
Great choices.
Bowie was a big fan as he expresses at length in an interview worth watching, as is Radiohead who refused to let PIxies open for them at a festival, saying it should be the other way around. I lost a ticket to Pixies in '91ish when they had to cancel because U2 asked them to be their opening act. Would love see Alec Eiffel, UMass, Debaser... and more Breeders which was started by their bassist Kim Deals. You've reacted to Cannonball, and I'd follow up with Fortunately Gone, Doe, When I was a Painter...
Cactus, Gigantic, Tame to name a few more
Gigantic for sure!
Now you need some PIXIES - GIGANTIC in your life.
OMG LOVE THE PIXIES This Monkey gone to Heaven is a favorite
Nirvana, Weezer, and Radiohead were heavily influenced by the Pixies. The Pixies also have inspired many bands from the early 2000s as well such as Modest Mouse, Interpol, and Arcade Fire. They’re pretty much one first bands from the late 80s that set the tone for the 90s and early 2000s alternative bands. Kurt Cobain has even admitted that they tried copying what they were doing
Yes, tho Modest Mouse formed in the early 90s, and their first studio album was 1996.
@@chelsea747 true but they got more popular when they did Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which came out in 2004
@@chelsea747 "my heart's the bitter buffalo"
And also, Kim Deal rocks the planet.
It is fair to say without the PIXIES, we may have never had the Seattle Explosion and Grunge. As mentioned by the previous post...the most mentioned band by Radiohead, Nirvana, Weezer, etc., to openly say they were influenced by them and the Loud, Quiet, Loud approach to song writing, hence the title of their reunion documentary video...."Loud, Quiet, Loud" it's a real follow of them during their attempt to play together as the original members after 5 plus years. Please check it out it's awesome, and KIM DEAL is absolutely the GOAT of female Bass players (and it's not up for debate)
Congratulations!! You just found the origin of Alternative music
I'm so happy you both enjoyed this one! Their songs had a huge influence on the alt rock of the 90s. "Here Comes Your Man" & "Where is My Mind" are the two consistent hits, but also have to give a rec for the sincere "Letter to Memphis."
This and the Smiths
_Letter To Memphis_ always makes me feel strong and lucky.
I love Pixies, this whole album is fire.
Doolittle is, hands down, one of the best albums of the 80s.
Same. Pixies are the best
Where is my mind and/or Gouge away! Love the pixies!
The Pixies are an AWESOME band and live they are just mesmerising !!!!!! Other tracks you should listen to are Debaser, Where Is My Mind, Albert Eiffel, Monkey Goes To Heaven, Magdalena 116, All I Think About Now, La La Love You, Velouria, Gigantic, Havalina and Hear Me Out. This list should be a great start down the Pixies Rabbit Hole.
They got back together recently after a break and have new material out that I’ve not listened to so I’d be interested in what songs to listen to from that stuff too.
As always, keep up the awesome work and hope the kids, rest of the extended clan and yourselves are all well too xxxxx
The Pixies have some REALLY great JAMS..please don't wait 6 months before you give them another listen....
✌🙏❤
Impressive you two! This isn't one of the Pixies more accessible tracks, and you nailed how special it is! I agree with all the other recommended tracks, and would like to add Wave of Mutilation as well. And lastly, being an old New Englander myself, I can attest to the fact Alternative music in the 80s & 90s was thriving in this part of the US with the likes of these guys, the Breeders, Throwing Muses, Jonathan Richman, and to an extent Miracle Legion. But it comes back to the granddaddy of them all, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground.
It was in a James Gunn movie and there isn't many other songs from his movies they haven't done.
Love to see them do the Backyard by Miracle Legion, such an evocative song! As parents of young kids it might really hit them in the feels- because in 20 years that song is probably going to be how their kids feel about them, and it's probably how they feel about their parents too ♥️
Kim Deal, the original Bass player, has a twin sister who was also on a popular grunge girl band called "The Breeders".
It is hard to overestimate how influential the Pixies where and still are. Although they came out in the 80s they were very much the trigger for the indie Rock movement of the 90s.
They don't care who artists influence, I have been trying to get them to do Y&T for the longest time and they don't care that they influenced bands like Van Halen, Dokken, Sammy Hagar, Krokus and Winger.

the pixies are a very special band, that has been cited as a powerful influence by people like Kurt cobain of nirvana and thom yorke of radiohead
Kurt Cobain said that when they were recording Nevermind.
"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it.”
The bass player Kim Deal, is also the second vocalist. She’s a legend.
These guys were arguably THE proto-indie band. In the same way the Velvet Underground was not hugely popular but hugely influential in the 1970s so the Pixies were in the 1990s. Great songs to check out include Where Is My Mind, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away, Dig For Fire, Gigantic, Wave of Mutilation, Bone Machine, others.
Yes!! The Pixies always tickle the brain. Almost every grunge band and alternative band that came after would cite them as a top influence. Please don't stop with this song. Their easily most popular song is "Where is My Mind".
Good reaction. My first thought was: You all aren't ready for the Pixies, but you proved to be. Congrats, because back in the late 80s, I'd say most were NOT ready.
I'd come here to say the same thing but they totally proved me wrong!
The bass player is Kim Deal, who hails from my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. She still lives here. Kim and her sister Kelley Deal created the band The Breeders.
The Breeders are still active, as are Pixies with bassist Paz Lenchantin.
I saw the thumbnail and was like, that’s not the Pixies! You almost gave me a senior moment where I had to question my reality. I wouldn’t have started with this song, I would have done “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and then “Here Comes Your Man.” Do the videos to the songs. Doolittle is a must-own album. I saw the Pixies open for REM at Boston Garden and wish I still had the t-shirt from that show. What a fun time!
I'm still not sure who are the people in the thumbnail.
It's Slowdive, a shoegaze band
Thanks for naming the band, that was driving me crazy
Im of the opinion that the pixies and r.e.m. single-handedly invented the 90’s ....kurt cobain LOVED the pixies; this song is super special bc its not exactly typical pixies, but at the exact same time it SOOOO pixies, NO body else could conceive of a song like this, theres no one like them before or since. & part of what makes those strange harmonies so special is kim deal, their amazing, unique female bassist who always takes their trademark high harmonies to a sublime place....now, “typical” pixies is what it is because of their unique way of alternating from verse to chorus back to verse in a loud/quiet way....many bands before them & even classical composers used loudness & then quietness to express something, but the way the pixies utilized it is pretty f’n special; its known as the “loud/quiet dynamic”....and thats really where kurt & nirvana got it from, thats why i say the pixies invented the 90’s....they are truly great, ive been listening to them for 32 years & i always come back to them....great reaction, more please, keep delving the pixies!
You two probably don't realize it, but almost a year ago you reacted to Cannonball by The Breeders which is a side project of the woman in the Pixies. It's odd how Kim's first album without The Pixies sold more copies than all of the albums she did with The Pixies combined.
Jay: “is all their music dark and weird? “……..Yes.
That's the one and only legend, KIM DEAL on bass. Thanks for reacting to my favorite band. Check out 'Wave of Mutilation' or 'Velouria' or 'Where is My Mind' or 'Gigantic' enjoy.
Little fun fact for y’all the female back up vocals were done by the bassist Kim Deal who is the front woman for the the band The Breeders who y’all have done a reaction to a good while back. Next Pixies song to check out would be Dig a Fire, Gigantic, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and/or I Bleed
Another fun fact.Kim wasn't even a bass player when she joined the band. She even had to barrow a bass guitar from her sister Kelley, just to audition.
Another fun fact in sonic youths little trouble girl is sung by Kim gorden with backup vocals by none other than Kim deal
My favorite band. Btw, the photo isn’t of the band 😀 You can deep dive Pixies albums and you’ll see why they’re so influential.
Been waiting sooo long for you to get to The Pixies. I guess everyone will say to listen to "Where Is My Mind?" next, and that's a good one for ya. But my favorite songs that you may like too are "Caribou", "Gouge Away", and "No 13 Baby". Just so weird AND beautiful 💚
Pixies aren’t for everyone. ‘Where is my Mind’ is good one by them I think you’d like: it is on ‘Fight Club’ which is a movie you should check out.
These guys were one of Curt Cobain's favorites & one of mine as well. They are just so unique, there's really no one else quite like them. One of my favorite concerts was when I saw them as the opening act for U2 on their Achtung Baby tour. The Pump up the Volume version of their song "Wave of Mutilation," is Iconic & I've always loved their song "Here comes your man," as well.
I’ve never heard of these guys and now I’ve already downloaded this song to my playlist. Thank you for that.
Listen to "Silver" and "Where is my Mind", you'll love them if you liked this one.
Download the Doolittle album Dominic as the next step.
@@meganyounger4842 Not many people mention the song Silver but I love it. Such a strange cinematic Western vibe
Awesome choice! Such a great band. From them we got Kim Deal and the Breeders and also the Amps. Then we got Black Francis and the Catholics. Then there's Pigface. I personally love them, but it is highly subjective, lol.
So ahead of their time, 80's band but sounds like 90's, they influenced so many bands Nirvana included
The Pixies discography is incredible. I still haven't been able to get "Where is My Mind" off my playlist for the past three decades.

Wave of Mutilation is a good Pixies song to check out. You have heard the bassist before - Kim Deal and her twin were the front women for the Breeders
The Pixies were like Velvet Underground of the previous generation - not super well known at the time to the general public, very eclectic, but seemed to influence many of the major bands that came after.
"Where is my mind" is the song to do from them or "Here comes your man"
They are basically one of the godfathers of grunge. Tho nirvana, Alice In Chains, soundgarden, Pearl Jam are the ones accredited, it’s the pixies, sonic youth, violent femmes, etc that influenced(heavily) the bands that became known for starting grunge.
I never heard this song before, thanks for introducing me to it! I get a cross between The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and The Violent Femmes.
What a great description, yeah, I can see that.
I thought it was just me that got The Rolling Stones vibe 🤭
If you ever build up enough interest for this group, there's a great documentary film about the band called "Loud Quiet Loud" (which is generally their metier in terms of how many of their singles progress. Old concert footage, their reunion at one of the Coachella shows, interviews with other musicians about how influential Pixies were.
Never heard them before. Kinda odd, but I liked it. So, I’ll give you another “weird vibe” artist. Björk an Icelandic singer, And everything about her to me is unusual. The first word I think that comes to mind is eclectic. Her accent, her lyrics, her voice, the instruments, and most particularly her videos which frankly often just creep me out. Two of her most accessible songs I’ve heard are Jöga and Hunter. She often has orchestral music, but beyond that you’d be hard-pressed to recognize an instrument. She uses a lot of electronic synthesized sounds. On Hunter for example the drums are so fast and rhythmic I think it would be difficult for a person to play live.
I had to look this one up - it was off of Doolittle, which came out in 1989. I've heard this before, but never on the radio. Interesting song to start with, but definitely a rabbit hole worth diving into. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is the one I remember most, as well as "Here Comes Your Man", "Velouria", and "Letter to Memphis". They also did a great cover of "Head On", but I think you should react to the original version of that song by Jesus And Mary Chain first. That is an 80s alternative CLASSIC.
Check out some of the early 80's punk/goth/alternative - this is a great rabbit hole to go down. You played some Depeche Mode, Cure, The Cult and Siousxie & The Banshees but they have a lot of songs in their catalog to continue on with as well.
- Social Distortion - "Story of My Life", "Ball & Chain"
- Concrete Blonde - "God is a Bullet"
- The The - "Infected"
- The Dead Milkmen - "Punk Rock Girl"
- Echo & The Bunnymen - "The Killing Moon", "Lips Like Sugar", "The Cutter"
- The Psychedlic Furs - "Pretty In Pink" from the movie soundtrack", "Ghost in You", "Love My Way"
That awesome bass is played by Kim Deal, whose angelic voice is also in a load of Pixies songs. Very much recommended any track and sending big hugs 🤘❤️
Grunge and alternative grew out of Punk rock scene of the 70's and 80's. Punk is one genre you guys haven't explored, that I would like to see. I think you reacted to a Ramones song, which is the perfect place hear Punk's origin, and I think the next logical place would be The Sex Pistols, with "Anarchy in the UK" or "God Save the Queen". For later music, Green Day brought their Punk influence into the 90's and early 2000's to become one of the most successful bands of the era, that surprisingly, you haven't touched yet. For them, I would start with something like "Basket Case" or "Longview". So many great songs to choose for them, and please react to the official videos for those.
Dave Grohl has talked about "ripping off the Pixies" (his words) and their loud-quiet-loud dynamic. And I don't know if it was Dave or Kurt Cobain who, when they were recording Nevermind, were aiming for selling as many records as the Pixies-- such a major influence on Nirvana and so many other grunge bands. So roght when you say they were ahead of their time
A weird but cool vibe pretty much sums up Pixies. You guys have gotten so good at picking up on details and influences. Amber, you're right on the💲about the indie alternative sound. A number of artists from 90s alternative bands cite them as an influence, especially Kurt Cobain.
I saw them play the GA Theater in Athens, GA in 1991. Awesome concert. I'm glad you guys are giving them a listen.
Kim Deal's killer bass line here is so fun to play. The Pixies had so many excellent songs -- welcome to the rabbit hole!
You put it exactly right when you said ahead of their time. They were a major, major influence on 90s alternative music. They just came along a little too soon to get the public recognition that they deserved.
When the Pixies broke up, bassist and backup singer Kim Deal formed a new group with her sister Kelley - The Breeders - and guitarist Frank Black became part of 10,000 Maniacs.
Frank Black was not part of 10,000 Maniacs. He recorded several solo albums after the Pixies split.
@@thisnicelady You are correct, 73 year old memory at work
My very first concert with my friends at age 15 when they opened up for Love & Rockets in KC in 1989. I've seen them 5 more times after that and their live shows are really good.
Wow! Haven't heard Love & Rockets mentioned in few moons. Still have one of their CD's and some Pixies on an old MP4 player from back in the day.
OMG! Love and Rockets! I remember when the lead singer, David J, was in Bauhaus with Daniel Ash! (I would die if J&A listened to "So Alive" by L&R or "Get Out of Control" by Daniel Ash!)
@@Shrykespeare Or Sanity Assassin by Bauhaus, and Go! by Tones on Tail... Daniel Ash's side project before Love & Rockets. One of the most creative guitarists when you look at his entire catalogue. Up there with Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood.
@@csn10And don't get me started on Peter Murphy's stuff. "Cuts You Up" is still as great today as it was in 1990. "The Sweetest Drop" is also still a great listen.
@@Shrykespeare Love Peter's imagery, poetic lyrics, and vocals... with Bauhaus too of course, but his solo work is definitely more accessible musically for a first listen. I'll fall with your knife, Strange kind of love, Marlene Dietrich's favourite poem, and his Pere Ubu cover are to this day on heavy rotation.
One of my all time favorite bands! Glad you guys got a chance to check them out. Great song to start!
🤘😎🤘
My favorite Pixies quote went something like. "Not many people had a Pixies album while growing up but everyone who did started a band"
Wow! Pixies' music legit blew my young, impressionable mind when I came across them as a regular late night Mtv watcher in the late 80's. That was when all the weird stuff I liked and could vibe to got played. Pixies were next to The Replacements as the most anti-Mtv band you could still catch sometimes on Mtv. It was always special.
Yes, a deep dive is definitely in order, as Pixies have many sides of strange, mysterious, and weird. They do songs about UFOs, old Luis Bunuel films, and out of body experiences. So trippy! As many have mentioned, bass player/singer Kim Deal is their secret weapon, providing their signature sound: what singer/guitarist Charles "Frank Black aka Black Francis" Thompson called a cross between Peter Paul & Mary and Black Flag.
Here's hoping for a reaction to "Here Comes Your Man", "Monkey Gone to Heaven" or "Dig For Fire".
Hey, the Pixies with Hey on this channel! Great choice and great reaction guys! You already heard the female voice - here in the background - when you did "Cannonball" by The Breeders. She is the one who's responsible for that great bass sound! For more Pixies: "Where Is My Mind?" and "Here Comes Your Man". They are both fun, happy songs.
Pretty much nailed it Amber. Like so many commenters have said they were super influential to the 90s indie, alt and grunge scene. When you’re really in the Pixies world it’s hard to stop listening to them and they are a very odd mood. I got into them only recently (last couple years) and I wasn’t big into them right at the start but I eventually got hooked
You guys handled this really well, because it is a bit of a weirder one. I agree with lots of others who suggest you check out Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man, Where is My Mind, and Bone Machine (another weird one, but worth it).
"Cool in a strange way" is a perfect description of Pixies. Definitely check out the other suggestions. They are a band with a unique sound, but also not one you can necessarily label.
The Pixies are a very cool yet very odd band
So true, yet they are on my MTB playlists.
Frank Black is the lead singer. Two good songs are "Here Comes Your Man", and "where is my mind?" . The Deal sisters,in the band, went on to form the Breeders after the Pixies disbanded. You reacted to their song "Cannonball" a while back
This is my favorite song of theirs. Good choice! ❤
The Pixies are so classic and their sound was so unique. Loved this era of music because there was so much diversity and artistic freedom.
I've always liked such a wide variety of music I never thought I could definitely say that one band was my all-time favorite, but that was the designation I bestowed on the Pixies years ago. Pixies are the best! Joey Santiago's lazy and crazy guitar solo here is an all-time classic, as is Kim Deal's naked basslines. As for the strain on Charles' (aka Black Francis) voice: Wait 'til you hear some of their other hits. "Gouge Away" "Debaser" "UMass". There's even a little grit in the mellow masterwork of Where is my Mind."
Band in the thumbnail is Slowdive, another great band you should check out.
I'm glad you sometimes depart from radio-friendly pop, country, etc. And I'm glad you like it!
I'm honestly surprised this was recommended as an introduction to Pixies... granted for those of us who heard their stuff in order of its release and loved it despite its unusual quirkiness... we were already fans for life of this amazing band. I would have to say that if trying to introduce someone gently to the pixies there are two or three better choices from this time frame but the album that is most commercially accessible to all listeners would have to be Trompe Le Monde. Pixies have influenced many bands and the members have been connected to several acts the top three of which would be Frank Black, The Breeders, and The Amps. One of their most popular songs, possibly the most popular is Where is my mind, which has been featured in several movies and television shows as well as some video games either as the pixies version or one of the over a dozen other cover versions. Most famous of these would be in the movie Fight Club (but I'm not supposed to talk about that). I hope you'll try some more Pixies.
thanks guys for basically welcome the beginning of the new era The Pixes were one of the pioneers of the 90S alternative rock although they were formed back in 1986 a year before Nirvana but a year after Radiohead
The Pixies are in my top five favorite bands. Doolittle is a masterpiece of an album. Definitely listen to Debaser from this album followed by Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven. Then hit Break My Body and Gigantic from Surfer Rosa and their cover of Head On from Trompe Le Monde.
Love that you guys are hearing Pixies for the first time. They were at the leading edge of "Alternative Rock" in the 80s and, as previously stated, a MAJOR influence on 90s Rock.
They are known for their Loud-Quiet-Loud song structures & wildly quirky lyrics. Other songs worth hearing:
Bone Machine, Velouria, Is She Weird, U-Mass, Planet of Sound, Subbacultcha, The Sad Punk
Subbacultcha is one of my shortlist Pixies favorites, rarely cited by others. This song just tickles me to no end.
Pixies! You might check out some of their other vibes on "Where Is My Mind" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven."
Where Is My Mind. Perfect place to start with Pixies. But great music. I love them.
You absolutely have to listen to more Pixies. This unique band is extremely influential on so many 90's Indie Artists that have followed.
Pixies are my favorite band. I'd love to know what you guys would think about their song "Caribou". That was the first song I ever heard by them and was like OMG I need more! Your reactions are so much fun, thanks!
Great to see a Pixies reaction. Much, much more for you two to explore. (Brings me back to my college days in Boston 86-90 - seeing these guys in person many times and hearing them on the ONLY local commercial station to listen to at the time, WFNX).
More, please! :)
Yes, Pixies are always mysterious. Their most memorable song to me is "Where is my Mind". Anytime I hear that, I can't help but think of the movie "Fight Club". Not sure if you guys are ready for that movie on your other channel yet. lol

Dig For Fire, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Where Is My Mind, Gouge Away, Debaser, Letter To Memphis...the list is endless...
The bassist, Kim Deal is in another band called The Breeders that are also really good, great for a "Female Friday" reaction..
No doubt, one of my favorite all-time bands. Have seen them live a number of times. You guys nailed it too with the "indie alternative vibe" descriptor. And, yes, much of their music is quite "mysterious". The song you reacted to here is from Doolittle, probably their most popular album ever, but they've got so much more to offer. Another one you might like to try is "Velouria", one of my favorites. Their style has evolved considerably over the years. The lead singer's unique voice you're referring to is none other than the prolific Black Francis. The cool female voice is former bass player, Kim Deal, a noted lead singer of her own band, The Breeders, which I believe you guys have also reacted to.
Hey Okies. Once again you chose a great song. And once again you tap into my Okie roots and the summer I was mowing the lawn(a student needs cash for college) of a professor at OU. Her friend backed out last minute so she asked me to come with her to Dallas to see U2 Zoo Tv Tour with Pixies opening for them. I did not hesitate, but sadly I was wearing a sleeve cut out two sizes too big Flaming Lips shirt and old shorts and torn up sneakers. Hardly concert worthy…but who cares. We get there and not only did she have tickets, we had right in front tickets. There was those on the ground in front, but the monitors and lighting set ups blocked their view a bit. We were front row slightly elevated over the people on the FG round so we had pure view to the bands. Pixies were amazing. U2 were great but I saw Bono’s huge bald spot and was crestfallen. Lol…rock gods don’t have those!!?? What a cool professor to let me go and create such memories.
Like many 80's/90's Indie/Alt.Rock fans I consider The Pixies to be one of the greatest bands of their generation, just immense, so powerful, I've seen them live several times and they just blow you away, incredible. I'd love to see you react to 'The Fall' and 'Violent Femmes' too.
The Pixies are classic!!! They have a huge following. They inspired so many bands. Great musicians too!
David Bowie - “I found [the Pixies] just about the most-compelling music outside of Sonic Youth in the entire 1980s....I always thought there was a psychotic Beatles in them."
My favorite Pixies songs are “Where Is My Mind”, and “Wave of Mutilation”. I usually found bands/songs from movies and these 2 aren’t any different.
The Pixies are freaking awesome. Try "Here Comes Your Man", "Where Is My Mind", or "Gigantic" (this one sung by bassist, Kim Deal) 🤘😁🤘
I think we just found two new Pixies fans! They are different, but in a very good way.
So glad you liked it. I LOVE the Pixies.
The bass player is Kim Deal - I think you reacted to Cannonball by The Breeders some time back. The Breeders was Kim's post-Pixies band. She sings some Pixies songs - I would recommend Gigantic. The Breeders also briefly included the angelic Tanya Donnelly whose band Belly has three amazing records. Tanya also sang in The Throwing Muses with her stepsister Kristen Hirsch. "Not Too Soon" is a fantastic Muses song. Can you tell I love this period of music? And I was an 80's metalhead.
Wow! Thanks for a new rabbit hole to dive into this weekend!! 🙂
Kurt Cobain credits them as highly influential on his songwriting.with Nirvana.
I'm always happy when I see a Tanya/Belly/TM shout out. Tanya is angelic, she is my favorite singer.
@@nadzee7101 I got to meet the whole band back in 1993 behind The Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill. Gail Greenwood was particularly awesome!
@@amelias.2509 Tanya also has several solo albums. Lovesongs for Underdogs is really great. I'd also recommend Bettie Serveert and Magnapop if you like female singers. Bettie Serveert's albums Palomine and Lamprey are amazing.
One of the better bands to come from that Nirvana era of the late 80’s-early 90’s.
A really great band to catch Live.. especially if you were lucky enough to have caught em when they first started touring in the late 80’s!
To me, this band shines best on tunes that ARE NOT their radio & MTV “hits”.
I know people love those songs, as I see mostly requests for that stuff.. but their early deep cuts and B-sides are the real treat, having spent hours spinning their full catalog.
Being a longtime fan, I’d like to make a few humble suggestions that really showcase some unique strengths of The Pixies.. from their debut EP “Come On Pilgrim” and their first full length LP record “Surfer Rosa”.
I see many are suggesting some pretty decent songs with Kim Deal (the bass player) singing. In that case I’d implore you to check out “Caribou”, thought it’s more of a duet (as many of their songs are), it really showcases Kim’s voice nicely, and it’s always been a really big crowd pleaser at Live shows.. another similar swooning song of lovelorn longing would be “Cactus”, though Kim isn’t in the forefront vocally as much as she is on “Caribou”.
On the other end of the Pixies spectrum is a SUPER FUN, high energy BANGER called “Oh My Golly!”, which just blazes along, bursts and bounces the listener along with the band through party town.
Lastly, the one tune that really grabbed my attention the first time I heard the band is “Break My Body”, a very raw and crunchy mid-tempo 80’s Pop Classic that is absolutely PACKED with passion and provocation. It’s a uniquely unshakable song that’s remained at the core of everything I love about this band, and regularly haunts me to this day.
Pixies are one of the bands from the late 80s that directly influenced Alternative and Grunge the most. They were extremely ahead of their time.
You should check out "Dig For Fire", "The Happening", "River Euphrates", "Where Is My Mind', "Bone Machine", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Debaser", or "Here Comes Your Man".
Hardly, alternative is a huge variation from grunge to Goth to melancholy mazzy star, they really were never so substantial to have the level of influence that you suggest. The vocals are such a feeble attempt at the rolling stones it is an absurd attempt at hero worship.

A simple google search proves me right. There have been citable quotes from members of the bands Radiohead, PJ Harvey, U2, Nirvana, The Strokes, Alice in Chains, Weezer, Bush, Arcade Fire, Pavement, Everclear, etc. that all credited the Pixies as huge influences to them.
Kurt Cobain himself said about Teen Spirit: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off Pixies. I have to admit it". He went on further to say that Nevermind and In Utero were attempts to recreate Surfer Rosa in a more dynamic fashion.
I've been a musician for over 37 years now, have worked in the industry in production, and other jobs...so I believe I know what I am talking about.
@hazi5961 I am 54 I have played the guitar since I was 8. Music is my passion, many styles and disciplines, my mother loved flaminco so I started in classical flaminco and classical as well as neo classical. I fell in love with the blues and Chet Atkins country style picking. As well as the Carter scratch. In high school I started leaning to blues Rock. Rory Gallagher. Gary Moore, Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy page etc. As for alternative, alternative is a catch all label for any group of musicians that could not be pigeon holed into the wasteland of glam metal or post modern punk. The 80s created a refugee of talent some great some not so much. For you the pixies are great to me they are not. If I want alternative Rock I prefer Live, Alaina Morrisette, Sarah Mclaughlin. Garbage. If by imitating and poorly done imitation of Mick Jagger which is what I hear and others have also heard trying hard to be one with their influencer Mick comes off really more duplication than the Avant-Garde they were shooting for. If you like them enjoy them, I am sure there are a lot of musicians that you and I probably could enjoy and have long conversations over. I am not going to say that I am open to everything the pixies were successful. I am just not a fan. I am probably a music snob, I am an exceptional musician and with that critical ear on my own music I am also critical of what I hear played. It is a reason why I praise AL Marconi. Jango Rhineheart, Patt Methany and a list of blues and tech players Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, etc. Guitar is my element, but I have played the Piano, Drums. Trumpet. Irish flute, penny whistle and the chanter. For the 90s I will stick with Mother Lovebone. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Green River, Alice and chains. Some Nitvana. Not a huge pop person, but that is just me. I don't hear much pixies in most 90s alternative.
We don't have to be cross I was merely and most likely less tactful than necessary but we can most likely agree on many artist. The pixies just won't be one. I liken them to the b 52's another band that really were. Not that impressive, for me I am looking for timber, melody rythym and harmony. Like I said I am a music snob but so forgive me if I offended you, true offense was not ever intended.
David Bowie, the king of weird, loved the Pixies music!
His cover of "Cactus" is [chef's kiss]
Yeah I'll say nite again Amber you would love Violent Femmes!! Especially if you like the quirkiness of the pixies!! Maybe check out "Gone daddy gone" by the Violent Femmes" you won't be disappointed!
YEAH!!!! FOR more great Pixies check out "Where Is My Mind", "Vamos" or "Caribou".
Hey my Okies, I just saw David Crosby just passed away. You might want to watch a Crosby, Stills and Nash in honor of him.
PIXIES! Great reaction J and Amber!! next song I guarantee you will love is - This Moneys Gone To Heaven. It’s got the same cool sinister vibe with awesome vocals by Francis and also Kim… that’s a definite second listen… then you need to Kim’s band on female fridays Cannonball or Divine Hammer
Monkey (not money)
Great comments below! All great choices, they had bigger songs than "hey" but I love it and was glad you picked it!
The Pixies were part of the soundtrack of my young teens. Glad y'all discovered them! I was going to suggest some songs but the others commenting have already assembled an excellent list, so I will just second their suggestions.
A wonderfully oddball band! I love their song, "Monkey Gone To Heaven".
