Most of the Jam's song were gritty ,hard hitting from an era of high unemployment and social problems were rife in inner city areas all over the UK, the late 70''s punk/ new wave era were really tough times especially for the young adults trying to find their way in life,I was part of that era as an 18 year old,and could relate very much to these songs,....paul weller and the Jam summed up this era perfectly

It’s a total Ray Davies mini pop rock opera.... it’s a stunning example how weller blossomed so quick

It's amazing, his growth between the first two albums and this.

Pete Townsend described this song as the most menacing song he has ever heard, the lyric was influenced by some leery business men in suits paying to much attention to Weller girlfriend at the time

Mod69 gave the immediate inspiration for the song but really, re: what started this conflict, as Paul Weller later sang, "Class War's real, not mythologized!"
Zaragon tries, really he does, but we end up with yet another example of "two nations divided by a common language".
"1988" - so I guess he's no fan of Confessions Of A Pop Group

Mr Clean is the protagonist from Down in The Tube Station, with the story told from the perspective of the thug.

I've never heard that before. Mr. Clean is apparently upper-class; I've always understood the guy in "Tube Station" to be lower middle-class or working class.

Weller came from a dirt poor family. They had an outside toilet to give you some idea. His resentment of the middle and upper classes stems from pure envy. He later wrote a song called Eton Rifles, Eton being a very posh school and seat of learning. Scathing as this song is about the privileged classes, Paul Weller when he had enough money actually sent his own kids to fee paying public schools. I think the narrative of Mr Clean is more from a predatory perspective like he'll outdo this guy one day.

Setting Sons the album which followed this was Weller's magnum opus in my view. Nothing he produced before of after this quite matches.

Mr Clean is the working class boy made good, working in the city, who still dislikes the middle classes.
He still remembers his working class roots.
