I think it's because this is not an interview but just an enjoyable chat between musicians exchanging stories and experiences without the same old lame questions (ok we all heard the stories of sultans and money by now)
I have loved this man and his band for about 45 years. I was born in London in 1974 and my dear belated dad Eddie introduced me to them in 1978 when I was four. It is so great to see Mark is still the most modest, kind and humble musicician out there.
Mark's playing and songwriting are lessons in touch, taste and melody. His album with Chet Atkns demonstrates his amazing ability on the guitar but what I love most is the restraint and lack of guitarist ego he shows in his songs. If it doesn't sound beautiful, he doesn't play it. Wonderful chap and an inspiration to me. 👍
Mark, your music and lyrics spread joy the world over. No one can get their guitars to make the sounds that you do. You are a gift to the world. I love you, and you are loved the world over.
Thank you so much for putting the full interview with Mark Knopfler on video and especially on RUclips, where people can not only watch this interview, but also make your podcast more well known across the globe. Please do the same with the new David Gilmour interview as well. No more waiting for the full video version. Thanks again !
Thank you so much for sharing this. MK is my favorite musician of all time, to me he's in a league entirely of his own and when Friday comes and I'm having my two 6-packs and a couple of spliffs after work I listen to somewhere between 30-40 of his songs before I even consider to put on another artist.
Wonderful stuff this. I dont think we will ever see Mark gig again, his hands just dont operate the way they once did. If you notice. Im happy to just listen to him talk about music and his music. Thanks all.
--at 77 years old I’ve drifted towards playing with fingers instead of hybrid pick/fingers, largely because of MK…he is king of tone, and it just feels so “organic” with fingers! Thanks, Mark 🎶🙏
This is the most un-guarded I've ever heard Mark be in an interview. Thanks for posting. His playing, when he was more guitar-focused in the '80s, on Alchemy and that amazing Wembley concert in '85 blew my mind. The Rockpallast concert from '79 too, with the early stripped-down line-up really showed the extraordinary quality of the playing. Pick was great too. I know not everyone gets it, but for my taste it's the best playing I've ever heard. I'd love to hear a Knopfler - Stewart Copeland collaboration. Stewart's drumming is mesmerising.
John Fogerty, Tom was John’s brother and CCR'S rhythm guitar player. Don’t know if they circle back to correct that but funny error esp. considering Marks brother was in DS.
That irony wasn't lost on me either. Quite a few parallels between the Fogerty brothers and the Knopfler brothers, especially in the roles they played in their respective bands and how their tenure ended.
Guy and Gary are experts at bringing out new stories and not rehashing old ground when interviewing these artists. Gary's impeccable research and Guy's humour are just a perfect combination and every single person they interview is always obviously at ease with them. Bravo all involved.
As a Geordie who had a group in the 60's (obviously minus the success/talent), I identify with Mark's early years. I went to Windows every Saturday and drooled over the Fender Strat. I played a Hofner Colorama through a radio at first, until we could afford a Selmer twin Years later, having moved to Boston, my wife bought me a Fender for Christmas, which I still have. Mark is the greatest ambassador for Newcastle, as is Hank Marvin in Perth..
A hard life does not lead to ageing well kiddies. MK looks great for his age. No so one of the interviewers who is, to his credit, rather. candid about insatiable drug use in his younger days in his very good very honest book. Great interview with, yes a handy guitar player, but a phenomenal songwriter. MK is one of the best song writers the UK ever produced
Gary remember working with you doing the paper rounds in Essex Road,Islington and you was at school (Dame Alice Owen) with my wife Gillian Dean, great chat gents 👏👏
A great listen. Thanks for doing it. Saw you Gary the other night on Sky arts songwriters program doing a stunning performance of barricades on your acoustic. Huge fan of Mark, seen him 3 times , twice on last straits tour. Saw Tony at Rewind North few weeks back singing great. Still hope to see Spandau one day, another real band of brilliance.
Mark the titanic of rock. So down to earth. Incredible. A true artist. Modest human being. No tatues no rings metals hanging on him. Yet a master of Gitar plays .. hmm
Mark Knopfler, a beautiful person, an exceptional person. In decades we will talk about it again. He is certainly the greatest pop rock guitarist of the 20th century. Exceptional author, composer and performer. “Brother in arms, Sultan of swing, Money for nothing”, there are so many exceptional things by Mark Knopfler!
Really interesting. Love Mark. I used to play the death out of Alchemy and bought the headband, wrist bands, play with my fingers! Still in music and enjoying life all with a little thanks to Mark!
Btw im also left handed but play guitar right handed, and I had the same experience as Guy. To me it just made more sense as a kid to use my left hand to make chords etc because to me that was the most complex part.
To me it would make most sense as well. But I guess the right hand writing with a pen and playing with a pick or not with the same hand makes sense to those who decided it should be this way. But I’m with you on the fact that the most complicated hand should be the one on the neck.
Omg when watched everly brothers sing why worry on old VHS it was Soo beautiful ❤️ so moving think most amazing thing ever heard in my life still think of it to this day .that whole show was cool .
My left handed brethren! That's great! When I was in 7th grade, I wanted to be in the orchestra at school. The band teacher had a silver Yamaha trombone..."Play this", he said. I told him I was left handed, and he astutely saw the dilemma...so, he took the trombone, loosened the frame to reverse the angle so that I could put it on my right shoulder and move the slide with my left hand. I was 1st chair all year long...I loved it, but never played again after that year. All that to say that as a lefty, I'm convinced we think different. My wife doesn't believe me, but I think being left handed and operating in a right handed world causes you to have to think differently, in an analytical way. As an architectural draftsman, I think my fascination with design and assemblies stems from my left handed thinking..."Is this correct? Can this be improved upon?" Sounds like I'm in great company!
Mark is a monster, no doubt. But looking at him speaking with Pratt (I don't know Kemp that much) gives me chills. One of the best (THE best ?) bassist to my hears.
I was at a recording session at British Grove studios in 2005. For some shit film I was on. But it was an amazing experience and the studio is totally gorgeous.
Oh man! This is great! Just a few minutes into it so I hope he talks about "Love Over Gold" but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the production of that record! The story goes that the sound of the piano part on "Private Investigations" was so good they kept playing it over and over to people; however, Mark noticed that they started losing something every time they played it since it was analog, and that's what inspired him and Neil Dorfsmann (sp?) to make "Brothers In Arms" all digital. I have the MoFi SACD of "Love Over Gold" and I can only imagine how good it sounded before it started to degrade. I'm building a vocal booth in my basement for a podcast I'm working on, and the book I'm referencing talks about The Power Station in pretty good detail. God bless Mark Knopfler and musicians like him who work hard to make people like me happy just to hear how good something sounds!
I’m a left hander who plays right handed, never knew Mark is in that club! It’s odd that I didn’t even think about playing left handed at the time, just picked up a right handed guitar and went for it. I’ve always wondered if I’d be a different player if I’d decided to play left handed.
Same here. I'm a lefty who feels more comfortable playing righty. Totally natural to me. Other lefties who play right handed are: Steve Cropper, Duane Allman, Joe Walsh, and Paul Simon. There are others but I forgot who.
@@tomcarl8021 We’re in good company! Are you like me and play racquet sports, snooker, darts etc right handed? The only thing I do left handed is write and paint. I’m also right footed.
@Tony-yp7ok I'm left handed in everything I do except for playing guitar. But, I'm also right footed. It prevented me from playing drums because I would play left handed like Phil Collins, but since I'm right footed, it's too awkward. Thankfully, I'm right handed playing guitar because I have more options to choose from and I can pick anyone's guitar up and play it. I feel bad for people who play lefty like McCartney and Hendrix because when they walk into a guitar store, they're lucky to have four guitars to choose from.
Such a good guitar player and songwriter. Just seems like a great guy too Thanks so much Gary and Guy for bringing us these. Cannot wait for DG’s interview!
Wonderful to hear Mark Knopfler as always but the mic situation was not very professional. The presenters kept moving sideways and backwards anywhere away from the mics. It's not that they haven't used them over the last 40 years. Definitely needed better positioning..
I used to run a tv shop and Philips arranged for us to sell cd's supplied by J.G.Windows in our showroom to support their latest technology. The Brothers in arms cd was used as a demo disc, and there was a marketing tie in with Dire Straits. Ah, the good old days.
@2:40 I'm a Geordie living in Sweden & I recorded in a Studio here & the producer bought an old Abbey road mixing desk, He was a total Beatles nut, but the Beatles never even used it. But it still has a cool "claim to fame" they mixed the Audio for Monty Pythons "Meaning of Life" film Audio on it
I bring my child to Mark Knopfler's world. Meantime and Single Handed Sailor. I think the Alchemy: Dire Straits Live 1984 was my introduction to Dire Straits. After 1984.
Chris Wright (although he now denies this in his autobiography) passed on Dire Straits. Even though quite a few of the Chrysalis staff tried to persuade him to sign the band.

The track Blind Willie McTell that Mark made with Dylan is unbelievable. Amazing.
Best songwriter comming out of UK.
An extraordinary and extraordinarily prolific songwriter. As talented with a pen as he is with a guitar.
He really is a raconteur/rockonteur. Can tell a story with the guitar too.

Not so sure about that. He looks bloated and marinated in alcohol like a pub rat. The look of that protruding belly is not very comforting.
